Directing their ire at Maxine Waters

You know what won’t help the right with its race-relations problems? When high-profile conservatives make obviously [tag]racist[/tag] comments about a leading African-American lawmaker.

In her August 9 column, right-wing pundit [tag]Ann Coulter[/tag] wrote of African-American Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA):

Congresswoman [tag]Maxine Waters[/tag] had parachuted into Connecticut earlier in the week to campaign against [Sen. Joseph I.] [tag]Lieberman[/tag] because he once expressed reservations about affirmative action, without which she would not have a job that didn’t involve wearing a paper hat.

First, I suppose this is to be expected. Coulter hadn’t offended anyone publicly in days, so it was inevitable that she’d lash out with something like this.

Second, it doesn’t exactly help Joe Lieberman that he targeted Waters for criticism on the same day.

From Fox News:

Last night’s (8/9) “Special Report with Brit Hume” was wall-to-wall Lieberman/Lamont coverage in which the “All Star” Panel referred to Lieberman as being in the mold of “JFK or FDR”. The show kicked off, however; with a pro-Lieberman segment filed by GOP shill Carl Cameron.

Cameron started off slow, “Connecticut’s top Democrats rallied around Ned Lamont this morning after he defeated Joe Lieberman for the US Senate nomination.”

NL (clip): “We voted for change in the state of Connecticut last night, and I think people around the country are looking at Connecticut. We want to change the course, we want to change the course in Iraq.”

Cameron went on to (fairly) explain which party leaders have sided with Lamont, while airing clips from the acceptance/concession speeches. The tide turned, however, when Cameron diverted attention to Lieberman and the White House’s stance on the election.

JL: “I don’t want my party to be taken over by the Ned Lamont’s or Maxine Waters who will not give assurance to the people of America that we are prepared to do what needs to be done to protect our people in a dangerous world.”

Now, I realize the right-wing push-back against Lamont is “highly coordinated,” but when Joe Lieberman and Ann Coulter start attacking the same Lamont ally on the same day — and one of them uses racist language — you know Lieberman has strayed pretty far from the reality-based community.

Here’s a thought: how about some enterprising young reporter ask Lieberman for his reaction to Coulter’s comments?

Sort of makes one think about “The Call” from Rove to Lieberman…now doesn’t it?

  • JL: “I don’t want my party to be taken over by the Ned Lamont’s or Maxine Waters who will not give assurance to the people of America that we are prepared to do what needs to be done to protect our people in a dangerous world.”

Nice Joe, you’re going to give us assurances. Boy George II is going to give us assurances. Michael Chertoff is going to give us assurances. Don Rumsfeld is going to give us assurances.

You do realize that all these people failed to protect us from the 9/11 plot?

I don’t need your stinking assurances.

  • I’d love to compare the glowing assessments of Joementum from the crazy GOP loudmouths with what they may have said during the 2000 campaign and recount. I have nothing on this, but I’m sure they’ve all, you know, “flip-flopped” on Lieberman.

  • Thanks Ann, you’ve made your point. Clearly there’s no need for affirmative action programs when white, affluent women automatically think the only way a black person could get into positions of power is through affirmative action programs.

  • I just don’t understand why anyone gives Coulter any platforms anymore besides Fox? I’ve got to assume NBC’s corporate structure has some stake in her book since she has appeared on practically every MSNBC and NBC show to promote it.

  • “[Maxine Waters] would not have a job that didn’t involve wearing a paper hat.”

Jesus. What if someone wrote that without a rightwing noise machine, Coulter wouldn’t have a job that didn’t involve wearing bondage gear, high heels, and—oops.

  • “thought it was Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton that were supposed to scare us.”

The reich-wing blogs were all over this Wednesday, showing Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on either side of Ned Lamont. Eek, eek … real black people! The Republicans haven’t moved one angstrom from the Willie Horton stuff of George Bush I, or the Stepin Fetchit shtick for that matter. They’ve gladly taken on the old Southern Democrats’ mantle, and they ought to be called on it at every occasion.

  • Funny that Ann “plagerism schmagerism” Coulter thinks that Maxine Waters is unqualified for her job and only is employed due to her race.

How many other tall, thin blondes (men or women) are employed as right wing zealot hate mongers? If Ann Coulter was packing different equipment she would not be on the news programs. She would not be an author. She would not have a regular newspaper column.

What would she be? She would be another grey flannel suited, overweight, blowhard conservative and there would be some stiff (thank you Viagra) competition to land her ugly mug on TV.

I don’t seem to recall voting Ann Coulter into her job. Was she a recess appointment?

  • If we needed any more proof that Holy Joe is a pure DINO and totally in the pocket of the neocon crime family, their universal push to support him would be it.

    Go, Lamont!

  • Waters stood up in 2000 and walked out of Congress in protest in an effort to get Gore and Lieberman into the White House they rightfully won..

Waters did not turn her back on LIEberove, he turned his back on us all.

  • Joe has really lost it — now he’s saying that if Lamont is elected, terror plots like the one in Britain won’t be foiled. He really is following the Rove playbook.

  • you know, doubtful, i’m really glad you reminded me of that because it speaks volumes about JoeBlow’s character. Maxine was about the only person in all of D.C. that showed any spine in standing up to the coup that had just occurred, and Joe would have been the beneficiary — if only he’d shown that much spine in fighting over the Florida recount.

He may be called, and may view himself as, Holy Joe, but for that kind of ingratitude, incivility, and cheap shot i have to think he’ll rot in hell.

  • ***What would she be? She would be another grey flannel suited, overweight, blowhard conservative***

So…you’re saying that she’s really Lieberman in a dress and heels? I thought the shrill screeching sounded familiar—and that would explain why we never see the both of them on the same stage….

  • Funny. As someone who’s met Maxine Watrs personally (she used to be a good friend of my next-door neighbor 20 yers ago), and whos watched her politically from the beginning, anyone who thinks “affirmative action” (in the contemporary meaning of that term) had anything to do with her achievements has had their head so far up their ass for so long they must have forgotten what daylight looks like (of course, in Horse-face Annie’s case, her mother probably pushed her head up there after getting one good look at her in the operating room).

Of course, if you want to define “affirmative action” as sitting down, figuring out what you need to do to get where you want to go, and then taking action to follow the plan, Maxine Waters has one of the best records of affirmative action (whether you agree with her or not) of any politician of the past 30 years.

I love watching the righties, it’s always amusing to watch morons too stupid to know they are morons, prove their status with every action they take.

  • Ann Coulter, 2005:

‘Democrats oppose Janice Rogers Brown because she’s black.’

Judge Brown doesn’t wear a paper hat, either, so I’m not sure what Ann’s trying to say about Rep. Waters. It’s probably something terribly clever, though.

  • And then there’s George W. Bush, who without paternative action would not have a job without a paper hat….

  • . . . or (re Catherine #18) without “legacy” affirmative action placements in the Ivy Leagues. I’m quite certain his transcripts and test weren’t up to par. He took a spot from a more qualified bright applicant!

  • Can someone please explain why the Rethuglicans are so interested the Democrat Party since the huge win by Ned Lamont?

  • “Can someone please explain why the Rethuglicans are so interested the Democrat Party since the huge win by Ned Lamont?” – K-Man

Well, since the Republican’ts run everything, including the Democratic Party in D.C., they are upset that their candidate for the Democratic Nomination for Senator in Connecticut didn’t win. So they have to explain to the world that the primary voters in Connecticut got it wrong, and didn’t follow Karl Rove’s script.

Considering the lame performance by Jim Webb so far, I imagine not getting the right nominee this time was quite a shock to Karl.
