Bush chooses a side

Shortly after Dick Cheney accused Democrats of making “dishonest and reprehensible” attacks, the issue came up during a presidential press conference in Korea.

Q: Mr. President, Vice President Cheney called it reprehensible for critics to question how you took the country to war, but Senator Hagel says it’s patriotic to ask those kinds of questions. Who do you think is right?

Bush: The Vice President.

(Apparently, the exchange was more interesting in video. The Washington Post reported, “Bush’s face tightened and he answered sharply, ‘The vice president.'”)

Pressed to explain why, Bush said “Democrats…looked at the same intelligence I did, and they voted — many of them voted to support the decision I made.” The president is apparently under the impression that if he repeats a falsehood often enough, people might forget that he’s not telling the truth.

Nevertheless, it was a great question for Bush. Chuck Hagel said that “the Bush administration must understand that each American has a right to question our policies in Iraq and should not be demonized for disagreeing with them.” Dick Cheney said those questioning the administration’s policies are undermining American troops.

Bush made it pretty clear last week which side of this divide he was on, but this was a helpful confirmation before an international audience that the president has little tolerance for dissent. Let the demonizing begin continue.

I saw a voice of the people section of the NY Daily News today — a person in the Bronx siding with the president. He wrote:

“Calling our President a liar does a great disservice to our troops, our civilians and our entire effort in the Middle East. It also gives hope to our enemies in that if we show division here, they just have to hold out until we retreat.”

I took it upon myself to respond — perhaps the Daily News will post it. My response was:

“To Voicer John McCarthy: President Bush and VP Cheney’s continued attempts to guilt the American Public with their “If you’re not with us, you’re
against our troops” rhetoric is the true disservice. The fact is simple, John — it’s not our brave soldiers who are losing our support, it’s our leaders.”

But the disservice began long ago, truth be told, when our politicians were duped into voting in favor of this fiasco.

The fact is, if you tell me the sky is pink, you can’t get mad at me when I come back and tell you I’ve discovered its actually blue. You don’t get to say “But you agreed with me before. It’s wrong that you’ve changed your mind.”

Unless you’re our President of course.

  • Great piece over at Knight Ridder – while they don’t use the word “liar” – “tinkers with truth” is good for a headline.

  • When pressed to explain why he prefers Cheney’s never-upset-dear-leader answer over Chuck Hagel, Bush went on automated pilot to talk about Democrats getting the same intelligence as he did. Last I checked, Hagel was a REPUBLICAN, one who actually went to Vietnam instead of Alabama, who is also questioning the wisdom of this war. The follow-up from the press should have been to remind Bush that the question wasn’t about the Democrats but about a comment from a member of his own party. Bush can no longer be allowed to get away with stock answers to difficult questions.

  • Doesn’t it just drip irony that an administration that is, allegedly, trying to foster freedom and democracy around the globe can’t seem to tolerate the ultimate, defining characteristic of our own democracy: the right of the people to dissent from the government’s viewpoint without fear of retribution.

And these people are expected to foster democracy around the world? What an utter joke!! They’re nothing but a disgrace and an embarassment! To hell with them!
