Now Coburn wants less polarization

The opening day of John Roberts’ confirmation hearings were not only dull, they were predictable. Committee members’ opening statements lasted for over three hours, Roberts spoke for about seven minutes, and they were done for the day. Must-see-TV this wasn’t.

There was, however, one moment that stood out. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), perhaps the most conservative senator in the chamber, was reading from a prepared statement and literally choked back tears while reading this paragraph:

“When I ponder our country and its greatness, its weaknesses, and its potential, my heart aches for less divisiveness, less polarization, less finger pointing, less bitterness and less mindless partisanship, which, at times, sounds almost hateful to the ears of ordinary Americans.”

It seemed quite sincere. Coburn’s colleagues seemed stunned. Committee staffers seemed anxious to do something, but didn’t know what. It was the opening day, no one had even said anything controversial or confrontational, and Coburn is already in tears. This is a guy, viewers thought, who takes this stuff seriously.

Or does he? Shortly before Coburn got all choked up, he was seen doing a crossword puzzle.

Moreover, it’s hard to take Coburn’s call for civility too seriously in light of his record. His heart may ache for less divisiveness, polarization, and bitterness now, but less than a year ago, Coburn characterized the race against his Democratic opponent as a battle between “good and evil“; he called lawmakers in his state capital “a bunch of crapheads“; and told an audience that he believes gays have “infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country” and represent “the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today.”

Coburn’s right that political attacks can sound “almost hateful” to the ears of ordinary Americans. Too bad he doesn’t realize how much he’s contributed to this problem.

After the tears
And the fears
Was a crossword clue
That read:
“Monica’s Dress Color.”

That made the smug pug
Happy again.

Accountability for Clinton
Was the uncovering at all costs
Of what two people did in private.

Accountability for the thugs…
Is crocodile tears
And the gnashing of incisors,
And the wailing of:
“The blame game… the blame game.”

That’s because they are guilty
Of letting the poor drown….
And everybody
Including themselves
Knows it.

  • And in the words of arch conservative Grover Norquist “I think that politics should be bitter and nasty” and “partisanship is like date rape”.

Does anyone know if Coburn appears at Norquist’s Wednesday morning Leave us alone get togethers?

  • Very amusing, koreyal, and dead-on.

These bastards are finally scared shitless that the American people will see them and their agenda for what they really are: a shift to an American Taliban control of our personal lives, and the rape of the Treasury for the elite (or, as Bush so inelegantly stated at a fundraiser: the haves and the have-mores). How hypocritical of Coburn to cry the crocodile tears while working on a crossword puzzle — I’m sure he was gathering more “cross” words to use on his political opponents! — and then lament that he has to go back home to keep practicing medicine: A DIRECT VIOLATION OF THE SENATE’S CONFLICT OF INTEREST RULES!!!!! Fucking hypocrites.

IF our pathetic CCCP (Compliant Complicit Corporate Press) stays awake and stops giving these bastards a free pass to destroy American decency and democracy, then maybe we will save our country. I’ve noted before that I have no faith and little hope that this will happen.

One sign to look for is if the CCCP stops giving anonymous cover to the Rethugs who lie to them, or even just feed them incomplete or inaccurate or purely partisan horseshit. Unless and until that happens, until they blow the cover on the liars and instead out them by name and rank and serial number, then there is no hope for the WaPo and all the rest of the CCCP.

  • Several times a year I have to interface with some of the PR functions of the graduate school where I work.

At one of these functions – a large dinner – a student got up and made a very moving little speech on how important the faculty had become to him – how the personal bond had developed, etc. etc. – as he spoke, he got quite emotional, eventually choking up a bit, fighting back tears. I was gobsmacked.

Six months later, I was out at a similar event, the same guy got up and did an almost verbatim performance – it was chilling…thekeez

  • I second Analytical Liberal’s point about the CCCP (read “Washington Post et al”) regurgitating BushCo talking points, in general, and specifically trying to put the blame Gov. Blanco. The press has to start to do its job again.

  • Shorter Coburn:

Waaah waaaah waaaah! We fucked everything up and now we might lose our senate seats in 2006. Waaah waaah waaaah!

  • Pardon my ignorance, but how does a state where Dems outnumber Repubs 2 to 1 elect douchebags like Coburn and Inhofe to the Senate?

I know there are a lot of states down my way that have 2 Repub senators despite Dem majorities. My state’s one of them–but even though Liddy Dole and Richard Burr are pretty dense, NO ONE can beat Inhofe and Coburn for stupidity in the Senate.
