Given the context, readers know it was the latter, but the fact that it could have come from either shows we really haven’t progressed as far as we should have by now.
You see, Mr. Bauer, evolutionary biology doesn’t explain that humans descended from chimps, but rather that primates share a common ancestor that … oh, never mind. You wouldn’t understand anyway.
