A new ‘red scare’ for a new Congress

As you may have heard, Democrats officially took the reins of both houses of Congress today. It’s a proud moment that many of us have been waiting for, with varying degrees of patience, for quite some time. I’ve heard from many friends in Washington today who are filled with optimism and hope. It’s a new day, a new Congress, and a new opportunity for some real progress after too many years of dormancy.

I couldn’t help but be curious, though, about how our friends on the right are receiving the news. I expected plenty of bitterness, but I was surprised to see so many come up with “Red Scare 2007.”

redstate
Redstate, for example, is one of the preeminent conservative blogs in the country. Needless to say, no one would expect Redstate’s proprietors to be pleased with today’s developments, but the lead graphic on the site, right now, is a sign reading, “Democrat-Socialists Take Back Congress.” There’s a hammer and sickle in the middle, and the background image is of the evacuation of the U.S. embassy of Saigon.

Remember, Redstate isn’t even close to being the most inflammatory conservative site online; it’s generally considered a “mainstream” right-wing blog, popular with the Republican establishment.

And when it came to the red-scare talking point of the day, Redstate wasn’t alone.

Here’s another standout post from a prominent far-right blog, explaining that “the notoriously anti-American Dhimmicrats have taken over Congress.” Citing Democrats’ role in Vietnam, the blog explained:

Remember the millions of innocent people that were brutally murdered as a result of the Dhimmicrats’ betrayal? All of those innocents were murdered by the Democrat Party.

And now, just as we’re involved in another war that they desperately want us to lose, they’re back in power. That is bad news for us, and it is seriously bad news for millions of Iraqis. Deja vu all over again.

And that is why this world will never be a better place until every last socialist on the surface of it has been exterminated. Just as any other disease, they need to be purged from the body of mankind. Because if they’re not, they’ll keep popping back up, and every time the Socialist death toll will rise.

Even Coulter got in on the fun.

The passing of Gerald Ford should remind Americans that Democrats are always lying in wait, ready to force a humiliating defeat on America…. Democrats turned their backs on South Vietnam, betrayed an ally and trashed America’s word.

I assume it’s a coincidence that so many conservatives are talking about Vietnam today, and equating Democrats with socialism, but it’s rather startling, isn’t it?

Just to be clear, I’m not violating Drum’s law — these are actual items from well-read conservatives, not their commenters. I’m also not saying that these are wholly representative of all right-wing voices today.

So, why am I mentioning this? Because I think it’s worth noting, on occasion, a) just how nutty some of our friendly rivals on the right really are; b) just how much they hate us.

Plus, I think it’s kind of funny how, just last fall, Peggy Noonan lambasted the left because, she insisted, we lack “an element of grace — of civic grace, democratic grace, the kind that assumes disagreements are part of the fabric, but we can make the fabric hold together.”

Well, if Boy George II would, just for a moment, consider the possibility that his war is a failure, he’d realize that he’d better be ready for more than 500 Iraqi refugees. But that’s all he’s going to allow.

So just how, Bitch Coulter, are the Democrats going to be the ones who betray “our” allies, and just who do you imagine to be “our” allies in Iraq, the ones who kill us all of the time or the ones who kill us some of the time?

  • So who is going to have balls enough to post a page with a swastika background, linking Republican’ts with their Nazi-like propaganda & power grabs?
You know, I don’t think that they would particularly like that, actually, they would scream like the stuck pigs that they are.
    Bur IOKIYAR.

  • Every time the Socialist death toll will rise??????

Have they noticed how many Iraqis we have killed in the last 44 months? And how many more Muslims (especially Iranians) they propose killing in their other posts? Why do readers take these idiots seriously?

  • The far right blogosphere is not reflective of conservative thought. It is indicative of fanaticism. To juxtrapose the imagery of the Soviet Union is dispicable. Fantasy writers can’t even begin to compete with the record of thought and idea these far right bloggers wish to conjure. Why do these rabid, fanatical bloggers hate so many established American mores like say the 1st Amendment of our beloved Constitution? Answer: These bloggers and other misc. ne’erdowells are haters of our democratic heritage, and have tendencies that are authoritarian in nature. God bless their fascist regime!

The sponsors of Redstate need to go back to school to learn some respect for our amazing political system we call a representive democracy where a majority of the electorate holds ultimate sovereignty. By projecting such images as the sickle and hammer for this new 110th Congress, they are by implication suggesting the majority of voters in America this time around (2006 elections) are also pinko-fags. The inability to discern the full meaning and impication of their rantings, these far right voices are sullying our bodypolitik, and doing a great disservice to all Americans. -Kevo

  • Wasn’t Cheney and Rumsfeld in charge when we pulled out of Vietnam? It was clear the war was lost when Nixon promised a secret plan to win the war, then escalated it until that loser of an albatross got hung around the GOP’s neck.

Let that be a warning to future President Wesley Clark. Let’s get out before it becomes a Democratic debacle. Then again, we could stay, until the GOP all call for a withdrawl, and blame the loss on the defeatist Republicans. We could have won if we bombed Hanoi… er, Fallujah another two weeks! It was because the GOP kept us from going across the border into Cambo… Syria!

  • I like it.
It’s not like we stormed the gates, literally, the voting public put us there. The majority of United States Citizen’s want Dems running the show.

Or as the right was so fond of touting 2 years ago, god has spoken. So shut the F up and let us get to the business as hand.

  • That Redstate graphic has a certain Captain Ahab rage vibe about it. We should remember that our friends from the other side see us as the problem and they will do what they need to in order to shove whatever harpoon they find into our sides. These are people with whom we will never be able to compromise.

  • Sorry, last sentence should begin with With the inability . . .
Got distracted before I proof read. -Kevo

  • Wow that’s insane. Nothing like a little adversity to make them show their true colors again. They are so fucking afraid of the world. So afraid.

Kinda makes me rethink some of my own rhetoric though. 🙂

  • I assume it’s a coincidence that so many conservatives are talking about Vietnam today

There are no coincidences within the RW echo chamber…..

but I guess this is to be expected when you have a majority of a political party that subscribes to a doctrine of small minded group think ….

It actually hilarious to see the RW trying to tar Democrats by comparing the current situation in Iraq to Vietnam

This is coming from the same political party that hemmed and hawwed about Iraq not having any similarities to Vietnam as little as 3 months ago…….

  • Ankle Biting Pundits (where the most vile post you cite originates) really is one of the most hateful sites I’ve ever seen. Seriously … they almost make the folks at Little Green Nutjobs seem sane.

    Almost …

  • Whoops … I think that was Antiidoltwhateverthehellitis Rottweiller, not ABP. My fault. (It’s blocked here, and Daou isn’t showing up in my browser, so someone let me know if I’m wrong).

Oh, and anyone who thinks I let lose to some nastiness on my site (which I do, of course) should really see some of these to put things into perspective. Most of my “hatefullness” is just raunchy snark, and even then it only shows up in a very small percentage of my stuff.

  • Let’s hope Pelosi does her job well and makes the Congress pass some much needed legislation and initiates oversight.

The level of rage shown in these quotes indicates a very high blood pressure level. I expect Republicans to start choking and dropping.

  • The radical-right, the conservatives, the wingnuts have been deeply frustrated with the fall of Communism as “the” enemy. I’m always amused by their “co”, “co”, “com” stuttering before they resort to some other name. And they’re great name callers, reminding me of the two married drunks that lived next door to me when I was a kid. “You bitch!” “You bastard!” was the extent of their discourse and logic. It was a great way to avoid issues and maybe the shame of their behavior, kinda like Ann & company.

  • Strange, I thought the Rightish Radicals (Radishes?) said it was an act of gross treason to compare Iraq to Vietnam.

D’oh! I’m expecting them to be logical again. Never mind.

  • The far right blogosphere is not reflective of conservative thought. It is indicative of fanaticism.

I’d really like to believe this. Unfortunately, the preponderance of the evidence suggests that “conservative thought” and “[right-wing] fanaticism” overlap to a greater degree today than ever before.

Put simply, these people are unhinged. They draw from an evidently bottomless well of hate, and like all closed circles they push each other further and further along: it’s an unending contest to see who can be the most outrageous, the most extreme, the most blood-red Republican. It’s sports-team loyalty on life-and-death issues.

The only satisfaction I can take from it is that the more extreme they get, the farther they get from the middle. Right now–and this could change if there’s another terror attack, a calamitous economic disaster, or maybe even a big scandal originating with Democrats–the large majority of the public doesn’t see the world as the right-wing nuts do. Thank goodness for that.

What the Democrats must do over the next two years is govern as grown-ups. With a disgraced and deeply unpopular lame-duck president, they have a golden opportunity to cement their tentative status as the party of the mainstream. If they do that, all the right-wing freaks can just move to Albania.

    Or Iraq.

  • I know it’s off-topic, but

… to future President Wesley Clark.

I really like the sound of that. 🙂

  • These people are unhinged. “And that is why this world will never be a better place until every last socialist on the surface of it has been exterminated.” This nutjob calls for the extermination of anyone who does not agree with him (“the Socialists”)?

They are sputtering with impotent rage because a majority of Americans decided to vote for the Democrats. They really do hate our political system. They are authoritarians, not conservative.

  • With so much fight in their bellies, you’d thing the wingnut o’sphere would be tripping over themselves to get in on some real action in Iraq … but it’s just so much more for them fun to blog hatefully about needing to assasinate Dem members of Congress and then play violent videogames in their parent’s basement.

Why is it every time right wingers have a problem their only solution is to kill someone else?

  • Purely hypothetical question:

Say you live in Florida or one of those other states with the “Stand your ground” laws. (You can shoot an attacker or a person you perceive as a serious threat.)

And say you are a Democrat.

And say you are in a bar and the blowhard next to you starts spouting crap about how Democrats must be exterminated.

    Can you shoot him?

  • Can you shoot him?

I’m not a lawyer, but i’m guessing he’d have to have some sort of weapon before you could shoot him.

  • I wish like hell that people as socialist as FDR had taken over the congress. I doubt that they will turn out to be as socialist as Nixon.
People firmly entrenched in reality never dream in color.

  • Wait a second — let me get this straight:

A bunch of people at “Red State” and others who support the Republian party (whose color is red), are going on about a “red” scare?

    Um …

  • I have developed a standard response when a wingnut calls me a socialist or a commie. I them a Nazi. I don’t yell, shout, or wag my finger. I just calmly and cheerfully call them a Nazi. A few see the connection right away. But, most are outraged, if not furious. I smile until they calm down and patiently explain that if they get to call me a commie, I get to call them a Nazi. One of 2 things happen. They storm off in a huff, or they stop calling me a commie. I’m fine with either.

  • If he’s spouting crap about killing Democrats, then he’s spouting crap about killing Americans. That makes him a Terrah-ist. And the Dear Leader Party says that it is our Patriotic Duty as Red-Blooded ‘Muricans to kill as many Terrah-ists as is humanly possible. Maybe more, even. So when Coulter goes off about killing Supremes, and that other hacked-up hairball screams about the need to kill U.S. Senators—don’t “they” fit their own definition of “Terrah-ist?”

Why, since all we’re doing is discussing “”what to do with idiots,” we might even relabel the infamous IED:

    Idiot Eradication Device.

Although, my son’s been studying dinosaurs—and his new “funword” is “extinction” (he’s going on nine now, y’know. He claims that the rainy Christmas we has was “snow extinction”).

And as for the RS graphic, let’s borrow the old Nazi emblem of an eagle perched in a wreath with a swastika in the middle. Replace the eagle with a chicken, and transpose the whole thing so the wreath site between a “G” and a “P.” It works with the letters “F” and “X” just as good. Or Put up an image of the Nazi surrender in May of ’45—or scenes from the Nuremburg trials. Hell’s bells, compare these fanatics to the guys who bombed and strafed Pearl Harbor, or to the masters of the Bata’an Death March.

Bring this thing up to ramming speed, and when they try to turn aside by screaming how mean we are—turn hard at ’em. Again .Again. And again….

  • It must be like meat and drink to the real enemies of America, whoever they may be; to see the group that still holds most of the cash (meaning the GOP and its wealthy business friends) screaming with hate and vowing never to cooperate. Osama bin Laden and his ilk never had a better friend than George W. Bush and the Republican party.

  • “Osama bin Laden and his ilk never had a better friend than George W. Bush and the Republican party” – Mark

    Truer words were never spoken.

And yes I think Ann “the Bitch” Coulter and this guy are effectively terrorists. Someday we’ll have a government that punishes this sort.

  • JoeW,

…explain that if they get to call me a commie, I get to call them a Nazi.

Wouldn’t the term “fascist” be more appropriate? unless they are calling you a Lenninst or Stalinist, I suppose…

  • John Edwards knows a lot about poverty, after all, he’s helped throw a lot of people into it with:

    – his co-sponsorship of H-1b visas,

    – his support for illegal aliens,

    – his vote for MFN-China

but what about stuff like iraq war and the patriot act?

well, he voted for them too,

About the only thing you can say for Edwards is, he spent so much time running for president that he didnt have time to do more damage as senator.

You’ve got to ask yourself – ‘what did he do, with the power he had, when he had it?

  • Do these people’s mothers know what they’re doing down in the basement with those computers?

Are any of them old enough to shave regularly?

  • Instapunk finally gets it right for once:

They said nice things about Reagan after he died, too, despite hating him in office, and they’re already gearing up to do the same thing with George H.W. Bush, who was treated quite unfairly during his term. (See, e.g., the supermarket scanner story). It’s as if the only good Republican President is a dead Republican President.

Well of course!! McKelvey’s Law: “The only ‘good Republicans’ are pushing up daisies.”

  • Wouldn’t the term “fascist” be more appropriate? unless they are calling you a Lenninst or Stalinist, I suppose… Edo, @29

Not necessarily. Strictly speaking, “fascists” are members of the Mussolini’s (Italian) party, “Nazis” were members of Hitler’s party (The National Socialist German Workers’ Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP). Communists were members of diffrent communist parties allover the world.

So, if someone calls you a communist, either “fascist” or Nazi is an appropriately offensive response. The equivalent of “Stalinist” would, probably, be “Hitlerite”

  • Kevo (#5): The sponsors of Redstate need to go back to school to learn some respect for our amazing political system we call a representive democracy where a majority of the electorate holds ultimate sovereignty.

Actiually, the sponsors of Redstate all need to go to school – they were all homeschooled by mommy, which is why none of them have the ability to do more than plagiarize (remember Ben Domenech?)

  • The poster boys for the failure of homeschooling at RedState say:

Many of us will turn our attention to 2008. But at RedState, we intend to fight. We will fight against government largesse, we will fight against Democrats intent on doing to Iraq what they did to Vietnam, and we will fight our own if our own choose to ignore the obvious lessons of 2006.

    Circular fiting squad, ah-tennnn-hut!

    Porrrrrt – harms!

    Riiiight – face!

    Right shoulder – arms!

    Forrrrrward – march!!

    Hut – hut – hut—-

Hey! Where did this cliff come from?

    (Mr. Bill voice) Ohhhhhhhhhhhh Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!

    LOUD THUNK (off-screen)

  • libra,

Strictly speaking, “fascists” are members of the Mussolini’s (Italian) party,

thanks for prompting me to look more deeply into this. Wikipedia has a pretty good entry on it. Apparently Mussolini is credited with the first use of the term, but it has since morphed into a more generic term, as you correctly state. Thus, next time someone states that the Democratic Party is a buch of socialists or communists, I fully intend on responding “and you’re a bunch of fascists”.

  • The scariest thing of all is that the Democratic Party, taking in its full spectrum, is as far to the right as it’s been in my lifetime.

  • They need to wake up and smell the new millineum for pity’s sake. Communism is dead – even in Cuba and China.

  • Do these people’s mothers know what they’re doing down in the basement with those computers?

Are any of them old enough to shave regularly?

    Only their palms, I’m afraid.

  • Gotta love Red State:

“To the Democrats, we bid you welcome to the majority. And here at RedState, we fight on against you and your socialist cohorts. Oh, and now that you’ve got one branch of government, we dare you to try to use it without consulting the GOP.”

The same GOP that just got lost control of the Congress? You mean that GOP?

Yeah, that’s who I want to take advice from, the losers.

  • Sanchez, you’re not helping. That kind of foaming diatribe is exactly what meakes Redstate and little green snotballs look so childish, and what will drive the people who are not total idiots away from their sites. We don’t need that here, in reverse.

    Really.

  • I expected plenty of bitterness, but I was surprised to see so many come up with “Red Scare 2007.”

It justifies being afraid over here, so they don’t have to be afraid over there.

    Comment by Lance — 1/4/2007 @ 6:37 pm

On the contrary, I support the right of people to write, speak and support such filth. The challenge is create an environment where such speech is viewed as empty rhetoric at best, or simply nonsense. Like the hairy guy with the sandwich board proclaiming “THE APOCALYPSE IS NIGH!” they become part of the landscape, rather than a prominent feature of it.

Now the yutz quacking in his microhphone about assassinating members of Congress for supporting any sort of immigration reform – THAT is clearly over the line. But as we have witnessed in multiple instances over the last six years, IOKIYAR.

    Mile to go before I sleep . . .

I shall watch my words in the Future, Racer X
    However…
I Shall NOT calm my URGENCY!!!

  • I’ve often thought that Clinton missed a real opportunity to come down on the wing-nut right like a ton of bricks after the Oklahoma City bombing — martial law, internment camps, the whole ball of wax.

Of course, the Army wouldn’t have backed him then. But after eight years of neocon rule, maybe that won’t be the case the next time a Democrat gets into the White House. Certainly, the emergency powers Bush has claimed should be sufficient to deal with what is, in effect, a domestic terrorist movement in the making. Alas, what liberal politician has the balls for it? Not even Hillary, I’m afraid.

What we really need is a left-wing Pinochet.
