The vast left-wing conspiracy strikes again

Tom DeLay is facing multiple charges in Texas, possible charges stemming from the Abramoff scandal, on top of the five separate controversies (so far) that have led to admonishments from the House Ethics Committee. Facing a difficult future, DeLay has reached within, done some soul searching, and now believes he recognizes the real problem behind his unethical and illegal conduct: a massive Democratic conspiracy.

DeLay: And because of [the rule barring leaders from being under indictment], the Democrats used this runaway District Attorney here in Austin, Texas, to abuse that rule. Eight grand juries indicted me, and the only reason to indict me is to get me to step aside. (BREAK)

Fox News anchor: You said just a moment ago you suspect that this was the real reason you were indicted because the Democrats wanted you out of the role of Majority Leader.

DeLay: It’s the only reason, Brian.

One could point out that his charges in Texas are just a tiny part of DeLay’s broader problems, and one might be tempted to note that the runaway prosecutor offered DeLay a plea bargain deal that would have let him keep his leadership post, but what’s the point? DeLay has operated a corrupt machine for years, he’s been caught, and now he’s beginning to face the consequences. In response, DeLay insists he’s the victim. It’s just sad.

Update: Apparently, the conspiracy includes the notoriously-conservative Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which rejected a DeLay appeal today.

The state’s highest criminal court on Monday denied Rep. Tom DeLay’s request that the money laundering charges against him be dismissed or sent back to a lower court for an immediate trial.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals denied the requests with no written order two days after he announced he was stepping down as House majority leader. DeLay had been forced to temporarily relinquish the Republican leadership post after he was indicted on money laundering and conspiracy charges in September.

Definitely a case of someone basing their assumptions of someone elses’ actions based on their own. Just because this is something that Republicans can do doesn’t means the Democrats would – even if they had the ability (which they don’t).

  • The bad part about this is, when the day is done, and all the plea agreements have been reached, ole tommy-boy will never have to work another day in his life.

It seems as though everyday I read another story about his wife sitting on a board of directors that is a front company for some Abramoff scam and getting a huge compensation.

I don’t generally wish ill will upon people, but I hope that she divorces him so that he won’t have access to any of the ill gotten gains.

  • Watching Delay sink is like watching the Titanic go down in super slow motion. The noise machine plays on and on…

    That’s the bad news.

The good news is his ankles are now wet and his smirk is gone.

  • what’s really impressive about the dems is the way they got republicans to oppose tom delay’s return as majority leader! that mind control is something else! would that they could apply it on actual legislation, but dems only seem able to manipulate republicans on procedural issues!

(or something: god, it’s exhausting to try and think like a right-wing zealot)

  • Well, his logic is sound, based on his mental foundation, I mean that he believed that he WAS the Federal government. And it would take a massive conspiracy to take down the government, right?

Or maybe he’s just a sociopathic prick. That would eliminate his ability to see that his actions were wrong.

  • Eight grand juries? Damn, I wish we had a conspiracy of that scope. I especially love how after citing that he says the ONLY reason is political. If you want to delegitimize the grand juries’ indictments, I would think you WOULDN’T want to emphasize the large number of them.

  • Thanks, slip kid no more.

Interesting how the news media keep repeating the DeLay mantra that Ronnie Earle is after the Bug Man because Earle “is a Democrat.” The CHRONICLE article even notes that “Although Earle is a Democrat,” DeLay is also “touched” by the “unrelated” Abramoff scandal, which is being investigated by “a Republican administration.” The thrust of the reporter’s point seems to be that indictments and grand jury investigations are all politically motivated…which is exactly what DeLay’s noise machine wants people to believe.
