When the going gets tough…

The Associated Press, today:

In the face of such grim news, Bush is likely to follow the examples of Clinton and other embattled presidents and make a public display of his work ethic.

“The American people expect me to do my job, and I’m going to,” Bush said, shrugging off the “background noise” of the CIA leak investigation.

The New York Times, today:

Administration officials said that the White House would seek to keep as low a profile as possible if indictments were issued; Scott McClellan, the White House press secretary, did not schedule a briefing for Friday, and Mr. Bush plans to leave in the afternoon for a weekend at Camp David.

A public display of Bush’s “work ethic”? I guess we should be glad he’s not off to clear brush for another month.

But, they always lie – so expect a prolonged scrub-cutting expedition (thank goodness, he can do less damage there than almost anywhere else).

BTW, in my home country, brush-clearance is what’s allocated as diversionary punishment for relatively trivial crimes, which seems grimly appropriate.

  • Looks like Bush’s ‘work ethic’ includes another speech on the war on terror. It only took him five minutes to lie…. he cited a letter from Al Q’s no. 2 that the own terrorist org has said it a fake. Using fake letters as a justification to ‘stay the course’ isn’t a good idea.

  • Clinton had approval ratings in the high 50s and 60s during the entire Year of Monica. That made his ability to “focus on work” etc. very plausible. Much of the public, while disapproving of Clinton, did seem to feel that the impeachment was a partisan distraction etc. Bush’s low ratings will impede him from making the same claim with the same credibility.

You dug the spider hole, George. Now go lie in it.

  • Considering how much time he spends outside of Washngton, the chances of him being in the WH at this time are small.
