Parody is dead

A few months ago, The Daily Show was mocking the administration’s spin on the prison abuse scandal, calling the torture delivered by U.S. troops “freedom tickling.”

Of course, once again proving that parodying the Bush administration is virtually impossible, consider the names the Pentagon has come up with for camps that have replaced Abu Ghraib.

In response to the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib, the military has carried out dozens of changes, including streamlining the processing of prisoners to ease overcrowding and formalizing the interrogation of prisoners. The buildings containing the cell blocks where the abuses were committed have been turned over to Iraqi prison authorities; the Americans are keeping prisoners in two new camps with tents: Camp Liberty and Camp Redemption. (emphasis added)

I only wish I could make this stuff up.

I’m sure, of course, that Iraqi prisoners, subjected to all manner of “pressure,” will feel much better knowing they are being held in camps with such colorful and euphemistic names. Indeed, when they’re fed “freedom gruel” and being chased by a frothy-mouthed dog named “Liberation” during their stay at “Camp Liberty,” I’m sure they’ll be thankful for President Bush’s moral leadership.
