GOP lawmaker wants to win in Iraq by ‘spreading the message of Jesus Christ’

Shortly after the attacks of 9/11, Ann Coulter argued, in a syndicated column, that the only effective way to respond to Middle Eastern terrorists is to “invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.” It sparked an outrage that led National Review to fire Coulter as a columnist.

Of course, Coulter is a professional lunatic; she writes indefensible columns in order to offend people. Everyone expects idiocy from Coulter, in large part because she’s responsible to no one but herself. Others, say, members of Congress, are held to a slightly higher standard.

Which is why this is so breathtaking (via Atrios).

Having won the election by only a hair’s width and almost getting himself kicked out of Congress seems to have had some profound psychological effects on poor Mr. Hayes. A speech that flip-floppin’ Robin gave last week at the Concord Rotary Club seems to prove he has finally gone off the deep end.

Our local weekly newspaper the “Concord Standard and Mount Pleasant Times” reported on Mr. Hayes speech in his hometown:

[Hayes said,] “Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men. Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior.”

Now, I’m not at all familiar with the Concord Standard and Mount Pleasant Times, and can’t speak to its credibility. It appears to be just a community weekly newspaper, common in many parts of the country. Moreover, Hayes’ comments have not been reported in any other source.

But if this local report is accurate, and Hayes actually said that Christian evangelism is necessary for peace in Iraq, he has quite a bit of explaining to do.

Well, maybe he can work with the group that stole Jesus’ foreskin and try to clone Jesus (although, could they put aside their opposition to cloning if it was performed to bring back the Saviour). A living, breathing Jesus, albeit a cloned one, would no doubt be a huge help in converting those poor savages, and would really fire up the evangelical base to get their rear ends over to Iraq to help out.

  • [Hayes said,] “Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men. Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior.”

    **********
    Crusades anyone?… Anyone? … Bueller?

I think they’ve had enough message spreading by the US and its “Christians”, don’t you?

  • I’m not exactly sure what Bubba meant by “A living, breathing Jesus, albeit a cloned one, would no doubt be a huge help in converting those poor savages”
But I do agree with his idea of cloning jesus. Then everytime jesus would be about to give his opinion on how to handle the various problems of the world, we would cut off his mic and let Jerry Falwell or Dobson or Coulter answer for him.
Then we would take cloned jesus dress him up in cool fatigues, give him 2 of the Predator movie guns ( ya know the one Jesse Ventura carried around), and let him to do some holy converting (Of course if he’s converting by the gun, he’ll have to have a stogie in his mouth.)

  • Not to be disrepectful to the Almighty or anything, but wouldn’t it be a hoot if they did clone Jesus and he turned out to be a short, dark-skinned, curly-haired guy instead of the blonde, blue-eyed Raphaelite stud muffin we see depicted on every church wall on the planet?

And who said quite clearly that the Rapture was a fantasy and that the entire mega-uber-evangelist-Republican-Dominionist subculture was an abomination in the eyes of God and whose leaders should be put to work shoveling horse manure for the rest of their natural lives?

    Yeah, that would be cool.

  • Perhaps Robin forgot that the Holy Roman Empire and various other Christian nations tried that in the 1500s, eleven times give or take. The folks at the sharp end of “the message of Jesus Christ” have never forgotten it (Orthodox Christian-sack of Constantinopal, Jews(various pogroms of the way to the holy land) and of course, Muslims.)

The message “Peace on Earth, goodwill towards men” seems to get lost in the translation after killing a few Muslims.

  • Curmudgeon,

So, what you’re saying is that our current image of Christ is based on the ignorace of artists during the Dark and Middle Ages on what a person living in 1st Century Judea looked like?

    That’s just crazy talk.

Now my personal belief, if they cloned Jesus, she’d be black.

  • “Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior”

    WTF?

Jezus Cripes I thought Bush was crazy. I wonder if the locals would like another shot at the voting booth yet?

  • “Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men.”

So does that mean he is for the immediate withdrawal of the occupying forces? Hard to learn about peace when someone is rolling a tank over your foot.

Oh well, if he wants to go out there and personally knock on a few doors, I’ll chip in for the damn ticket.

  • Islam accepts the birth of Jesus and even recognizes him as one of the prophets. As far as the peace on earth and goodwill towards men, it was the “christian” side that invaded Iraq, tortured folks at Abu Ghraib and supported Saddam as long as he was killing folks we liked him killing. Hayes needs to look in the mirror first before getting all righteous.

  • “Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men. Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior.”

So which “message” are we talking about? The Catholic one? Lutheran one? Methodist one? Mormon one? Baptist? Pentacostal? Presbyterian? Anglican? Episcopal? Church of the Machine?

  • The guy had me going until the “birth of the Savior” bit. Sure it would be great to talk about peace on earth and good will towards men. But once you start talking about “the Savior” then it’s just trying to convert the poor saps.

Besides, what is important is not the “birth” of the Savior (Christmas) it is the “death and resurection” of the Savior (Easter).

It’s sad when even the Theocratic Reactionaries are ignorant of their religion.

Not to mention their history. Or has he not heard of the religious wars from the Reformation and Counter-Reformation up to and including the “Troubles” in Ireland?

  • Please excuse me, I should not have implied that Christian religious wars began with the creation of Protestantism. In fact persecutions and warfare against “heretical” sects of Chirstianity started about when the Christians gained real influence in their states and continued well on past that.

  • Is it just me or does anyone else think that W’s first thought upon hearing Mr. Hayes’ comments will be

“That’s one smart fella. I’ve been trying to get people to realize this for the years now. If anyone wants to know why I’m not gonna do what the Jimbo and his little Iraq Study Group says I oughta do, it’s because it doesn’t say what this guy, Hayes, is a sayin’. Why didn’t they recommend we spread the gospel and the joy a Jesus? Huh? Probably ’cause none a them so-called experts read the bible ’nuff. [insert 5 minute ramble about how W reads the bible everyday and how much love he has for Jesus in his heart] Shoot, Condi, maybe we oughta put this Hayes guy on your staff.”

(ohh my head hurts from just trying to write like W might think).

In all seriousness, does anyone think that W doesn’t agree with Hayes?

Seconded. These idiots don’t know how pissed people get, hearing the self-righteous “All ye sinners” sermons from these guys… I know way too many moderate Hindus, and have even one Catholic Christian friend, who supported a ban on religious conversions in India. Thankfully, the stupid ban never passed the Parliament.
It’s sad when even the Theocratic Reactionaries are ignorant of their religion.
    Reminds you of Rep.Westmoreland?

  • The violence in Iraq is being perpetrated, in large part, by people who disagree on who Mohammed’s successor was supposed to be. So Christian missionaries want to swoop in and persuade Iraqis that, no, none of that matters because Jesus is all there is.

Let’s cut out the middle-Messiah and just convert them to secular humanism. That’ll work, too. Or, if you believe the recent South Park episode featuring Richard Dawkins, it won’t.

  • The GOP has no idea of what Jesus taught.. If they did there would be no war in Iraq, no appeals to bigotry, and no favoritism to the rich and well off, The Republicans are closer to Anti – Christ than to Jesus.

  • So.. In his effort to find a way to turn the corner in Iraq, the poor guy has actually gone round the bend?

  • The extremist Muslims want everyone to convert to their kind of religion. The extremist Christians want everyone to convert to their kind of religion. Extremism should be a certified mental illness.

  • The first light of Christianity is to understand that if Christ were here today the first people he would kick butt on would be the Christian clergy, and the second would be the laity for supporting them without rebuking their selfish behaviors.

Black Water – racist assassins who kill non-whites for a thrill – hired by the U.S. government? Someone tell the U.S. government that racism is contrary to democracy in the U.S. and in the world. Maybe I’m wrong, or maybe I’m not. You tell me.

Just say NO to foreign cars!
