The religious right can’t even count on Wal-Mart?

Back in April, one of the nuttier religious right groups complained bitterly that Wal-Mart stores decided to sell “Brokeback Mountain” DVDs, including in-store advertising displays. A spokesperson for the American Family Association said, at the time, “It’s quite obvious to anyone who shops at Wal-Mart that they’re no longer the family-friendly company that they used to project in their image.”

With this in mind, I can’t wait to see how the far-right reacts to this.

[tag]Wal-Mart[/tag] Stores, the retail giant that grew up in the rural South, is moving to attract gay shoppers as it expands its presence in urban centers.

By entering into a partnership with the National [tag]Gay[/tag] & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce this week, the company “is making a very sincere effort to reach out to people who are a significant part of our customer base,” Wal-Mart spokesman Bob McAdam said Wednesday.

“I am proud of that effort,” he said.

Justin Nelson, co-founder and president of the four-year-old gay business coalition, said Wal-Mart “initiated the partnership.” What’s more, McAdam said the company is considering offering domestic partnership benefits to employees who qualify.

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said, “I don’t think cheap prices on goods from China will be enough to stop a rollback in their customer base if they choose to go down this aisle.”

Hmm, the [tag]religious right[/tag] (intolerant advocates of theocracy) vs. Wal-Mart (anti-union opponent of fair labor policies). Whom to root for….

How about the Jews, Koreans or Arabs? (Sorry, Andy; you had that one coming.)

Does anyone at Walmart qualify for married partnership benefits?

Frankly, I’ve got to back Walmart in this one. I don’t shop at the Theocratic Reactionary Gift Shop and Book Store.

  • I hope Walmart sticks to their guns on this and the religious right boycotts. Sounds like the best of both world’s to me.

  • Why root for anyone, If Walmart follows through, they loose money and the religious right gets egg on their face, again.

When are they going to learn that Jesus sits in the back seat when profits needs a ride ?

And let’s face it, any respectable gay person living in an urban area isn’t shopping at Walmart anyways.

  • I can understand Wal-Mart’s logic on this. Gay people have money and they buy stuff, so what’s not to like?

A purely cynical, profit-induced corporate policy but, hey, this is Wal-Mart we’re talking about here not the Little Sisters of Charity.

  • And let’s face it, any respectable gay person living in an urban area isn’t shopping at Walmart anyways.

    Isn’t that the truth.

  • And let’s face it, any respectable gay person living in an urban area isn’t shopping at Walmart anyways.

Unless they’ve got scads of children to house and get toys for. How ya like them apples, Tony Perkins?

  • There’s no contest. It’s a win for Wal-Mart. Tony Perkins is off his nut if he thinks “Chrisitians” will boycott Wal-Mart, in particular, rural “Christians” who have absolutely few other shopping options than the Wal-Mart Supercenter. And then there is every other shopper who isn’t going to give up the convenience and “cheap prices on goods from China.”

  • Oh, the Brokeback heartache…..when Wal-Mart quits you!

The religious right once again gets betrayed by cold corporate greed.
What those scoundrels won’t say to have their way, then break your heart by moving on to the next pretty face. The obvious fissure of the right wing coalition of Greed and God is so exploitable. Let’s hope for a civil war between these fanatic factions

  • I’d say that it’s a win for progressives, perhaps temporary and perhaps needing an asterisk, but at least a win. And it’s a win for enlightened capitalism when a predatory organization like Wal-mart has to try to appeal to the “others”. This will get a lot of smaller organizations thinking about being bettter citizens.

  • May this be a lession for the religious right. There is more money to be made when appealing to the mass (including those segments the religious right finds offensive) market. It is about the money Mr. Perkins. Wal-Mart thought your yelling might actually make a difference in their sales, then they realized you are a little poodle barking at the boogyman and no one is really listening. Most people care about their own comforty, and most want not shope or buy or patronize a place based on someone elses say so, especially if they are denied something they want or inconvenced in some way.

  • Walmart starts putting big rainbow stickers on its stores.
FRC bashes its own brains out with an attempted boycott.
Walmart freaks and starts acting even more like it has a conscience to make up the marginal losses from the boycott.
Tony Perkins is (finally) institutionalized with a total meltdown.

    *sigh* I can dream, can’t I?

  • I’d like to see a bible belt boycott of Walmart.

    Yeah right.

I remember talking to some of these guys back in the 90s when Disney (which owns ESPN) was being boycotted.

Ain’t a one of them was willing to miss out on college football on ESPN to support the boycott.

Perkins has been into the holy water a bit too much if he thinks a good ol boy is going to give up everyday low prices to support his Jihad.

  • I’ll have to go with WalMart on this one, if only because they’re standing up to the “do-what-we-say-or-else” Theofascists. And I’d really like to see someone do a parody of a WalMart ad, where the little smiley-faced guy “flips off” Jimmy Dobson. Kind of like when Mickey Mouse gave the finger to the ayatollahs with the caption that read, “Hey, Iran!”

  • In case you’ve missed this, the AFA’s also going after Sam’s Club Warehouse stores because they’re using the term “Hollidays” in their advertising and not “Christmas”.

You guys really have got to subscribe to their newsletters – they be a hoot.

  • I back WalMart on this one too! In fact, changes have begun at WalMart. I’ve noticed at at our local store and from the call backs I receive after filing complaints for different things with 1-800-WalMart. Fpr some reason, they seem to be trying to change things…whether because of losing tons of money in lawsuits or conscience, the changes are positive. I hope they keep it up.

The religious right is a bunch of phony assed Xtians hiding behind the cross and pimping Jesus. Who cares about them anyway? They are disgusting cramming their crap down our throats!
