Antipathy down under

Bush brought back Karen Hughes to Washington to boost America’s image in the Middle East, but when she’s done there, maybe she could turn her attention towards some p.r. with countries that are supposed to like us. (Thanks to Phil for the tip)

Most Australians consider U.S. foreign policy to be as threatening as Islamic fundamentalism, according to a survey released Monday.

More than two-thirds of respondents, 68%, said Australia takes “too much notice” of the United States when setting its foreign policy agenda, and 57% judged U.S. foreign policy to be as much of a threat as Islamic fundamentalism.

The Lowy Institute for International Policy surveyed 1,000 randomly selected Australians on their foreign policy views. The survey’s margin of error was 3.1 percentage points.

The Sydney-based think-tank also found a majority of Australians ranked the United States near the bottom of their list of favored allies.

Asked to rate their “positive feelings” about a list of 15 key countries or regions, Australians put the United States at 11th place, ahead of only Indonesia, the Middle East, Iran and Iraq.

Remember, Australia is one of our closest allies in the world. And yet, the majority of Australians consider the United States to be as dangerous as Islamic fundamentalism?

Just out of curiosity, how many years do you suppose it will take for American diplomacy to undo the damage done during the Bush years?

I don’t know but I am staggered that this coterie of plutocrats have been allowed to hijack America, not once but twice. I’ve been reading stuff on Tom DeLay, the Bushes, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rummy and others too numerous to mention; and I’m amazed they haven’t been tarred, feathered and run out of town.

When Clinton first ran there was a huge deal made out of the fact he may have once inhaled marajuana. Yet you now have a two-term President with a documented cocaine posession bust, who admits he has smoked marajuana; and also a drink-driving bust. And he is being held up as a champion of moral values and feted by most of your mass-media as the great protector and defender of America in the face of terror.

He’s squandered the largest surplus in history in pursuit of a war to remove a regime that his Establishment installed and armed in the first place; in a place most Americans couldn’t find on a map. As well as implementing legislation to make the filthy rich even richer; whilst sawing at the ropes of the flimsy & already under-funded and ineffectual safety-net designed to aid the poorest.

Words fail me.
