When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging

Some people just don’t know when to quit. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) raised more than a few eyebrows a couple of weeks ago when he publicly suggested bombing Mecca in the event of a terrorist nuclear strike in the U.S.

Talk show host Pat Campbell asked the Littleton Republican how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons.

“Well, what if you said something like – if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites,” Tancredo answered.

When the host asked if he was talking about destroying Mecca, Tancredo said, “Yeah.”

This week, Tancredo went on Fox News to set the record straight.

“I didn’t say nuke anything. I just said ‘take out their holy sites.'”

Yeah, that’s much better. When Al Jazeera viewers hear that a member of Congress, with presidential aspirations, from the president’s own political party, is talking openly “taking out” the most sacred of Islamic holy sites, I’m sure they’ll take comfort in knowing that he wasn’t specifically referring to nuclear bombs.

pshycho dumn asses!!

  • Wouldn’t it be funny if reporters were to ask the Prez (or anyone else in the GOP) if he/they stand by Tancredo’s remarks? If “yes,” then the arab world goes totally ape. If “no” then Tancredo really looks like an isolated nut out of touch with his own party. If they waffle, then the GOP looks like a squirming loser.

Of course, the Democrats would never press their advantage.

  • We should be constantly looking for more of the kinds of divisions implied in Mr. Flibble’s suggestion. Questions for the Prez or anyone else in which “yes” or “no” or even “no comment” constitute a win for us. There are so many crackpots in the GOP — falwell, dobson, robertson, bush, cheney, rumsfeld, tancredo, coulter, all of faux news …. who could ask for anything more?

  • Mr. Fibble nails it, but just a little off-center. We have heard almost no outrage over Tancredo’s remarks, and he has repeated them over and over again, on both audio- and videotape. Why have we heard almost no outrage? Because in part of what Mr. Fibble said, the Dems didn’t kvetch enough about it.

More importantly, though, the CCCP (Compliant Complicit Corporate Press) applied its usual double standard: ONE STANDARD for Dean, Clinton, Kerry, and every other liberal (with the unfortunately typical result of Dems bashing fellow Dems in public); and a DIFFERENT STANDARD for the Rethugs, where outrageous things are said and done and almost no one in the CCCP bats an eye or feels compelled to ask Mr. Fibble’s question of others in the Rethug Party.

And of course we are so surprised that the CCCP stays asleep while our democracy and our planet goes down the shithole. It is shocking …i.e., shockingly pathetic.

  • There’s a very important Muslim “holy siteâ€? right in the middle of Jerusalem . . . it does make you wonder what the consequences would be if Tom Tancredo got his wish.
Why do be tolerate these cretins? He really does epitomise “you can lead a whore to culture but you can’t make her think.
