Grover Norquist on Don Sherwood, the Pennsylvania Republican who lost his House seat to Chris Carney and whose mistress accused him of choking her: “Bob [sic] Sherwood’s seat would have been overwhelmingly ours, if his mistress hadn’t whined about being throttled.” (via Pandagon)

Glenn Beck to Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim ever elected to Congress: “[Y]ou are a Democrat. You are saying, ‘Let’s cut and run.’ And I have to tell you, I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, ‘Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.'” (via Media Matters)

And, of course, various right-wingers want to blow up the State Department.

(And I haven’t even mentioned Coulter or Malkin.)

What more can you expect from a party that now welcomes Trent Lott as if nothing happened?

  • Why do you think they’re called “wingnuts”?

    That they’re insane loser loonies is surprising? They’re all like this idiot in Los Angeles – some fat loser still fighting pimples at age 39 living in mom’s basement with a dead-end life. (I love that this guy is all that – proving the stereotype has a basis in fact).

  • Yes, these people are insane and borderline nationalist psychotics but having them bleating this insanity as a minority party only serves to make it clear they have gone round the twist.

    When the GOP had their jackboot firmly on America’s neck lunatics like this were dangerous as they had some influence on the nuttier in the majority party. Once the idea is out there and validated there is a real possibility a fringe idea could become accepted.

    Let them spin and spin until they spiral off the planet.

  • The question is, can Dems connect with the public sufficiently to make these “insane and borderline nationalist psychotics” (to borrow from MNProgressive) appear as out of touch as they are? The hardcore wingnuts will never be convinced, but isolated they can’t win national majorities.

  • You know, we on the left have been accused of being angry or “unhinged,” but I don’t recall any moonbats sending white powder to broadcasters, or sending death threats to war supporters, or using racism to win an election.

    But we must also realize that these people are NOT true Republicans. My dad’s a Republican. Lincoln was a Republican.

    These people are Neoconservatives. For them, power is the only thing — power over the machinations of government, power over people’s personal lives, and power over the rest of the world.

    And that’s what makes them so damn dangerous.

  • The Glenn Beck thing is the most disgusting racist statement I have seen on a “mainstream” TV program ever…..to insult a sitting Congressman solely b/c he is a Muslin speak volumes about the complete lack of civility on the other side of the aisle…

    Ellison handled it brilliantly, if it were me I would have come back with
    “Glenn youre a Republican, are you a pedophilic racist????”
    believe me I hate to stoop to their level but Beck’s comments were outrageous

    Also I believe in free speech and capitalist principles but it is no excuse for the BlogADS program to advertise for Glenn Beck (that silly ad promoting Glen Beck’s “The Extemist Agenda” like they have all week on the major liberal blogs, see the left column of AmericaBlog, Kos, et al)…..his ad should be removed immediately due to this incident!!!!!!!

    Small quibble: Islam is a religion, not a race. Glenn Beck’s a noxious, hateful little man. But his comments here are more bigoted than racist.

    And reading Pam Atlas (or watching her “video blogs”) show how painful mental illness can be.

  • You’re right, lib4, Beck’s comment was disgusting. And I suspect that his bigotry was backed up by racism. And yet CNN keeps putting him on the air. Where’s the accountability there? They’re actually giving him a major national platorm to spew his bigotry.

    And I agree with you, Unholy Moses. Who on the left says stuff like this? The usual comparison is Michael Moore, but when has he ever expressed bigotry? The worst criticism I have of him is that he wasn’t hard enough on Saddam. And maybe he tells his stories selectively at times. But whether its him, or Franken, or any of the other leading “leftists” in the media, they’re not advocating blowing up U.S. government buildings, and their followers aren’t either. And these aren’t just two peripheral conservatives. We’re talking about a leading GOP lobbyist, a true insider to whom everyone in the party must pay their respects (including McCain), and a CNN host!

    So Phil Donahue is canned at MSNBC even though he got great ratings for being too “left wing” when he (rightly) challenged the veracity of the prewar intelligence…..bigoted Glenn Beck and Michael Savage are handed primetime TV gigs without question……..thats the “liberal media” for ya I guess

    and lets not forget the media has paid scant attention this week to the capture of a RW blog fanatic who sent white powder to Olberman and others

  • I will personally beat the fuck out of Norquist, and if he complains, then I’ll beat him down again for complaining about being beat down. What a complete pansy loser this guy is. I have always wondered about these anti-regulatory zealots. Do they not have children or grandchildren of their own that will have to survive in the world we are creating? All this relaxation of environmental regulations… do they care if their offspring drink poisoned water, and breathe poisoned air? What if his grandchild came down with arsenic poisoning, or lead poisoning? Would he care?

  • If we can use puppies, kittens, hamsters, and small simians for research, then why not wingnuts? Put these bizarro freakazoid ‘phobes into cages, and test Monsanto’s nex-gen Roundup on ’em. It they don’t shrivel in 72 hours or less—then pack them in salt, and ship them to the Cheney dining room….

  • To be fair to Grover (not that I’m prone to doing so normally), I think he was being funny. The next line in that Q&A is:

    Any lessons from the campaign? “Yes. The lesson should be, don’t throttle mistresses.”

    I didn’t like when the Republicans tried to make a serious statement out of John Kerry’s recent buffoonery, so I don’t think we should make anything out of what seems clear to me is a joke. I mean, the word “throttle” in and of itself is funny.

    Glenn Beck, though, wasn’t kidding and deserves all the opprobrium and venom sent his way.
