Abusing Lincoln

Frank J. Gaffney Jr., president of the far-right Center for Security Policy and a columnist for the conservative Washington Times, wrote a column this week blasting congressional lawmakers who support a non-binding resolution on Bush’s escalation policy. Gaffney’s piece led with this quote:

“Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged.” — President Abraham Lincoln

War supporters pounced. One far-right blogger said, in reference to congressional Democrats, “Lincoln’s prescription for this type of conduct should not be forgotten.” Another conservative, who frequently equates dissent with treason, said Lincoln’s quote “should be on every conservative website as a reminder to America why the Dems are not to be trusted with our national security…. If you oppose the Democrat [sic] plans to surrender Iraq, post this quote someplace.”

Now, my first thought was that use of Lincoln’s quote sounded vaguely threatening in this context. Dems and dozens of Republicans are now “saboteurs” for supporting a non-binding resolution against a misguided war strategy? Which of the three punishments — arrest, exile, or hanging — does the right have in mind?

But as it turns out, Gaffney and his friends have flubbed another one. As Roger Ailes explained, the quote is bogus.

Lincoln didn’t speak or write like a third-rate blogger with his pants around his ankles after watching 24. The quote is entirely fabricated, and it originated in another Moonie rag, Insight. And these morons didn’t even spend the two seconds needed to confirm the quote is bogus.

But the facts don’t really matter to these types. They lied to start the war, they lie to keep the war going and they’ll still be lying after the war is ended.

It’s been that kind of year for conservative blogs, hasn’t it?

Is anyone keeping a list of these conservative mistakes? It’d be an impressive thing to behold.

  • Why are there so many bloggers on the right who mix in the word “pundit” in their names?

Does Instacracker have that much influence, or did these idiots just mis-spell “putz”?

  • Maybe it’s time to do a search and replace with right and wrong.

i.e “right wing” becomes “wrong wing”. “far-right Center for Security Policy” becomes “far-wrong Center for Security Policy” etc.

Keep it up, wrong wingers, your slide into irrelevance continues. And you are absolutely right in your conviction that facts don’t matter. Facts don’t matter… to people who don’t matter.

  • The wingnuts are crazy indeed; sadly it is like a Fox. The next Newsweek CW watch will replay this “Lincoln Condemns Dems” like gospel truth. Glenn Beck will have an 3-night special on it. A month from now, “responsible” MSM outlets will be asking “But did Lincoln really say it? The mystery may never be solved” pieces. And all the while, millions upon millions of American voters will be exposed to the lie, while a mere fraction of that ever hear the truth.

I don’t at all condone abandoning all principles and morals, but in this case it really does work for them.

  • Propaganda is like oxygen to the reichwing.

I’m disgusted that the two bloggers hired by Edwards have felt compelled to quit his campaign. I’m even more disgusted that Edwards didn’t publicly defend them to the hilt.

No religion or any aspect of it is above scrutiny or derision in this country.

  • “Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged.” — President Abraham Lincoln

Is empowering an administration with the ability to continue an illegal war, cut veteran’s benefits, short-sheet a soldier’s leave-time between rotations into the front lines, and unilaterally extending a soldier’s in-theater period considered “damaging to morale and undermining the military?” If it is, then I know a whole lot of ReThugs inside the beltway who are well on their way to the gallows right now. And if I’m not mistaken, the intentional promoting of known lies for personal gain during wartime, whether that gain be financial or otherwise, to the detriment of the People, could be considered both (a) treasonous and (b) a form of inciting insurrection during wartime. Rumor has it that folks can get themselves executed for that. Lynched, even.

So maybe “mister gaff-knee-jerk” and his “pals” over at Moonie.com should issue a correction. After all, it just isn’t my job to “hold back a bunch of hungry-for-a-hanging maniacs….”

  • Is is safe to assume this Roger Ailes is not the Roger Ailes who is the president of FOX News?

  • Whenever a deluded right-wing propagandist makes up something like this, it just reminds me of the time George Washington said that he never trusted Abraham Lincoln and that he’d always watch him with his one good eye.

    Unholy,

Seriously, this has taken Edwards off my radar. He handled this situation poorly.

I would like to make very clear that the campaign did not push me out, nor was my resignation the back-end of some arrangement made last week.

Why do I not entirely believe that?

  • This is like the e-mail an uninformed friend sent me this morning, with the famous picture of the veteran at the 2004 VFW convention wearing the “BS protectors” over his ears – with the caption “what a well-informed veteran wore when Senator Ted Kennedy addressed the Veterans of Foreign Wars.”

He and the rest on the list who got my “reply all” were a bit upset when I gave them 10 sites obtained by 1 minute with Google, explaining that this picture was taken when PRESIDENT BUSH ADDRESSED THE VFW in 2004.

It’s really sad, because this guy is my friend because he’s quite talented and a “leading light” in my hobby. But there they are in WingerWorld, where left is right, up is down, day is night, and right is (unfortunately not) wrong.

  • Folks need to be careful about suggesting hanging for anti-war anyone,/i>. Lying us into three wars; supporting, fanning the flames of three illegal wars, is treason – a hanging offense. When this bunch is haged as the war criminals they are, I will cut my hair.

  • Even were the quote true, this IS NOT a war, declared or otherwise; this is NOT wartime; Shrub is NOT a war president. Bush is no more than an international CRIMINAL.

We illegally invaded a sovereign nation already disarmed by Bush I, a nation which Clinton had held in check through fly-overs and on-site inspection, unleashed unimaginable “shock and awe” on thousands of innocent civilians (4,000 bombs in 4 days), took Baghdad with “only” 139 US deaths, and have done … well, what? … ever since, except spend thousands more lives and hundreds of billions of borrowed dollars.

if nothing else, it’s time the World Court tries the Bush Crime Family for war profiteering.

  • Honest Abe must be rolling over the grave that these jokers are making shit up and attaching his name to it.

  • This is disturbing. We’re used to the radically skewed perspectives, ad hominem attacks, fallacies of reasoning and the cherry picking of facts the right uses to advance their arguments, but to make up crap like the fake Lincoln quote and fling it at opponenents is a pathologocal low for these guys. I hope the internet disproportionately magnifies the number of deluding and self-delusional righties among our numbers as a nation, for I really fear for this nation’s soul.

What’s worse is Gaffney smeared the Republican party’s hero, and a national treasure to boot, in concocting this tawdry little spitball. To answer Joseph Welch’s question to Sen. McCarthy, “At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” No, right wingers do not.

  • Clement L. Vallandigham – Clement L. Vallandigham was a congressman from Ohio and a prominent Copperhead. In 1863 Lincoln banished him from the Union after he was arrested on charges of treason. He later returned to campaign on behalf of McClellan against Lincoln in the 1864 presidential election. (SparkNotes)

Well, at least Abe didn’t hang him.

  • To Reynolds: “There you go again!”

(I never knew what the hell that meant either, but righties seem to think it was brilliant — and it’s great to watch them stammer as if you just stole their icon.)

  • Lying and hypocracy knowsno boundaries to democrats, liberals and extreme environmentalists. People were hung by lincoln and were deported as well
