‘Left Behind,’ the video game

Conservatives have complained for years about violence in [tag]video games[/tag], but apparently their concerns were limited to certain kinds of violence. When the video game is “[tag]Left Behind[/tag]: Eternal Forces,” and the violence is directed towards heathens, apparently the right isn’t as concerned (via C&L).

Imagine: you are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a [tag]Christian [/tag][tag]theocracy[/tag], and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission – both a religious mission and a military mission — to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state – especially moderate, mainstream Christians. Your mission is “to conduct physical and spiritual [tag]warfare[/tag]”; all who resist must be taken out with extreme prejudice. […]

This game immerses children in present-day New York City — 500 square blocks, stretching from Wall Street to Chinatown, Greenwich Village, the United Nations headquarters, and Harlem. The game rewards children for how effectively they role play the killing of those who resist becoming a born again Christian. […]

Is this paramilitary mission simulator for children anything other than prejudice and bigotry using religion as an organizing tool to get people in a violent frame of mind? The dialogue includes people saying, “[tag]Praise the Lord[/tag],” as they blow [tag]infidels [/tag]away.

A few years ago, The Simpsons had an episode in which Rod and Todd Flanders got to play the one video game Ned would approve of: “Billy Graham’s Bible Blaster.” Rod said, during the game play, “Keep firing! Convert the [tag]heathens[/tag]!” When a heathen got hit a gun that shot bibles, the “victim” was immediately turned into a well-dressed man with a halo. (Those who were merely winged were turned into Unitarians.)

As is often the case lately, parodying the far-right is surprisingly difficult, and in this case, not nearly over-the-top enough.

For what it’s worth, the point of a game like “Left Behind: Eternal Forces” is not subtle.

Games “will be a new tool to get the two-minute generation to think about matters of eternal importance in a way that isn’t religious,” said Troy A. Lyndon, one of the “Left Behind” game’s creators. […]

” ‘Left Behind’ has the Antichrist, the end of the world, the apocalypse,” said co-creator Jeffrey S. Frichner. “It’s got all the Christian stuff, and it’s still got all the cool stuff.”

That’s why industry watchers predict that titles like “Eternal Forces” will find a broader audience in the same way Christian houses of worship like Pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in Lake Forest have attracted followers — in part by not being overly doctrinaire.

“The reason that I think this game has a chance is that it’s not particularly preachy,” said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities. “I will say some of the dialogue is pretty lame — people saying, ‘Praise the Lord’ after they blow away the bad guys. I think they’re overdoing it a bit. But the message is OK.”

The game is based on the best-selling series of “Left Behind” books, which offer an account of the end times as predicted in the biblical book of Revelation. One of the series’ authors, [tag]Tim LaHaye[/tag], said the game had the potential to communicate ideas such as salvation to people who might not think of themselves as particularly interested.

“We hope teenagers like the game,” LaHaye said. “Our real goal is to have no one left behind.”

We’ve been warned.

On the plus side you can lead the forces of the Anti-Christ… so aptly named “Global Community Peacekeepers”… I’m not joking!!!

(I think I’ll play the game just so I can kill some born-again Christians… at last, a game for the leftwing!!!)

  • When I read about this yesterday, I thought it was satire. Now I’m kicking myself that I didn’t think of creating the game first. Its so counter-intuitive that it will sell millions.

I look forward to hearing the wholesale condemnation of this game by the Catholic Church and all the other Christian churches that actually follow the word of christ. … …. okay, I won’t hold my breath …

  • Please tell me why the concept of life after death is not one of if not the most destructive idea ever dreamed up and promulgated in the minds of men?

  • Evangelical Christianity = shooting at people who disagree with you. I couldn’t agree more. I only have a couple questions; Is G.W. Bush in the game? What will the game be rated? How long after the release of the game will Pat Robertson proclaim that he “beat the game” by using hidden cheat codes given to him directly by God?

  • It just proves my theory that if these are the “end times” and there is an actual anti-christ, and there is a beast and a false prophet, we might start looking at these right wing whacko churches and the monsters who make a profit on simple people, to find out who they are.

  • Yet one more link between radical “christians” and radical “muslims”.

Saying “Praise the Lord” or “Praise be to Allah” as one blows away one’s “enemy”?

Instead of giving these people a video game, let’s send them over to actually fight al Qaida, the Taliban, etc. and let the rest of us live in peace as God, Allah, the Creator meant us to.

    Do I hear an “Amen”?

  • MNProgressive: not all “evangelical Christians” are into shooting at their enemies (ie Jimmy Carter, Jim Wallis are but two examples). In fact, we shouldn’t even refer to those that are promoting this game to be “Christians”.

  • Where’s the outrage over these red state elitists re-defining New York City as Manhattan? I happen to know lots of heathens in Park Slope, Williamsburg, Astoria, and SoBro that need to be killed in order to be saved. Bloomberg needs to stand up to this crap. Unfortunately for him, he’s a Jew, so they’ll kill him first.

  • To be honest with you I had this idea about 10 years ago.

    But my vision was bolder:

Using a game engine you could design hate games to fulfill every clan or cults needs.

Pick and enemy… digitize them… load up the heat rays.

    Well here we are…
    Who you gonna kill today?

  • Hannah: then those of you who are evangelical christians should be loudly and virulently condemning the Left Behind series, LaHaye, Falwell and the rest of those sanctimonious iceholes who are abusing your faith to make money. If you care about your faith, your number one duty to it should be to stop all of these false prophets speaking on behalf of your diety, right?

That must be why I see all of the news and discussion about teh gay and baybee killerz all the time from the vast majority of religious information sources, and no prominent religious leaders (Ratzi the Nazi springs to mind immediately) condemning those who speak for the Invisible Sky Fairy out of turn. And no grassroots campaign from the truly spiritual to get rid of these blasphemers, and stop them from making the rest of you look bad.

Start criticizing those people, not the ones who point out their heresy to you. Maybe then the rest of us won’t lump you all in together so much…

  • Can you imagine the ruckus if this was aimed at Muslims, and it had the Muslims killing all the Christian infidels?

  • I’m thinking of writing a series of novels called “Swept Away”. It describes the paradise that Earth becomes starting the day after the rapture — when we are finally, eternally rid of these folks.

  • Tom wrote:

Such grassroots campaigns are building, Tom, though I guess they’re not on your radar yet.

Bear in mind that Christians who loathe doofuses like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell don’t have anything remotely equivalent to the Christian Broadcasting Network at their disposal to get their message out, so naturally you’ll hear more from the doofuses.

  • This game is for PC. I’m guessing that means it is DOA. Gaming is mostly console based these days, other that MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing games). How big is the PC game shelf in your local store? How about the XBOX and PS2 sections?

How many of the 60 million copies of the Left Behind series were sold to someone with a high end gaming PC? You can’t just stroll into Best Buy, oh wait, Wal-Mart for these people, and pick a gaming PC off the shelf like you can with a Nintendo, XBOX or PlaySation. Most PC gaming graphics cards cost more than those systems.

I think this has too many hurdles to be successful.

  • On the up side, you can unlock secret features just like in other video games. If you achieve the level of deacon, you can engage in sex with children and then claim you were trying to “convert” them.

There is also the Jerry Falwell option for doing hookers, as long as they’re Muslims or Catholics, it’s OK.

Finally, the most advanced players can get special evangelical training at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. Then they’re ready to rip the Anti-Christ a new one!!

  • Just what the borderline psychotic little fundies need. A model for mindless violence in the name of religion.

Sometimes I think the Xtian fundamentalists are jealous that the Islamic fundamentalists are the only ones that get to blow people up for their religion. (Well at least in terms of low-tech bombing.)

  • LOL DTK Rip the Anti-Christ a New One looks perfect for one of those announcement boards outside of churches where they advertise what the next sermon will be. Or maybe just a bumper sticker.

LaHaye said. “Our real goal is to have no one left behind.

If they don’t wake up to global warming, that’s exactly what they’ll achieve. No one left.

  • It just shows how hypocritical these redneck, bible banging Jethros are. They are the same people who got all worked up over a piece of mainstream fiction like The Da Vinci Code. Awhile back Newsweek did a story on this LaHaye guy and his writing partner who wrote this Left Behind bullshit and they struck me as being crazier than shithouse rats, albeit extremely rich ones.

  • New, form the makers of “Holy Land, Holy War”, comes:

    INQUISITION!!!

It’s the 15th Century, and only you can save Europe from Witches, Jews, and Mohameds!!
Rack ’em!! Torch ’em!! Iron Maiden ’em!!

Try to get the most conversions/deaths, and reach the top as GRAND INQUISITOR!!!

    Buy Inquistion TODAY!!!

(Thirty Years War expansion pack sold seperately)

  • I missed the bit in the Bible where Christ said, “Mow ye down all who disagree with you, with the automatic weapons of the Lord.”

I’m guessing the game manufacturers could also market this overseas by just swapping the New York graphics for Baghdad and replacing “Praise the Lord” with “Praise Allah.” Otherwise, it’s the same game, right? Kill the infidels?

Gah. I have to go throw up now.

  • To be honest with you I had this idea about 10 years ago.

Televengelists, of course. 🙂 I figure they deserve it the most.

On the up side, you can unlock secret features just like in other video games. If you achieve the level of deacon, you can engage in sex with children and then claim you were trying to “convert” them.

Or you can become a famous tele-preacher and secretly hire prostitutes, using money donated by your loyal followers.

  • It is intersting that the fight against violence in gaming by public officials is more about the blame game than reality. All things considered it’s still not the guns that kill…. It’s the people who kill so regardless it’s about ethics and morals than about a video game. I love violence in fiction, every avenue from gaming to movies…. Doesn’t mean i’m going to shoot 20 people for fun….
I like the game idea and hope that more like it arise.
