Abramoff’s last friend

Most Republicans in DC seem to have the strategic wherewithal to get as far away from Jack Abramoff as humanly possible. Most of those who’ve taken his money have gotten rid of it. Those who knew him personally are denouncing him forcefully. But Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) seems to be the only person in the country taking a contrarian approach to the massive lobbying scandal.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., came to the defense of disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff on Monday, saying he’s a good person who’s been unjustly criticized.

“They’re portraying Jack as a monster. I see him more as a good person who’s done bad things and has to be punished for doing bad things,” Rohrabacher, a longtime friend of Abramoff, said in a phone interview.

“I think that he obviously has done some things that are wrong and illegal and he’s going to have to pay the price for it,” Rohrabacher said. “I think that a lot of other things that have been characterized as corruption on the part of Abramoff are actually standard operating procedures for lobbying in Washington, D.C. arranging trips and things like that. So I think that he’s received a lot of unjust criticism.”

This strikes me as breathtakingly dumb. Has Rohrabacher even followed the Abramoff case? Phrases like “good person” don’t belong in the same sentence as Jack Abramoff unless the speaker prefaces it with “he’s obviously not a.” We’re talking about a guy who just pled guilty to felony counts of fraud, public corruption, and tax evasion as part of a deal that included many other charges. Abramoff is a disgraced sleaze; the only person who doesn’t seem aware of that is Rohrabacher.

For that matter, as far as public relations pitches go, for a sitting Republican House member to describe Abramoff’s corrupt deals as “standard operating procedures” on Capitol Hill actually makes the Dems’ arguments for them. Indeed, Rohrabacher has been doing this a lot lately — over the weekend, he told the WaPo that Abramoff-like deals have “happened every day in Washington.”

Rohrabacher seems oblivious to the fact that it makes the scandal worse. Far be it for me to help congressional Republicans spin the biggest corruption scandal on the Hill in decades, but shouldn’t they argue that Abramoff was a treacherous aberration, not the kind of corruption that’s become commonplace under GOP leadership?

You know I said the same thing about Satan, you know that whole apple in the Garden of Eden thing well thats standard operating procedure for orignal sin, so people should just relax. How clueless can you get and still be voted into office? DING DING DING we have our answer.

  • … for a sitting Republican House member to describe Abramoff’s corrupt deals as “standard operating procedures” on Capitol Hill actually makes the Dems’ arguments for them.

Oh the Dems have an argument?
There seems a leadership vacuum all around on this.

I don’t see any high ranking Dems stepping into to the fore and banging a desk crying REFORM!

Could it be that’s because it is standard operating procedure?

This country is fucked because we have two political parties that are both wholly owned by corporations. One party just loves rich people a bit more. And the other party just cares about poor people a tad more.

Other than that… by and by… they are Tweedlerude and Tweedledumb. Or if you will: Liars and Liebermen.

  • I story I read today while cruising the Web noted that Rohrabacher and Abramoff have been buddies since their “College Republicans” days.

We’re all guilty of sentimentality when it comes to college remembrances and friends, so I see no harm in the congressman’s attempts to downplay Abramoff’s many crimes. It’s the least he can do for an old buddy, even though it aint gonna do squat.

  • Rohrabacher must not have gotten the memo that DeLay isn’t coming back and was just trying to curry favor with The Hammer by saying nice things about his “good friend” Jack.

And what the heck is Mr. R’s staff doing, sitting on their hands while he puts them all out of a job with his big mouth? You’d think they’d have given him an emergency update on the state of things after his first little chat with the WaPo.

Unless they did and he went ahead and said those things anyway, which would be even worse for them.

    Pass the popcorn…..

  • “fraud, public corruption, and tax evasion”? Why is Dana Rohrabacher still sticking by Jack and saying that these kinds activities are standard in Washington? Because that’s Dana Rohrabacker TOO!!!! Birds of a feather do indeed shit together.

How would you like to bet that Dana and Jack are connected at the hip and the real reason that Dana is sticking by Jack is because he’s scared shitless that Jack is going to flip on him? If Jack flips on Dana then Dana is going to be wearing stipes too.

  • The thing that makes Jack Abramoff seem like a bad person, rather then just an opportunitistic crook, is the way he talked about his native American clients. Anyone who takes your money, promotes your causes, should not be dissing you in emails to his friends.

But for JackA, being paid by both sides of a casino licensing deal was just fine and dandy by him.

    Scum! True and utter Scum!
