Bush now willing to consider drastic measures

We’re almost half-way through July, which means August is right around the corner — and that’s the month Bush likes to take off. The president easily broke the record last year for most vacation days for a two-term president (with three years to spare!) thanks in large part to the fact that he enjoys month-long respites in Crawford.

The Houston Chronicle’s Cragg Hines, however, notes that this year, Mr. Down Time might not be able to take all the time off in August to which he’s accustomed.

This could be getting serious. The White House is concerned enough about President Bush’s job rating and its possible effect on Republican chances in the November elections that word of reduction in vacation time at Crawford next month is being put about. […]

What with the approach of congressional elections as well as continuing rough patches with Iraq, Iran and North Korea, “White House officials have decided too much is at stake this year for Bush to spend so much time on vacation,” the Associated Press reported.

Officials “decided”? Wait a sec, isn’t Bush The Decider?

Regardless, if the president is willing to limit his vacation time in Crawford this August it will send quite a signal to the world: Bush must be really worried.

Let’s be serious CB.
Bush will be in Crawford come rain, shine, war, or election.
He doesn’t care about the election, Rove does, plus his political weight is near zero.
The smart money is on Crawford. This past year has been a rough one for George, he needs a vacation.

  • I thought Bush’s numbers went up when he hides out in Crawford. The single biggest downward force on his approval ratings are his public appearances. Maybe he wants to get a jump on those memoirs.

  • Any limit on his vacation time will be minimal … he’ll take a four-week vacation instead of a five-week vacation. There’s brush to clear.

  • Bush will be in Crawford come rain, shine, war, or election.

Actually, one thing I’ve noticed: his regular multi-day trips to Crawford ended with the Katrina debacle. He has made very few trips since.

  • Cindy Sheehan will follow him and he doesn’t like that jab of reality. I agree with Dale, the more time he takes off, the less damage he can do. Unfortuantely, I believe the damage is done. Between the corrupt congress and the stacked voting machines, our republic is as dead as was Rome’s after the ascent of Augustus.

  • Bush is going to spend more time hard at work? Good, given his past record of dubious achievements, that will really push his ratings down more.

  • I don’t think he had a great time in Crawford last year with Camp Casey and then Katrina. Karl probably advised him to steer clear. He is about the most worthless president we have ever had, so it makes no difference where he is. I think his entire presidency has been a long vaction for him. I don’t believe he has ever thought a problem through from beginning to end in his life, so it matters little where he is, he is still AWOL.

  • “There’s brush to clear.” – prm

Aren’t there illegal immigrants in Texas to do that kind of work for Dubya?

  • I think Jenna went to South America to check if Joseph Mengele’s house is available for when Shrub goes in hiding after the last years of his misadministration. Maybe Hugo Chavez will set him up? Tell President Shitstain to move his F-150 from the handicapped parking space at the Brokeback White House to Crudf__k, Texass, immediately.

  • “So, if he won’t be vacationing in Crawford, where will he be vacationing?” – Frak

Where he is usually vacationing, in the White House.

I mean, you don’t think he really works there, do you. Crawford is just for a change of scenery.

  • Bush is on permanent vaction from reality by living in a bubble .He surrounds himself with people and controlled events that project a carefree optimism and escape from factual reality where he can get high on lies.

  • I was wondering about this just the other day. I remember some NRO writer after Katrina conceding that no American president would ever again take a month long vacation.

    We shall see…

Some serious shit has tended to go down at the end of Bush’s summer vacations in the past and I always thought that it made him look totally out of touch.

  • Mr. President,

If you have been successful at ANYTHING in your Presidency, it’s your ability to vacation above and beyond everybodies expectations. Please don’t stop now. You have the chance to drive the record for number of days the President has slacked off beyond the reach of any future President.

So please, go on vacation. It’s relatively cheap (as compared to most of your fiascos), and it’s not as if we expect you to accomplish anything at all, anyways.

    Your boss,

    John Q. Public

  • What does clearing brush in Crawford actually entail? When I was growing up in New Mexico, we’d do it every couple of years with a chainsaw and pickaxe and something to haul it away.Every couple of YEARS. New Mexico and Crawford can’t be that different in climate and flora. To hear Bush tell it, his Crawford brush grows like a clan of spirited rabbits.

Maybe clearin’ brush is just a fancy way of saying “drankin’ whiskey”.

  • I always pictured a bunch of guys with post hole diggers running around all night planting brush for him to cut. Because there is no way in hell it grows that fast.

  • Yeah, Steven P, I did always wonder just exactly what kind of brush needed all that constant clearing, especially after I read that his “ranch” is only about 10 acres. Perhaps his ranch hands make sure there’s fresh brush around to keep him occupied and out of their hair?

  • When I think of eveything that Bush thinks that he has accomplished from “solving” global warming, leaving no child behind, reducing the rate of deficit spending, bringing democracy to Iraq, and fathoming the souls of the world leaders, he must feel entitled to a well earned vacation……
    I agree.
For all that he has done, I would like for Bush to stay indefinitely at Crawford with the same kind of extended vacation package that was given to Richard Nixon.
