Straight to the people

Harry Reid has taken some risks when it comes to the fight over the nuclear option, but he’s consistently been successful in a) making Bill Frist look bad; and b) getting his message out.

Tonight, however, Reid will take his communications strategy to a new level. Reid’s office just sent out an alert explaining that Reid will discuss the Dem position tonight in a nationally televised address.

On the eve of the historic vote in the United States Senate, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid will address the nation about the importance of the critical check in our democracy’s system of checks and balances – a Senator’s right to filibuster.

The majority of Americans agree that our Constitutional checks and balances must be preserved, and the independence of our judiciary must be protected. Senators Democrats have worked hard to reach out to their Republican colleagues and to look for compromise to protect the Senate from this abuse of power. With a little more than 24 hours until the historic vote, Senator Reid will discuss the real consequences of this historic vote to the strength of this country and to the daily lives of all Americans. The Alliance for Justice is sponsoring this important address to the nation.

I didn’t see this one coming. When was the last time a Senate Minority Leader delivered an address to the country like this?

It’s scheduled to be a 90-second speech broadcast on CNN at 8pm (Eastern), and on Fox News at 7:50pm (Eastern). Of course, the real advantage of this kind of ahead-of-the-curve tactic is that it’s likely to be aired repeatedly as part of the news cycle.

Frist may try and scramble to counter this, but he’ll be playing catch-up. I don’t know if Reid has the votes or not, but once again, he’s beating Frist at this game. Badly.

Update: I had the times of the broadcast wrong; this version is corrected.

He’ll make the early national news on the WestCoast, and the local shows at 10:00 Central and 11:00 Eastern.

Most important, he’ll be on all three network news shows first thing tomorrow AM.

Nice!!

No way Frist can get anything together until tomorrow.

  • Impressive.

I hope he lays out the same case Mark Kleiman does.

$10 says Frist announces a response to this by 5pm cst.

  • Bravo for Reid! Let’s hope this becomes another huge embarrasment for the Republicans, especially Frist. These people seem to have a tin ear when it comes to the mainstream American voter. I hope it remains so through the next election.

  • 90 seconds is perfect if you want your comments aired in their entirety during subsequent newscasts. When you’re out to deliver punchy take-home one-liners, which is what this is all about, 90 minutes is more than plenty. If he’s smart Reid will make declartions that challenge reporters to find out whether Frist really has supported judicial filibusters before, why so many of CLinton’s nominees got blocked and why the Democrats are using filibusters instead of staid procedurals like blue-slips. If it comes together the networks themselves will provide the supporting evidence that Frist won’t have time to lay out in detail.

  • Reid has been great. After the 2000 election my feeling was that congressional Democrats were more interested in keeping their jobs than in doing their jobs — Reid is helping me get over my bad feelings toward Democratic Washington insiders.

  • Reid has proven he can pull out ahead of the frist dogpack to get out on the soapbox and clarify the seriousness of this issue for Americans. He is using the media brilliantly, since the hardright slimeballs haven’t shut their big traps (critical thinking/reflection is anathma to them) for a nano second since bush was installed in the WH.

  • ref post #5, last sentence: scratch ‘Frist,’ replace with ‘Reid.’ If only I could really do that.

  • I thought I saw on AmericaBLOG that the CNN time was 8:00 pm Eastern. Can you verify?

Yes, 90 seconds IS a short amount of time, but the message gets out to hopefully most of America. One of the principal reasons that Repugs beat us up so successfully is that the Dem message is not given fair play in the media. Just like Tom DeLay started running scared once he got name recognition, this should help the Dems level the playing field at least a little.

  • Ninety seconds is exactly the right amount of time. Any less time, and he’d just be sloganeering, any more time, and the United States of ADD would zone out.
