Just to give you an update on a post from late last week, John Edwards officially announced yesterday that he will not run for re-election to his Senate seat in North Carolina.
In a letter to the state party, Edwards said that his White House run is “going exceedingly well” and said that he will “devote all of my energy to running for president.” To hear him tell it, this decision was a no-brainer. “The decision to move forward decisively to seek the nomination was not a difficult one,” Edwards said.
With all due respect to the senator, I doubt it was this easy. Edwards’ campaign is moving right along, but it’s not going “exceedingly well,” at least as far as his poll numbers in Iowa, New Hampshire, and nationwide are concerned. The smarter move would probably be to drop out of the presidential race and win a second term in the Senate. Instead, Edwards is gambling.
He’ll formally kickoff his campaign a week from tomorrow.
