Joe just says no

All the talk has been that Joe Lieberman was a key candidate for a Bush administration slot, talk that Lieberman didn’t necessarily discourage. Now, however, it appears that there have been overtures from the White House, but Lieberman is staying where he is.

Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman has twice in recent days said “no” when approached about the possibility of a major job in the second Bush administration, CNN has learned.

The Cabinet vacancy at the Department of Homeland Security was the subject of the latest overture, according to congressional and other government sources. Those sources said the earlier overture was to see whether Lieberman might be interested in becoming the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Good for him. No matter how frustrated Dems get with Lieberman, this is definitely for the best. Had he left the Senate for a Bush administration post, Connecticut’s Republican governor, M. Jodi Rell, would have replaced Lieberman with a Republican, making an already difficult job for Senate Dems even tougher.

Still, what does it say about Lieberman that he was wooed for a post in the most conservative presidential administration in history?
