My nominee for quote of the year

I was working on a year-in-review project and stumbled upon a quote I had forgotten about it. While far too many people said too many stupid things this year, I believe this quote, which the president offered in January, may be the most breathtaking thing anyone said in 2004.

“No President has ever done more for human rights than I have.”

At the time, it seemed pretty ridiculous. It wasn’t hard to think of a variety of other presidents who had advanced the cause of human rights with far greater success than Bush.

But that, of course, was before we learned of some compelling reasons to believe Bush may be the single worst president for human rights in American history.
