White House not distancing itself from DeLay — yet

At least for the time being, the White House is (publicly) standing behind Tom DeLay, indictment and all.

At the White House, press secretary Scott McClellan said the president still considers DeLay “a good ally, a leader who we have worked closely with to get things done for the American people.”

“I think the president’s view is that we need to let the legal process work,” McClellan said.

Maybe. If DeLay’s indictment becomes a political embarrassment and/or distraction for the White House, Bush may find it necessary to throw the guy overboard. Remember, the Bush gang didn’t go for Trent Lott’s jugular at first either, but when the drumbeat became annoying, the president made it clear Lott’s leadership services would no longer be needed.

Could it happen again? Definitely.

Not to mention that anyone who follows DeLay’s career knows he’s a rotten egg.

Regardless of how this pans out, what are the chances he won’t be re-elected next? His poll numbers were already sagging locally, it’s quite likely that his constitutents won’t don’t like the appearence of inpropriety or the embarassment regardless of whether or not DeLay is convicted.

Throw the Bums Out in 2006!
