Thursday’s Mini-Report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* Unhinged activist Bill Donohue has already responded to the John Edwards blogger announcement, and needless to say, he’s not happy. In a press statement, Donohue said Edwards’ “goal is to loot the pockets of the Soros/Hollywood gang, and they — like him — aren’t offended by anti-Catholicism. Indeed, they thrive on it.” Hmm, the “Soros/Hollywood gang.” Might there be a hint of anti-Semitism in there?

* So, what about that Salon report about Amanda and Melissa having been fired? The same reporters followed up today with a key detail: they were fired, but after the “liberal blogosphere exploded,” the campaign reconsidered. It’s a key moment in the history of the medium.

* This afternoon, after jurors were finished hearing testimony from Tim Russert in the Scooter Libby trial, the prosecution rested its case.

* Speaking of which, Mary Matalin made a series of odd and barely coherent comments about the trial today during an interview with Don Imus. It was rather embarrassing.

* Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-Ga.) has “decided to forego treatment for lung cancer that has spread to his liver and will be returning to Georgia to receive hospice care, his office said Wednesday.”

* As it turns out, the paranoids were right: “Records Show Extra Scrutiny of Detainees in ‘04 Protests: When more than a thousand people were swept up in mass arrests during the 2004 Republican National Convention, defense lawyers complained in court that the protesters had to wait much longer to see a judge than those accused of far more serious crimes like robbery or assault. Now, newly released city records not only put precise numbers to those claims, but also show the special scrutiny the New York Police Department gave to people arrested in or near the convention protests.”

* From the WaPo: “In the survey of 1,144 doctors nationwide, 8 percent said they had no obligation to present all possible options to patients, and 18 percent said they did not have to tell patients about other doctors who provide care they found objectionable.” To get the best care, secular women doctors were the most reliable.

* Colbert takes on Lieberman as only Colbert can.

* The phony Pelosi/military jet story worked its way into a House floor debate today, with hilarious consequences. Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.) made Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) look even sillier than usual.

* Whether you like Hillary Clinton or not, it’s hard not to like the way in which the campaign hits back hard. The Wall Street Journal ran a predictable far-right editorial today against the senator, and within a couple of hours, the Clinton campaign had completely torn it apart. Good for them.

* Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) still wants to know if the Bush administration believes it has the authority to attack Iran without congressional approval. Condoleezza Rice keeps promising to state the administration’s position, but still hasn’t explained it to the senator’s satisfaction.

* Balloon Juice’s Tim F. has a fascinating post about international perceptions of the health care system in the U.S.: “Surprisingly, many people still don’t know that America is the only country in the developed world without universal government-supported healthcare.”

* Liberal Oasis’ Bill Scher has a fascinating post of his own on “conservative correctness.” Bill explained, conservative correctness — as seen in the War on Christmas, for example — is when “you say something impolitic about the president, the war, interpretation of scripture, etc. an attempt is made to shame the speaker, pressure associates and stifle debate.” So true.

* And, finally, Al Gore is poised to announce a series of concerts, which will be “bigger than Live Aid,” to raise awareness on the issue of global warming. The plan is to have seven concerts on 7/7/07.

If none of these particular items are of interest, consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

Sometimes, when you have nothing meaningful to say, it’s best to say nothing. Advice that ought to be taken more often on the Beltway.

But sometimes when you go to the keyboard with a blank mind, insights will spontaneously occur to you. Ann Nicole’s death is one of those times.

  • Mmm, this bernaise sauce is savory, with just a hint of anti-Semitism.

Nope, not a hint. Donohue is a flat out bigot, and not afraid to show it. Of course, he speaks for all Catholics, at least until more moderate one’s step up and denounce him.

If only he’d give them the perfect opportunity.

  • I saw Donohue scare the shit out of SC in an interview on the Colbert Report. What I saw in the interview is an unbalanced thug willing to beat the shit out of anyone who won’t listen to his demands. But then again, he is cut from the same cloth as Mel “Sugar Tits” Gibson.

It’s nice to see a right of centre blog take a good long look at single payer healthcare especially as Taiwan is not exactly socialism central.

Both the McHenry and Matlin items made me laugh. McHenry for being an utter dunce and Matlin because it seems like she’s been upping the perscription on her happy pills. I wonder when she’ll go into rehab?

  • I’m genuinely sorry to hear about Charlie Norwood. It’s a tough way to go, regardless of politics. He seems to be handling it with dignity, though. Good for him.

  • with a key detail: they were fired,

Has this been confirmed by anyone central to the events? Edwards? Melissa? Amanda?

  • What happened to Mary Matlin’s hair? Does she really sleep with Carville? What the hell do they talk about? Just stop and think about how weird that is. He must be a CIA agent or something.

And does anyone out there care about Kosovo any more?

  • Only Barney Frank would get such a hilariously subtle dig at how McHenry has so much more pompousness than one can usually fit in a 5’3″ body.

  • I believe the Edwards bloggers were rehired. Doesn’t say much for Edwards in my estimate, willing to throw employees under the bus because of right-wing propaganda. Too bad, I kinda liked him.

  • Via Dem Now!, Lt. Watada’s court martial has been declared a mistrial.

First officer to refuse illegal orders to deploy in illegal invasion and perform illegal activities in violation of Geneva conventions to be retried next month.

His lawyer says that the case is dead in the water, because the judge’s declaration of mistrial is on insufficient grounds, and now a retrial will mean double-indemnity.

    This might be GREAT news.

  • “Too bad, I kinda liked him.”

If you lose candidates you support over trivial issues and litmus tests, then you deserve the ‘too bad’, not Sen. Edwards.

Oh, btw, he was elected Vice-president in 2004, not unindicted criminal/warcriminal (traitor) Dick Cheney.

They stole the count, as is clear from any sufficient review of the Ohio evidence.

  • Maybe I’m just too into conspiracy, but Shakespeare’s Sister blog had a post called “Not Fired” which just listed the 3 statements about the Edwards controversy. When I went back a little later the name of the post had been changed to “Briefly…”

Was “Not Fired” found to be suggesting that they were never fired when actually they were. Politics just pollutes everything. I hated seeing Amanda and Shakes putting out those feeble disclaimers just like a politician. Just kinda depressing.

  • Sorry Paul. Edwards cracked under an itty-bitty rightie assault. Think what he’d do in the campaign when they “swift boat” him (and they will – whoever runs). Nope, I want nothing to do with anyone who is going to be the slightest bit squishy with these fascist futhermuckers. I want someone who will walk up to whichever one of the little pissants opens their mouth and will kick them hard between the legs, then smash their face into the concrete when they go down. Edwards is a “squish.” I had enough of that in 2004 with Kerry.

  • I wonder how many times Bill Donohue had sex with his priests as a kid – he’s the abused child who swears not only that it never happened but that the people who did it were good.

He’s sort of the perfect example of why people can’t stand his church. One duuuuuuuumb Mick.

  • Bill Donohue is being exposed by bloggers for the anti-semite bigot that he is.

As for Matalin, we know she has a poisonous personality. That is why I do not trust James Carville. He is married to a venomous right-winger. He is a GOP plant in the Democratic environment.

  • From the WaPo: “In the survey of 1,144 doctors nationwide, 8 percent said they had no obligation to present all possible options to patients, and 18 percent said they did not have to tell patients about other doctors who provide care they found objectionable.” To get the best care, secular women doctors were the most reliable.

I’m kind of surprised nobody’s commented on this yet, considering it’s tied in to the “pharmacists not filling prescriptions” and the “moslem taxi drivers not taking passengers with alcohol and/or dogs” brouhahas. It doesn’t affect women only, but anyone going to an ER or doctors office.

I had to be admitted to the hospital a few months ago, and I was adamant that I not be taken to the nearest hospital (which happens to be run by the catholic church), but instead to a non-religiously endowed one. I can’t trust that the staffs of religiously endowed hospitals (except maybe the more liberal jewish ones) will give me decent care, due to my HIV status and my being gay. They usually won’t recognize domestic partners (the certificate from Seattle that hubby and I got the day they established them back in 1994–we were on the local news, BTW), nor the Canadian marriage certificate we got in 2003. Why the hell should I trust that I will get the care that I need, or that my husband be able to make medical decisions for me if I am not able to do so.

As it turns out, my doctor is a woman, and secular from what I know of her, and she is affiliated with the non-sectarian hospital I was admitted to. Maybe there’s something to this.

Religion and the workplace do not mix, and a medical facility should be even more aware of this and held to a higher standard, and thus avoid the pitfalls that happen when the twain do mix.

  • How old is Matalin? She looks like a harpy; her face is dried out; her features seem to be badly chiseled in stone. In other words, she looks as scary and nasty as she sounds. The woman has dedicated her life to EVIL — Cheney– yet she has children with her supposedly liberal husband — James Carville. Either Carville is a fool or he is a plant for the GOP. I tend to think it is the latter. Anyway, I hate to think about what kind of children Matalin would bring into the world…

  • “It’s a key moment in the history of the medium.” Mr. CB
That exact thought popped into my head this evening. That whole scenario was a real, “Hey!!!, snap out of it” moment from the blogosphere. A tsunami of ice cold cyberwater right in the kisser.

    Heh, heh.

“Jeezus X, Elizabeth! Where the hell did that come from?”

“I’ve been trying to tell you John, but you just wouldn’t listen. Do you believe me now?”

  • And like Tom, just because Edwards had enough sense of self preservation to wake up in a hurry when he got a whiff of smelling salts, it wasn’t an impressive display of fortitude or understanding of who the enemy is and how undeserving they are of a shred of respect.

Along the same lines, http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/012362.php the flying monkeys attacking Pelosi just completely emphasize how utterly undeserving the residents of Nightmareville are of any rational or civilized response. They’re out there screeching red hot lies. Theocranuts. The love for their lord and their Commander of Thieves has made them crazy(ier).

Imus, “None of you can tell the truth, it’s insane. It’s like a disease you guys have.”

    http://www.rawstory.com/news/2007/A_devastating_condemnation_of_OSP_and_0208.html

Contrary to speculation and some earlier reports, the Department of Defense Inspector General’s office did not exonerate the controversial Office of Special Plans, which has been accused of cooking pre-war intelligence on Iraq, nor was its then chief overseer, former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Douglas Feith, vindicated.

According to a statement released by Armed Services Committee chairman Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) Thursday night to RAW STORY, the IG’s report is a “devastating condemnation of the activities of the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy.” In a separate statement, Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, states that whether the intelligence activities “were authorized or not, it appears that they were not in compliance with the law.”

It is a f’ing disease. And RepubCo is stricken to the core of their being.

    Veritaphobia. Fear of the truth.

    Calumniphilia. Love of lying.

    Moral Dysentery. Ethical runs.

    They’re sick. They suck.

  • “I want someone who will walk up to whichever one of the little pissants opens their mouth and will kick them hard between the legs, then smash their face into the concrete when they go down. Edwards is a “squish.” I had enough of that in 2004 with Kerry.” –Tom Cleaver

Too bad Edwards and Kerry won the election, eh?

You want what Ted Nugent wants, just on the other side.

  • yeah, paul, that’s why kerry is running the country now, huh?

edwards keeps fucking up every time he opens his mouth. his smarmy talk about not supporting gay marriage because of his southern baptist background was bad enough, but to fire two bloggers because they used language that might offend some people was even worse. it’s doubtful he’ll be able to convince me to support him now……

  • Sorry, Paul, you’re just deluding yourself. You can rail all day against the invisible machine of voter fraud, but it’s not going to change the outcome of the last election nor will it make Edwards a stronger candidate.

  • Tom Cleaver,

I want someone who will walk up to whichever one of the little pissants opens their mouth and will kick them hard between the legs, then smash their face into the concrete when they go down

Agreed. Sadly Webb seems pretty focused on his current job. Maybe Clark will get a little more attention. He sure doesn’t take any guff in his gig at Fox from the wingnuts.

  • doubtful and justbill, I was stating the fact that the election was stolen, as the evidence clearly shows. YOU can keep up with your insults about that fact.

Attacking Edwards on NONSENSE is apparently your job. Carry on.
