Pelosi asks for investigation into alleged prostitution

Leading the way on the list of “things that will never happen,” Nancy [tag]Pelosi[/tag] suggested yesterday that House Speaker Dennis [tag]Hastert[/tag] help launch an ethics committee [tag]investigation[/tag] into whether two defense contractors supplied Duke Cunningham and other lawmakers with [tag]prostitutes[/tag].

Citing media reports, Pelosi wrote to Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) to urge the House’s top Republican to join her in introducing a bipartisan resolution that directs the ethics panel to look into the allegations, notwithstanding an ongoing criminal probe by the Justice Department into Cunningham’s activities. Traditionally, the ethics committee has avoided becoming involved in any matter in which DOJ has already begun a criminal investigation.

“Mr. Speaker, these disclosures, along with other indictments and allegations of unethical behavior, demand strong action by congressional leaders to uphold the integrity of the House,” Pelosi wrote in her letter to Hastert. “Since these new charges uniquely affect the House of Representatives, I believe that, regardless of what action may be taken in the [Justice Department] criminal investigation, the House must act.”

Pelosi recommended that she and Hastert bring a “bipartisan resolution” to the floor, which would direct the House [tag]Ethics Committee[/tag] to launch an investigation.

Hastert’s office is not fond of the idea, saying that Ethics Committee should not receive orders from the leadership on which controversies spark formal inquiries.

That said, it’s kind of amusing to see Pelosi exploit the latest GOP flap. Republicans have been trying to shake the “culture of corruption” line for a while, but possible [tag]prostitution[/tag] adds a whole new level of embarrassment for the party.

Maybe the Democrats should arrange a weekly press event where they go down the list of investigations that have been called for that still aren’t happening, and distribute press kits about what we know on each one. The point being that not only is the corruption instititutionalized, so is the covering-up.

Maybe we could kick it off with Casey Kasem doing a “DC’s Top 40” – “New on the countdown this week with a bullet, Duke Cunningham and prostitutes!”

  • Pelosi needs to bring this up on a daily basis—in front of the cameras and microphones. Hastert and Company will then have a choice, given that the midterms are only a little more than six months away.

Six months. Twenty-seven weeks. One-hundred-eighty-nine days. The Republikanners are coming up quick on the choice of “political death with a simple modicum of dignity”—or just plain old “political death.” They can go down in the light of day—or go down in their bunkers.

They’ll not be able to depend on the die-hard Reich faithful; even a hypocrite won’t willingly climb into bed with a herd of skunks. (Remember all those Germans who, when the Allied troops marched in, suddenly had no memory of their Party affiliation?) They’ll not be able to count on the moderate wing of America, the ones who, whether GOP or Dem, would have supported someone like the great “Arizona Flip-Flopper;” who’ll even reject their god-like John McCain in the end. (Republicans and Democrats do have some things in common, including an extreme disdain for having the wool pulled over their eyes by their leaders.)

  • The Republican Congress has no integrity to uphold. They sold it off about 3 years ago.
Steve, I grew up in Germany. Every German fought the Russians. I don’t know who fought us.

  • I would think Hastert would be eager to investigate–although his investigation might take a slightly different skew: he’ll probably want to know the extent to which the prostitutes hired by lobbyists to provide sexual favors compete with the Republican congessional prostitutes who provide legislative favors. There is admittedly a difference; in the first instance it’s the Congressmen who are getting screwed; in the second it’s the rest of us

  • I think we should investigate the extent to which the pro-life Republican Congress- “Johns” have used condoms to prevent the conception of sacred life.

  • I dunno. I don’t think there’s really a conflict here. After all, what’s the difference between a congressman and a prostitute? They both screw you for money…
