ABC’s controversial 9/11 docudrama — Day 6

I’m pleasantly surprised to see this story starting to generate some real attention.

Days before its scheduled debut, the first major television miniseries about the Sept. 11 attacks was being criticized on Tuesday as biased and inaccurate by bloggers, terrorism experts and a member of the Sept. 11 commission, whose report makes up much of the [tag]film[/tag]’s source material.

The six-hour miniseries, “[tag]The Path to 9/11[/tag],” is to be shown on [tag]ABC[/tag] on Sunday and Monday. The network has been advertising the program as a “historic broadcast” that uses the commission’s report on the 2001 attacks as its “primary foundation.”

On Tuesday, several liberal blogs were questioning whether ABC’s version was overly critical of the Clinton administration while letting the Bush administration off easy.

I’d say the blogs were doing more than just “questioning”; blogs have pointed out specific problems with the [tag]docudrama[/tag], including its portrayal of events that simply did not happen.

The NYT piece did note a statement from ABC that explained the network’s perspective on the controversy. “The events that lead to 9/11 originally sparked great debate,” the statement said, “so it’s not surprising that a movie surrounding those events has revived the debate.”

By referring to the complaints as a “debate,” ABC seems anxious to characterize the [tag]movie[/tag]’s obvious mistakes as simply a matter of opinion. This, too, is a disservice to viewers. This film bills itself as an objective and factual recitation of real-life events, but it shows viewers incidents that have been created out of whole cloth. There isn’t a “debate” about the facts; there’s a debate about ABC’s culpability in intentionally misleading a national television audience about a national tragedy.

Since yesterday’s item on the docudrama, we’ve learned quite a bit more about the project’s serious substantive flaws.

For example, the movie relays a common myth circulated in conservative circles about the media inadvertently tipping off Osama bin Laden about U.S. surveillance. A CIA official is shown saying, “[E]ver since the Washington Post disclosed that we intercepted his calls, UBL [Usama bin Laden] stopped using phones altogether. He’s using couriers now, like they did a thousand years ago.” This myth, frequently used by conservative media critics to bolster their notion of reporters undermining national security, was debunked years ago.

In another bizarre scene from the movie, Clinton national security adviser Sandy Berger is shown talking to a CIA agent who said he had bin Laden in his sights and wanted the go-ahead to kill him. Berger “freezes in dithering apprehension” and the agent never gets the green light. The scene is a particular favorite of the far-right. “[O]ne unbelievable sequence shows how … Sandy Berger … actually hung up the phone on the CIA agent on the ground,” one conservative blogger said.

This, too, is complete fiction. Berger said, “It’s a total fabrication. It did not happen.” More importantly, 9/11 Commission member Richard Ben-Veniste said he is “disturbed” by the scene because there’s no evidence to support it.

Digby, meanwhile, offers a couple of must-read items. One explains that this docudrama, instead of being based on the 9/11 Commission report, is actually more in line with a book written by ABC’s John Miller (a book which the network optioned for the project). The other explores Disney’s slide into conservative-ville. “Something very strange is happening in Mouseland,” Digby noted.

One other point to consider. CBS plans to air an actual documentary on the fifth anniversary of the attacks, which includes the only known footage from inside the Twin Towers that morning, and features real-life dialog from heroic firefighters who were on the scene. Several CBS affiliates are afraid to put it on the air — because the documentary shows some New York firefighters on 9/11 who used profanity.

Given the context, it’s an interesting dilemma — ABC has no qualms about showing a fake documentary with a political axe to grind, but CBS is afraid of airing a real documentary with real-life footage of heroes.

There’s something wrong with this picture.

“There’s something wrong with this picture.”

Yep, we live in Boy George II’s fantasy of America, ably abetted by the fantasy creators at Disney. Soon we will be seeing movies where Dinosaurs lived with Man 3000 years ago.

  • Hard to paint a more honest picture of America. There’s corporate greed, exploitation of human tragedy, disregard for truth, right-wing conspiracy/fantasy, fear of (honest) profanity, blatant disregard of national interest and … all that’s left out is an adolescent view of sex and hatred of science (I don’t know, maybe that’s in there, too).

  • America, where “G” rated lies trump “PG” rated truth any day of the week.

How does the world spell “toady mouthpiece” for our Mickey Mouse gov’t? Why it’s as simple as ABC.

  • “There’s something wrong with this picture.”

Indeed. It’s against the rules to question anything Republican, regardless of whether their stands are logically or morally consistent. The Right is, by self-proclaimation, always right. Until reality-based people completely destroy that central tenet in the minds of the public, things like this documentary and coverage of the “debate” surrounding it will go on.

As far as profanity, I’m relatively certain you’ll hear worse in any girls or boys middle school bathroom. Maybe we should ban bathrooms — or middle school? (Now that I think about it, I guess that’s the purpose of home schooling…)

  • Anyway someone can buy the airtime right before the show starts saying

“The opinions expressed in ‘The Path to 9/11’ are not the views of historical fact and reality.”

  • Ed Stephan, excellent post.

It truly is no wonder why people hate our (the White House’s) definition of freedom. It’s pathetic. We have become everything true religion detests, but worse, because we claim to be a nation based on religion.

  • I see in the paper this morning that ABC will present the show without commercials — it had originally stated that it would have only limited commercial interruptions. Wonder if this was because the network was anxious to do some sort of public service, or because advertisers chose not to be associated with a manifest piece of shit?

It’s starting to look like ABC, noting the success of “that cable network,” has decided to become the over-the-air Fox. Harry Reasoner, Howard K. Smith and Peter Jennings are probably all turning over in their graves.

By the way, want to know which 9/11 documentary I (and most others, I imagine) are planning on watching? Neither.

  • o.k.

here’s an advertising slogan to whack the walt disney corporation with:

    “walt disney corp –
the american company that sold out the nation,
so it could sell out a movie.”

    back story,

    (data courtesy of digby):

1.the walt disney corporation owns abc televison.

    2. walt disney has made a movie based on c.s. lewis’ christian trilogy “the narnia chronicles”

    3. walt disney needs this movie to sell well and is planning to market this movie in a big way and expects right wing christians to be big consumers of the film.

    4. the director of the disputed 9/11 movie which abc television says it will show on sept 10,11 is a right wing christian movie maker.

the screen writer is a right wing word smith.

the walt disney corporation expects that right wing media personalities (rush limbauigh, bill o’reilly, et al.) will help it sell “the narnia chronicles” in return for disney corp’s having had abc television show the right wing film “the road to 9/11”.

    “the walt disney corporation –

the american company that sold out the nation so it could sell out a movie.”

  • The additional little irritant attached to the whole potty mess of potage… ABC is sending out the tapes as educational material to untold number of schools. Probably getting a hefty tax break in the process.

  • I hate to see conspiracies, but ABC’s plans seem to be oozing with them. As #9 (orionATL) noted, there may be an agenda to sell a movie. It obviously stinks of right-wing control of main-stream media. It’s a pre-election attempt to brand Democrats as “bad guys” by tarring Clinton with the failures of the neocons. Considering the sad ignorance of the electorate (WMDs, devil belief, etc) the mere presentation of this nonsense will make it a “fact” to the average TV crowd.
It won’t matter that it is a lie. It’s on TV it must be true!
It will assume the position of a “truth.”

  • OK, here the names, titles and email addresses for a number of key senior Disney decision makers I found, starting at the top
with the CEO and board of directors are at the bottom.

ABC may profit from the predictable controversy but airing a film designed to obfuscate Bush’s responsibility for 9/11 will cause ABC to suffer greatly in the estimation of serious people.

Disney and ABC should leave the RNC propaganda to Fox, it’s not ABC’s demographic.

  • Isn’t it interesting that ABC, a national tv network owned by Disney, is putting out this miniseries on the anniversary of 9-11…..perfect timing …for ABC.

Many forget that ABC is a network that lives on advertising revenue, i.e., more viewers means more $$$.

Simple as that. They are only doing this to generate sensation and controversy, and as a result, more $$$ – they dont care about the the truth, or a real investigation what REALLY happened on 9-11-01, or which administration is to blame. They just want eyeballs.

This is just entertainment….pretending to be factual…

But ABC is no better than the supermarket tabloids and FOX news, which we all know is pure republican propaganda b***sh*t.
This so called “peice” should be labeled as being a FICTIONAL movie, and NOT BASED ON FACTS.

ABC, you should not market this as “accurate” – that’s just dishonest and misleading, and causes people to accuse you of being a right wing christian organization…..which it seems like you are, doesn’t it ?

The world will never, ever know what actually happened because the the Federal Government will never tell us. It would simply be too embarassing. The politicians and their henchmen of both parties failed us in stopping this from happening for a variety of reasons. You could go back decades and blame administrations going back to Nixon if you want, for events that supposedly lead up to 9-11. America has a long history of meddling in other countries affairs, which builds resentment and anger.

ABC – you should at least be honest and not tell people this is not even “close to the facts” and also NOT add “scenes” to the story – such as the one where the Clinton NSA Sandy Berger is shown saying he didn’t have authorization, and didnt give the go ahead to capture & kill Bin Laden.

Sandy Berger, and the 9-11 Commission, stated on CNN that this event DID NOT EVER HAPPEN.

Why include this when it will only promote a LIE and accusations of a right wing slant?

Lucid Analysis, Thanks for the email addresses ! I plan on using them…..not expecting anything to come out of it, other than making me feel like I gave some feedback to ABC.

Who knows. Maybe they’ll listen & learn from this. Not counting on it though.
