Worst … talking point … ever

Following up on my earlier post on the subject, I foolishly believed that the fact that the Bush administration, at the request of right-wing blogs, magazines, and lawmakers, accidentally published nuclear secrets on the Internet would have been humiliating to conservatives. They wanted classified materials online so they could prove non-existent WMD were in Iraq, and the whole idea became a dangerous fiasco. It’s an embarrassment under any circumstances, but just a few days before an election, this kind of revelation has the potential to be devastating.

Or so I thought. I’ll spare you the details of the far-right’s rants, but Memorandum can point you in the right direction. In summary, conservatives are thrilled by the NYT scoop because, as they see it, the administration published seized Iraqi intelligence documents. If there were detailed secrets about how to make a nuclear bomb, this means … wait for it … Saddam “had a nuclear weapons program and was plotting to build an atomic bomb.”

The right can hardly contain their glee. They were right all along! How foolish does the left feel now!

Uh, no. The NYT article said the documents offered “detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war.” This little tidbit isn’t buried deep into the article; it’s right up in the second paragraph. It’s kind of hard to miss.

In other words, the right is taking a humiliating article and making matters considerably worse by misunderstanding what it actually says. The revelations aren’t proof that Saddam had an active nuclear weapons program before we invaded in 2003; it’s proof that he sought nuclear weapons before we invaded in 1991. Of course, we already knew that.

Jonathan Schwarz offered a handy little summary.

After the Gulf War, however, the Iraqi nuclear program was destroyed by the IAEA and never reconstituted. During this time the IAEA required Iraq to explain in detail exactly what their pre-91 nuclear program achieved. Copies of these documents were given to the U.N. on repeated occasions, including in fall, 2002. Before any were publicly released, sensitive information about weapon design, etc. was excised.

After our newest war huge numbers of Iraqi government documents were captured. America’s right pushed for them to be publicly released online. (They believed the documents would hold overlooked clues to Saddam’s Chamber of Secrets hiding his WMD and valentines from Osama.)

Now the New York Times has reported that the uncensored versions of the nuclear documents were accidentally included in the online release.

For reasons that only make sense in the bizarro world of right-wing blogs, this revelation is good news. I have no idea what they’re talking about. Scratch that — they have no idea what they’re talking about.

The mind reels.

Reading comprehension (or reading for that matter) has never been an intellectual (?) strength for this branch of the rightwing.

Didn’t we know? Books are for pussies! Real men just assume and BELIEVE.

  • It is hard to describe just how far off the reality scale these ranting loonies really are. Lets just pretend for a moment that these documents were not pre-1991 (and further lets pretend that Dumbya’s father and Deputy Dick weren’t involved in knowingly letting Saddam off despite these documents). Lets assume that these documents were from 2003.

    So freakin’ what?

Did Saddam want nukes? of course. So do the leaders of about 100 other countries — you don’t see us bombing them.

Do lots of countries have basic plans for how to build a nuke? Surely. But as NK recently proved, even if you have the plans and the materials, chances are you’ll still build a dud. This is nuclear science, after all. Oh yeah – and we haven’t gone all “shock and awe” on NK or any other country that has the plans.

It is such a far cry from having drawings to actually having a WMD prograpm to actually having the WMDs themselves that if this is the best the Loonies on the Right can do, we ought to be really ashamed we aren’t routinely kicking their asses.

  • Look – If they couldn’t understand the Kerry comment in context, what makes you think they’ll understand an article written in the NY Times?

  • Damn, how can I get in touch with these guys? I have a bridge in NYC I’d like to sell along with some prime ocean-front real estate in Nevada. And I’ve got a zillion dollar bank account in Nigeria that I can’t access. Maybe they can help me out. What a great illustration of there’s one born every minute.

If I were a nice person I might feel bad as I watched these morons clutch after some type of rope as they flounder in an ever deeping ocean of proof that ShrubCo is the worst thing to happen to the USA. As it is I want to toss a concrete life vest to these arse hats.

  • they have no idea what they’re talking about.

    Do they ever?

The trouble is, the truth doesn’t matter – this is just another scarepoint to move a few voters who’re too dumb to stop and listen.

  • I’m so glad the wingnuts are happy. Do you think maybe they could have been happy just to announce they found documents from Saddam’s 1980’s nuclear program without releasing them to the world?

Of course not. They have to betray everything good about this country instead.

    Effing morons!

  • I love the National Review’s spin that, even if the info was from pre-Gulf War, that Iraq still had the documents so, you know, they were still dangerous.

Of course, it ignores the fact that the whole world knew Iraq had the documents, and that Iraq could do absolutely nothing about it.

  • Since the average remaining republican believer has an IQ of about fifty, this isn’t a surprise.

But if you get a chance to talk to one, ask them why the people who Bush repeatedly sent looking for evidence of WMDs would “miss” these documents. Was it incompetence, or did they do it deliberately?

Drugrush Limpballs had a theory awhile back, it had to do with “Clintonistas” who were working in “the shadow government”.

The mind reels when you consider he has millions of listeners. Please, someone, invent a cure for stupidity.

  • I was watching MSNBC this morning and one of their women reporters was talking about blogs’ reaction to the latest homosexual evangelist to be outed. She described the left wing blogs as “sleazy.” Reading the right wing’s response to this fabricated frenzy, I have to say I’d rather be sleazy than drinking their koolaid.

  • Just because I like pimping myself so much, here’s my slow-mo takedown of that dopehead from the National Review.

And the thing to remember is that he initially was trumpeting all this solely based on an abridged version of the article from Drudge, who had failed to mention the 1991 part. So he really thought this was something new and breathtaking. But even after he finally read the article and noted the 1991 date, he refused to backdown from his initial claim, but rather focused on some other parts that he imagined were damaging. Yet it was fairly obvious that he knew his mistake, but just couldn’t admit to it.

  • She described the left wing blogs as “sleazy.”

Did she say anything about the guy who actually had sex with a male prostitute after bashing gays with every ounce of energy? Or mention that the guy was also setting up a meth deal?

Your liberal media, ladies and gentlemen.

    **bangs head on wall**

  • What do you expect from those guys. We all saw them spin Kerry’s comments way out of context eventually getting Kerry to appologize for something did not mean.

Esentially Kerry appologized to the troops for being swiftboated again. Ridiculous.

Of course they are going to spin this with utter disregard for the facts. They are desparate. The election is near. Anything to stay in power.

  • Isn’t life becoming more like a Monty Python Flying Circus episode every day? You’ve got to laugh or it will drive you crazy.

  • They’ve got nothing else to work with and they’ve been very successful at conveying outright lies before. Look at how they were able to confuse people about the connection between Osama and Iraq. Look at how they’re able to confuse people into thinking that veterans are traitors while those who got around serving are the patriots. They know that they have a shot at putting this over. The only thing standing in their way, in fact, is the number of reporters who are no longer buying their crap.

  • spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin spin.

It doesn’t matter what the story is, it ALWAYS benefits the repugs. Just get their interpretation out there ASAP so it gets reported. Some people will believe it. By the time the details are sorted out, people will have moved on. We know its BS, but they’ve lost our vote along time ago (if they ever even had it), so they don’t even care what we think.

The only problem is that by now, the only people who would believe this spin are voting republican no matter what – this probably won’t change anyone’s mind.

  • Re: #16 – exactly.

The truth doesn’t matter to the right, what matters to them is if they can spin this and convince some more people that up is down and black is white. I repeat, the truth doesn’t matter to them. It’s all about the spin and whether it sticks.

  • We’re now at the point where their inability to get anything write is now working on a logarithmic scale – if you plotted their public stupidity on a graph, the curve would now be close to vertical.

I love it – these bozos can’t find their ass with both hands on a clear day with a 2-hour advance notice.

  • Well, don’t be surprised at the response of our right-wring brethern. After all, their fearless leader was too stupid to understand the most recent joke offered up by the Honorable Senator from Mass.

Just to clarify: George Bush, Sen. Kerry was calling you stupid, stupid, not our beloved troops fighting and dying for your vested interests and stupidity.

Now on to the other: No, the website doesn’t verify the rightwing rantings about WMD. It allowed anyone who wished to access documents on nuclear technology, Supposedly, such an ability by potential enemies was being actively interdicted by our Commander-in-Chief and his crack squad of terrorist busters. We now see, for those not in denial, that Mr. Bush and his minions have been hoodwinking our cherished nation and its political heritage.

You know who to vote out! -Kevo

  • Can’t believe the NYT or the liberal ‘s who hate America…
But, I do believe, with proof now, that Iraq had WMD….proof doesn’t mean much to these folks commenting here…only anger and hate toward the USA and their fellow countrymen….who’s gonna protect you numbskulls when they come for you…???
Do youthink calling them names, or cursing at them will keep them from killing you and your loved ones???
Do you think Democratic party can protect you more??? Will they??
The answer is no….and the proof is in every word they speak….

    And as for Kerry….mis-spoke? Misinterpreted?

Heck no…it’s simply how he feels…go back to the days of his supposedly honorable service…..I remember him calling American soldiers criminals and killers of babies….yep, John is all for the USA…….

Sorry folks, I’m voting Republican and after the election…not much will change……W will still be President and the dem’s will still be weiner’s…..

  • Hey Jerry, did they teach you how to use grammar and apostrophes and stuff like that in the wolves’ den where you were raised?

  • We’re completely screwed. We are living the worst man-made nightmare the world has ever seen. Every day, our jaws drop to the floor in disbelief at how perfectly incompetent, stupid and wrong nearly half of Americans are. We pick our jaws up and naively try to make some sense out of it. It’s like being beat up by the playground bully all over again (with the rest of your class chanting in support of him; yeah, I’ve been there). All one could do was ask “why”, “why are you doing this?”, as though bullies have any reasons or motivations beyond that of a gorilla.

Civility is priceless and tenuous, and it is dying. These people don’t put much stock in Darwin’s theories but they sure do like the idea of societal breakdown and survival of the fittest, meanest and dumbest.

So, here we are, a society of liars and thugs, with a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons left over from a time when the principles of truth and diligent study meant something.

Sorry to be so bleak but this is going to get ugly.
