Wednesday’s political round-up

Today’s installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn’t generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* California Gov. [tag]Arnold Schwarzenegger[/tag]’s comeback drive is apparently falling a little short. A new Rasmussen poll shows the actor-turned-politician losing his modest leads over both of his Dem rivals. Schwarzenegger now trials state Controller [tag]Steve Westly[/tag], 46% to 44%, and is tied with state Treasurer [tag]Phil Angelides[/tag] at 45% each.

* Florida’s gubernatorial race is looking more and more competitive all the time. A new Quinnipiac poll shows Rep. [tag]Jim Davis[/tag] (D) pulling ahead of state Attorney General [tag]Charlie Crist[/tag], and ahead of state Chief Financial Officer [tag]Tom Gallagher[/tag], each by a 40% to 37% margin. Davis also leads his Dem primary opponent, state Sen. [tag]Rod Smith[/tag], 38% to 17%, while Crist leads Gallagher, 43% to 26%. In general election match-ups, Smith trails both GOP candidates.

* In Colorado, GOP gubernatorial candidate [tag]Marc Holtzman[/tag] failed to qualify for the party’s primary ballot at the state’s Republican convention, but he vowed to fight on and qualify for the ballot via ballot signatures. After Rep. [tag]Bob Beauprez[/tag] easily received party support, the state GOP after the party chairman called on Holtzman to quit, prompting Holtzman to say, “I will not allow a small group of 3,000 insiders and benefits of patronage of the system to stand in the way.” He has to deliver 10,500 signatures by Thursday to qualify. The primary is Aug. 8.

* In Idaho’s primaries yesterday, Rep. [tag]Butch Otter[/tag] (R) and newspaper owner [tag]Jerry Brady[/tag] (D) easily won their party’s gubernatorial primaries and will face off in November. In the six-way GOP House primary, state Rep. [tag]Bill Sali[/tag] edged out the crowd and will face [tag]Larry Grant[/tag], a retired general counsel for Micron, in the general election.

* Sen. [tag]John Ensign[/tag]’s (R-Nev.) lead over [tag]Jack Carter[/tag] (D) in Nevada’s Senate race is narrowing a bit, but is still huge. A new Reno Gazette Journal/KRNV-TV poll shows Ensign up, 52% to 32%. The 20-point margin is considerably less than the 33-point margin Ensign enjoyed over Carter six weeks ago.

* In Massachusetts, [tag]Deval Patrick[/tag]’s gubernatorial campaign got a boost yesterday with a high-profile endorsement from Rep. [tag]Barney Frank[/tag] (D-Mass.). The Boston Globe also has a nice profile piece on Patrick today.

* And SurveyUSA has published the latest in its 50-state series today, this time showing the support each senator enjoys in her or her home state. Incumbents didn’t do as well as last time and there are now 25 senators who have dropped below 50% support. The biggest loser: Pennsylvania’s [tag]Rick Santorum[/tag], who finished dead last with 36% support.

Angelides is promising to make his contributors, big oil pay everyone and not just him according to Arnold’s gang. Maybe not. He just says there’s 17 bil of uncollected taxes. The treasurer should know if anyone does. You don’t suppose he’s planning to tax church property?

Did you know that only the government and the church actually own real estate? It so! All other so called home owners are taxed. Don’t pay the tax and get evicted. Real estate taxes are rents paid to the government. By not having to pay taxes on church property the church is the equal of the state. This also has the effect of tithing, taxes paid to God by everyone. There’s a light at the end of that church equal to or greater than the state tunnel. California is where the first blow to end state forced tithing will come no doubt. Angelides?

The hoax is busted.

  • What I find encouraging in the SurveyUSA results is that of the 12 Senators with negative net approval, 10 of them are repubs. I know that won’t necessarily translate into anything tangible this Nov. But, as a reading of the public’s mood, it’s a good sign.

  • typo in 3rd bullet point (Colorado) “He to deliver 10,500 signatures by Thursday to qualify.” He HAS TO deliver… maybe?

  • And SurveyUSA has published the latest in its 50-state series today,

Can someone confirm that the State color is indicative of how that state voted in the 2004 presidential election? It seems that way to me, but I’m not sure. thanks in advance!

  • Isn’t there a constitutional amendment in idaho that prohibits butch otters?

  • Can someone confirm that the State color is indicative of how that state voted in the 2004 presidential election?

    Yep. That’s it exactly, Edo.

  • “Tax’em all and let God sort them out!”

Just take away all their tax exemptions and deductions and add them and their properties to the tax rolls with the retail level fortune tellers. This will pass Constitutional muster. Plus it’s non-discriminatory and ‘equal’. Levy the Buddhist priests, Scientologists, Animists, Voodoo doctors and Hindu shamans right along with the Rabbis and Judaeolators. And also the secular ‘non-profit’ 501c3s, such as the ones that fund MALDEF and the rest.
