Tom DeLay is facing multiple charges in Texas, possible charges stemming from the Abramoff scandal, on top of the five separate controversies (so far) that have led to admonishments from the House Ethics Committee. Facing a difficult future, DeLay has reached within, done some soul searching, and now believes he recognizes the real problem behind his unethical and illegal conduct: a massive Democratic conspiracy.
DeLay: And because of [the rule barring leaders from being under indictment], the Democrats used this runaway District Attorney here in Austin, Texas, to abuse that rule. Eight grand juries indicted me, and the only reason to indict me is to get me to step aside. (BREAK)
Fox News anchor: You said just a moment ago you suspect that this was the real reason you were indicted because the Democrats wanted you out of the role of Majority Leader.
DeLay: It’s the only reason, Brian.
One could point out that his charges in Texas are just a tiny part of DeLay’s broader problems, and one might be tempted to note that the runaway prosecutor offered DeLay a plea bargain deal that would have let him keep his leadership post, but what’s the point? DeLay has operated a corrupt machine for years, he’s been caught, and now he’s beginning to face the consequences. In response, DeLay insists he’s the victim. It’s just sad.
Update: Apparently, the conspiracy includes the notoriously-conservative Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which rejected a DeLay appeal today.
The state’s highest criminal court on Monday denied Rep. Tom DeLay’s request that the money laundering charges against him be dismissed or sent back to a lower court for an immediate trial.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals denied the requests with no written order two days after he announced he was stepping down as House majority leader. DeLay had been forced to temporarily relinquish the Republican leadership post after he was indicted on money laundering and conspiracy charges in September.
