Tuesday’s Mini-Report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* Guess which annual blog awards are now accepting nominations?

* A whole lot of people spent a whole lot of time trying to track down a picture of George W. Bush and Jack Abramoff together. One finally came out. As CREW put it, “The White House did not want anyone to see this photo. So, that begs the question: What else are they hiding?”

* Remember some of those far-right judicial nominations that have been driving me batty for the last couple of years? Many of them withdrew from consideration today. (thanks to Curmudgeon for the tip)

* Jobs created in the first six years of Reagan’s presidency: 9.5 million. Jobs created in the first six years of Clinton’s presidency: 17.6 million. Jobs created in the first six years of Bush’s presidency: 3.7 million.

* Bush may support a troop escalation in Iraq, but don’t expect Tony Blair to go along with a “surge” in British troops.

* I’m pleased to report that Sen. Tim Johnson’s (D-S.D.) condition has been upgraded from “critical” to “fair,” nearly four weeks after he suffered a brain hemorrhage and underwent surgery, his press secretary said today.

* I regret that I’ve fallen terribly behind in covering Joe Klein’s latest controversy. Here’s a summary: Klein, for Time’s new “Swampland” blog, wrote his very first blog post. It was dumb. So Klein wrote another. It was dumb, too. Let’s just say Klein’s blogging career is off to a shaky start.

* I also regret that I haven’t had the chance to review Schwarzenegger’s statewide healthcare policy in any real detail, though I’m delighted to have a Republican governor of the nation’s largest state endorsing the principle of universal coverage. As for the plan’s merit, Kevin and Ezra have a few thoughts.

* In case you get the email that’s going around comparing a blizzard in North Dakota to Hurricane Katrina, please know that it’s total nonsense.

* I think reporters on the Hill were a little too interested in People magazine running a picture of Barack Obama without his shirt on. The WaPo’s Dana Milbank compared him to “Burt Lancaster in ‘From Here to Eternity.'”

* The iPhone is pretty cool looking.

* And in the day’s most disturbing report, Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera called MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann “a coward — specifically a ‘[female part of the anatomy] who wouldn’t walk across the street against the red light.’ He then said he was ready to fight him, saying: ‘I would make a pizza out of him.'” The guy’s clearly got issues.

If none of these particular items are of interest, consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

I like the iPhone and Geraldo Rivera too.

  • Jobs created in the first six years of Clinton’s presidency: 17.6 million. Jobs created in the first six years of Bush’s presidency: 3.7 million.

clearly its all Clinton’s fault. How dare he be so successful and create all those extra jobs and thus deprive Bush. /sarcasm

  • I humbly accept my Koufax nomination for “Best Commenter” for all my posts on The Carpetbagger Report. And I … um … what? Yes, I agree that both Lance and tAiO are worhty, but … I … wait … wait … waaaiiiitttt!!!!!!

    **dragged off podium**

  • * And in the day’s most disturbing report, Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera called MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann “a coward — specifically a ‘[female part of the anatomy] who wouldn’t walk across the street against the red light.’ He then said he was ready to fight him, saying: ‘I would make a pizza out of him.’” The guy’s clearly got issues.

What is the deal with right-wingers and the obsession with indulgent, violent fantasies? It’s a truly disturbing trend.

  • “Guess which annual blog awards are now accepting nominations?”

I got your back, CB. The comments section in the nomination form didn’t seem to work right off, but doing a preview got it back on track. Good luck!!

  • also why is a man called a female part of the anatomy? is this supposed to be derogatory? we ***** demand an explanation, you part of male anatomy.

  • iPhone? EDGE instead of HSDPA (faster internet), short battery life, no tactile keyboard, and $499/4GB or $599/8GB with a forced two year contract with Cingular? Not to mention it looks like it would shatter or scratch if you thought about it. I think I’ll pass on that AND Geraldo.

  • [Finishes dragging Unholy Moses off stage]

I had to pull this over from the Swampland comments:

“Just because I hate to see the lefties get all the credit, let the record show that at least one moderate Republican finds you despicable.”

Regarding Geraldo, whenever I hear his name I think of two things:
    1. Chair slinging skinheads
    2. That big extravaganza turned dud where he opened some mob boss’ safe and a moth flew out.

So I suggest we shut him up in a safe with some skins. I hope KO ignores him. Clearly Gerry’s trying to boost his ratings with a spot on the Worst Person in the World.

  • But Geraldo, you promised us *years* ago that you wouldn’t rest until you had found the killer of poor little Jon Benet. I’m sure it wasn’t Olbermann, and you didn’t find him in Iraq, so focus, Geraldo, FOCUS.

  • Taio–
Rest assured that, this evening, both you and Lance will be getting my nomination for best commentors, CB for best blog and best writing, and The Poorman for funniest.

I always feel dirty for nominating myself, but I do have one post that I thought was really, really good and spoke to a good deal of people on a number of levels.

Although, even I admit that it’s probably not good enough, after seeing some of the others. That’s okay … 🙂

  • RE: Geraldo’s rant.

So his complaint is that Keith won’t violate the law, perhaps endangering his own and other people’s lives to do it?

If Clinton had crossed a street against a red light the Republicans would have voted another article of impeachment.

  • Goodbye William Haynes – we hardly knew ye (and didn’t really like what little of ye we knew). Don’t let the door hit you on the behind on your way out!

  • Glad to see a few wingnuts are gone on the judicial front. Someone needs to let Bush know that prejudice is not a fancy word for “well qualified for the bench.”

  • Geraldo’s threats are as empty as Al Capone’s vault. He’s a tool.

I have an iPod, and I love it. Taking a couple shots at the Beatles doesn’t inspire me to look into the iPhone. Classless.

  • Since this is an “open thread” can someone explain why the 100 hours have not already lapsed since the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives took over?

  • Unholy Moses,

both you and Lance will be getting my nomination for best commentors

Seems a bit unfair that you are singling them out solely due to the quantity and quality of their comments. I mean…uhh…uhh…I hardly ever slip up on my html tags and have a shorter name–and I was funny. Once. Sheesh, the things one has to do to get notice. 😉

  • Re #8 – I’m sure we all fondly remember Geraldo’s triumph when he opened Al Capone’s ‘secret vault’ which contained only rubble, one old bottle and a discarded street sign.

Yes, I watched that ill-fated little production, I do confess. At least I have the satisfaction of knowing that it wasn’t my idea to do it on live TV without even checking that there was something good in there first. Geraldo gets all the credit for that, the little schweinhund.

  • can someone explain why the 100 hours have not already lapsed since the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives took over?

‘Cause they haven’t been in session for 100 hours. Not surprisingly, the Dem leadership gets to decide how the first 100 hours are measured, not you. Futhermore, IIRC, it’s roughly analogous with how Newt and crew measured their progressive on their Contract with America.

  • Edo:

The President doesn’t get to decide which 100 days “count” after January 20th. 100 hours after 12 noon January 4, 2007 already passed at 5:00 p.m January 8, 2007. Maybe Speaker Pelosi should have asked for 110 hours?

  • If you want to understand Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “universal” health care plan, think “Medicare Part D on steroids.”

    1. The requirement for businesses to spend 4% of their income on health insurance or pay it into a state fund is a great way for businesses to save lots of money on healt care, since that is about one-third what they spend now. So they drop their health plan, pay into the state fund, and they make money in the bargain. Hell, even Safeway President Steven Burd was quoted as saying this requirement is far too small!

    2. Families making more than $40,000/year get no state break for this mandatory insurance, which will cost about $2,000/year (with a $10,000 deductible). Where does anyone making that little in California come up with the extra two grand? And what kind of “health insurance” does that buy???

    3. Health insurance companies are not regulated as to what they charge – unlike home insurers or car insurers in California – and there is no cap on what they can charge, with the only “liberal” part being that they can’t turn anyone down (but how much to they make them pay?).

This is typical Republican bullshit. Rather than put bandaids on the private insurance system and bail out the private insurers, what would really work would be Single-Payer Insurance.

There is not one goddamned thing that is anything more than smoke and mirrors about this alleged “plan,” and for Kevin and Ezra not to “get it” right off (hell, all I had to do was read the LA Times article) does not speak well of their political intelligence.

  • Jerry Rivers (his real name before he invented the one he uses nowadays) knows all about being a p***y, since that’s what he’s been for the past 30 years.

America’s most overrated halfwit. He even beats out America’s Dumbest Mick, O’Reilly.

  • Also, I take it that yesterday (Monday January 8, 2007) doesn’t count in the 100 hours because the GOP asked for it off? And, oral sex still isn’t “sex” right? Here is the schedule for this week:

    Tuesday – JANUARY 9, 2007
The House meets at 10:30 a.m.
    ——————————————————————————–
    Wednesday – JANUARY 10, 2007
The House meets at 10:00 a.m.
    ——————————————————————————–
    Thursday – JANUARY 11, 2007
    The House meets at Noon.
    ——————————————————————————–
    Friday – JANUARY 12, 2007
The House meets at 10:00 a.m.

These are still better than banker’s hours AND they get Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday off next week (is that the GOP’s fault too?). Someone wake me when they decide 100 = 100.

  • Thomas:

You have us all confused with people who care what morons say. You’ll notice I specifically said “say” and not “think,” since the latter activity is something you are obviously not equipped to perform.

  • In your “reality-based” world, adding 100 hours to 12 noon January 4th does not involve “thinking”? Is that what you call “fucking” instead?

  • Presidents Day is February 19th this year. I see Pelosi is taking that holiday off as well. Will the 100 hours be up by then at least?

  • Geraldo’s moustache is talking to him again, that’s why he’s ranting.

And Thomas, we asked for arguments, not abuse. Did we walk in the wrong room?

  • Thomas, do you honestly expect that Nancy Pelosi would require the House to sit in session for longer than humans can physically endure? It sounds by your snarky comments that no matter what she did she wouldn’t win with you. Until you’re honestly willing to give a person a fair shake, kindly piss off. When their 100 hours are complete, then feel free to come back here and complain about how belligerently they forced through their left-wing, San Francisco values agenda without any consideration from the oh-so-moderate, bipartisan-loving minority. On second thought, don’t.

  • They just called it 100 hours to keep halfwits glued to their clocks and safely out of harm’s way.

  • Thomas,

The President doesn’t get to decide which 100 days “count” after January 20th.

and how is this relevant? If I told my boss that in my first 100 hours on the job I would present a compelling business case, she would not expect to see it less than 5 days later. Your insistence that the Dem leadership cater to your whims is a bit pathetic. And to state “And, oral sex still isn’t “sex” right?” when you also state that W didn’t lie us in to the war with Iraq is quite telling.

  • Thomas would rather Congress go back to the Republicans’ two day workweek.

Don’t worry, Thomas, when your mom gets home she’ll bring you more cheetos. Don’t come out of the basement, the daylight will hurt your beady eyes.

  • You bet I wish we would return to REPUBLICAN 2 day work weeks. But now that the DEMOCRATS are in charge, I just want to make sure someone is keeping track (being the “dimwit” that I am). If it didn;t start until today (forgetting she was sworn in last Thursday), the House came to order at 10:30 a.m., the Speaker designated the Honorable Ruben Hinojosa to act as Speaker pro tempore for the day, and took a recess at 10:40 a.m. until 12:00 noon. That’s at least 10 minutes, right?

  • After lunch, they really kicked it into high gear (is anyone watching C-SPAN? Are they still in session?):

  • Just by way of comparison, Thomas, why don’t you enlighten us with what the GOP did with the first ten minutes of their House majority in 1995? I think it’s only fair if you think GOP workweeks are preferable than what you apparantly think is Pelosi’s tyrannical, hubristic, and indulgently wasteful reign.

  • UPDATE:

    7:09 P.M. –
On passage Roll Call 15 – Recorded vote pending.
On motion to recommit with instructions Failed by recorded vote: (Roll No. 14).

  • Oh, sorry, I see that JoeW called me a “halfwit” — not sure if that is better or worse than a “dumbwit”.

  • I didn’t call you a halfwit, Thomas. But if you want the title, it’s yours. You’ve earned it.

  • I’m afraid that, under the tender ministrations of nincompoops such as Thomas and others, The Carpetbagger Report may become typical of other political blogs, blogs which I no longer look at: A lot of time slogging through Thomas-generated shit in order to find what used to be gems of reason and writing in response to CB’s proffered topics.

Thomas has nothing constructive to offer. “Is too, is not” is sandbox, not discussion. Ignore him or prevent him. I don’t care which.

  • “In the live broadcast, Rivera told his photographer to aim the camera at the sand in front of him. Rivera then outlined a map of Iraq, and showed the relative location of Baghdad and his location with the 101st Airborne. He then showed where the 101st would be going next” http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/04/01/sprj.irq.geraldo/

Well, at least KO never attempted to compromise American soldiers and their ability to wage a successful operation.

As for the ND myth, North Dakotans were more than happy to take federal aid after the 1997 Red River Flood, so that “rugged individual” BS my fellow midwesterners like to pass off is just that, BS.

  • Ed:

Posting a minute-by-minute detailing of the first 100 hours under our femail Speaker of the House is “nothing constructive”? As a political scientist, I find it fascinating.

    JoeW:

At 6:51 pm (above), did you not post: “They just called it 100 hours to keep halfwits glued to their clocks and safely out of harm’s way.”?

UPDATE3 at least they cut short the hour of debate for Gerald Ford:

  • re judicial nominations:
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a concession to the Senate’s new Democratic majority, President Bush won’t rename four controversial federal appeals court nominees whose confirmations were blocked last year, Republican officials said Thursday.

Since 3 of them *withdrew* from the process voluntarily and and *only one* was told his nomination wouldn’t be rammed down the Senate’s throat, I don’t see it as much of a “concession” on BS’s part. Disingineously manipulative of NYT to open the article this way.

  • Thomas has nothing constructive to offer. “Is too, is not” is sandbox, not discussion. Ignore him or prevent him. I don’t care which.

    Comment by Ed Stephan

    Yes.

  • Thomo? I was all for tolerating you as a pet troll, but you’ve crossed the line from mildly annoying into spam. If CB bans you, I’ll only be able to applaud his patience and tolerance for letting you go on this long. You would have been banned after your first or second post at a wingnut site.

  • “The White House did not want anyone to see this photo. So, that begs the question: What else are they hiding?”

And why did the White House, back in May, declare the Secret Service visitor logs to the White House to not be open to the public?

Things that make you go “hmm….”

  • Things that make you go “hmm….”

Uh huh. And whatever became of Jeff “The Cannon” Gannon?

The next president had better be careful when opening the closets in the White House or he is likely to be crushed by an avalanche of skeletons.

  • The Tribune-Review follows up on Cheney’s visit to the Rolling Rock Club yesterday.

[Dead-eye Dick] made no public appearances and returned to Washington last night.

The excursion was sponsored by Dan Cook, an investment banker who runs the Dallas office of Goldman Sachs. He had invited Cheney on a hunting trip in 2003 at Rolling Rock.

Also in the hunting party were former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum; Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association; and Tom Hicks, CEO of Dallas-based Hicks Holdings, one of the groups that in December purchased Latrobe Steel Co. Hicks’ group owns baseball’s Texas Rangers and the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League.

The group included Sam Fox, former state finance chairman of the Bush-Cheney campaign; Stephen Friedman, chairman of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board; Fred Eckert, a lobbyist and former U.S. representative from New York; L. Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center and a Tribune-Review columnist; and Dick Scarlett, CEO of United Bancorporation of Wyoming

    Secrecy was the watchword.

It’s good to see that Cheney is getting out more and mixing up it up with everyday sorta folks.

BTW, Ricky Santorum is about to become a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. He will be in charge of a new program-and I kid you not-called the America’s Enemies Program. I wonder if this program will coordinate with Hanitty’s Enemy of State segment.

  • It should be noted, with at least a wee bit of irony, that the first syllable of “mr.” Rivera’s first name is pronounced: “Her.” Not “His”—but “Her.” And the solution to “Her” is to merely brandish a well-folded chair in a menacing fashion. Or comment on the outlandish makeup that’s supposed to pass for a permanent suntan. Or mention the hairstyle that looks like the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez.

One needs also note that “Her” works for “Fox” (A slang term for a female of the human species. Coincidence? I think not) due to losing the last shred of journalistic cojones in Al Capone’s “vault.” Come to think of it, that “quest” might have served as the prototype for the entire “Fox” (there’s one of those those dangling genderisms again) “noose division.”

Bluntly put, “Her” is the journalistic equivalent of a well-used tampon….

  • (Don’t worry, guys; be happy) FINAL UPDATE for 1/9/07:

    9:46 P.M. –
The House adjourned. The next meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on January 10, 2007.
On motion to adjourn Agreed to by voice vote.

Ms. DeGette moved that the House do now adjourn.

    First Day:

    100 hours

    (minus 9:56)
    ___________

90:04 hours left and counting (except by those who want to ban me, of course)

Nonetheless, congrats on passing H.R. 1 (remaining 9/11 Commission recommendations) 299 to 128. I wonder why Democrats Moran and Ortiz didn’t vote? Is THAT question deemed “allowable” in the echo chamber? I note that some have already criticized the speed with which the measure was pushed through, with no amendments allowed (sound familiar — why is it O.K. when the roles are reversed — I believe Steve Benen had more than a couple bytes posted about the GOP doing that kind of thing): “To make it part of a 100-hour show shamefully trivializes an issue of life or death,” Rep. Peter King of New York, the top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, told The Associated Press.

Motion to reconsider H.R. 1 laid on the table — agreed to without objection — after final vote, then it’s off to the Senate where Lieberman will make sure this one doesn’t pass.

    See you all tomorrow!

  • I was embarrassed to realize I didn’t have the faintest idea who Joe Klein is. So I snuck over and read the blog. Now I’m damn proud to not have the faintest idea who Joe Klein is.

  • “The horse will be out of the barn by the time we get there,” Senator Kennedy replied. “The president makes his speech now. We’re going to get the appropriation request probably the end of January, early February.” He said it could take eight more weeks for Congress to act. “By that time, the troops will already be there,” he said. “And then we’ll be asked, are we going to deny the body armor to the young men and women over there?”

In other words, the president will ask us to the prom once he reserves the hotel room.” – Maureen Dowd, “Love Among the Ruins.”

  • Why does Pelosi hate America? She thinks she can warp time? Who made her queen of the clock? In America, 100 hours = 100 hours!!!!! Except maybe in San Fransisco!!!

The DemoncRAT party is a pathetic bunch of losers!!!!

  • For what it’s worth, Pelosi has said from the beginning that the 100 hours are legislative hours, time spent directly on legislation, not debates, not roll calls, not committee meetings, not anything unrelated to legislation itself. CNN is keeping the clock running on those legislative hours and reports on them.

  • Jobs created in the first six years of Reagan’s presidency: 9.5 million. Jobs created in the first six years of Clinton’s presidency: 17.6 million. Jobs created in the first six years of Bush’s presidency: 3.7 million.

Bush supporters seem to be baffled about why most Americans aren’t very impressed with the economy, which is doing well according to most indicators. This is why. Jobs.

  • The CB report has always been a troll-free environment, but now we have a pet troll for a daily dose of sh$#s and giggles.

What I’m saying is please don’t ban Thomas…

  • In response to the jobs created, what kind of jobs has Bush’s economy created. From what I understand they are low skilled low wage as well.
