I’m sorry to be the one to bring you the bad news, if you haven’t heard it already, but Rick Santorum won’t — repeat: won’t — be running for president in ’08.
“Absolutely, positively not,” he said. “Absolutely not.”
I feel for Dan Savage. However much we dislike him, wouldn’t it have been so much more fun if he’d decided to run? Now we may be stuck with Romney as the leading social conservative in the GOP field.
Santorum and Allen can hang out together, then. I’m told Allen gives great BBQ parties…

I heard speculation during local election coverage on NPR that Santorum may run for governor in Pennsylvania in 2010. Has anyone else heard this?
Rick Santorum, one of the best arguments that if you couldn’t possibly qualify for a responsible job in the real world, get elected to public office. Damn, that sounds like a conservative talking about public employment…

Anything to get him out of Virginia please.
Maybe we should all write to him and tell him how god told us that we need Santorum to run for president to save us from the evil democrats.
Or is there too big a chance that this could backfire and that he might actually win?
Maybe he’ll do a Nixon. After defeat, run for governor, then eventually for president once his image has been cleansed.
I just can’t see the good people of Pennsylvania electing him governor. I realize he can still win in some of the less urban counties, but I doubt he’ll ever be able to shake off the stink of extremism enough to win elsewhere.
Anyone from PA out there? What do you think?

Oh yes, shades of Pat Buchanan and Alan Keyes, neither of whom did their party any favours with their wing-nuttery.

Micheal, I’m from PA. I grew up in the southwestern part of the state outside of Pittsburgh and I currently resided smack dab in the middle of the state, the part often compared to Alabama or as we often refer to it Pennsyltucky. This part of the state would vote for Santorum tomorrow if they could. I don’t think he would stand a chance anytime soon in the population centers. However, four years is a long time. I think his chance four years hence will depend on what he does next. If he stays in Virginia-sorry Lance-and goes for the big bucks on K Street he will have a hard time of it. Should he actually lives a sainted life for the next four years, say fighting poverty in Africa which David Brooks seems to think is his major contribution while in the Senate, then he may have a shot at the governors house. My guess is he’s going after the money.
Slick Rick is going to be a very busy person for the foreseeable future. He’ll have to work two jobs, just to keep his kids in that expensive e-school that the citizens of Pennsylvania have been paying for. He’ll also have to find a new home to live in, as the one he owns is only a two-bedroom, and is not rated to house a family with lotsof children. Rumor has it that the local building department is keeping close tabs on this—and are threatening to pull the occupancy permit for the structure, should it be “over-occupied.”
Then, there’s the issue of how a lot of people—a “really, really BIG bunch of people”—do not want this man and his family back in their neighborhood. Although, it’s not as if he ever actually “lived” there….

The think is that Ricky “Man on Dog” Santorum doesn’t really have a “tarnished” image. He lost because of his wingnut extremism, not because of any hint of corruption (say, like Allen). As such he can run whenever he feels the environment has changed in Pennsylvannia.
