A light goes on — then off — in New Orleans

The president’s speech last night from Jackson Square had a beautiful backdrop, with the St. Louis Cathedral — well-lit to match Bush’s shirt — on one side, and an Andrew Jackson statue on the other.

At first blush, the White House’s attempts at stagecraft seemed to acknowledge the political realities.

Sensitive to fueling further criticism, the White House said it paid for the electricity and lights used for the speech, limiting the local inconvenience. But Bush emerged onto the square without an audience, speaking directly into the camera from a lectern placed so the [Andrew] Jackson statue would be in the picture.

I was just glad to see New Orleans had the power back on. As it turns out, according to NBC’s Brian Williams, there’s a funny story behind that…

I am duty-bound to report the talk of the New Orleans warehouse district last night: there was rejoicing (well, there would have been without the curfew, but the few people I saw on the streets were excited) when the power came back on for blocks on end. Kevin Tibbles was positively jubilant on the live update edition of Nightly News that we fed to the West Coast. The mini-mart, long ago cleaned out by looters, was nonetheless bathed in light, including the empty, roped-off gas pumps. The motorcade route through the district was partially lit no more than 30 minutes before POTUS drove through.

And yet last night, no more than an hour after the President departed, the lights went out. The entire area was plunged into total darkness again, to audible groans. It’s enough to make some of the folks here who witnessed it… jump to certain conclusions. (emphasis added)

We’re dealing with a White House with no limits and no shame. Would the Bush gang really be so callous as to power-up a community for political stagecraft, only to take the power away from the community as soon as the president is gone? Apparently so.

Even for them, this seems beyond the pale.

It only shows the admin’s contempt for the working man. But instead of looking at this incident why don’t we shine a light on his master stroke: the indefinite suspension of the Bacon-Davis act in the Gulf Coast states. Taking away prevailing wages and letting Halliburtion and others stick it to the workers of the region will really help to eliminate poverty…

  • Much like the food station that was taken down after Bush left, we must conclude that this speech was merely another photo op by the prez.

  • Is there a hope that Brian Williams will report this on National Television tonite, or is this just a blog tidbit?

  • You’ve got to hand it Karl Rove, it was a really nice speech. Plenty of good props, and a pitchman who actually seemed to sympathize with the plight of the American people. It had all the makings of a really good infomercial that could be replayed endlessly on late-night cable tv.
Dr. Joseph Goebbels would have really been proud of it. Maybe he’s
admiring it from his place in Hell right now.

  • I am amused by the irony of the Andrew Jackson prop. Wasn’t it his adminsitation that initiated ‘The Spoils System’ for appointing political cronies to federal offices?

  • Why anybody would doubt that this administration has no limit to the depths of their contempt for working people is beyond me.

  • But surely it was worse when they pretended to set up relief stations in Miss., so that the president could direct local people to them, and then took them away after his photo op?

  • They probably had children on treadmills powering the lights while dangling fresh water in front of them as motivation. They duidn’t want to power down, but when Bush left they took the water and the children simply passed out.

  • So they can reestablish the power supply. So the power generation is available.

So why do they shut it down later ? I mean, WTF ?

  • My mom things she will get back to her house in N.O. before she can get back to the one in Pass Christian, MS. HMMMMMMM

  • Oh, please. The evil schemers in this administration have only just begun to show the depths to which they are willing to descend. Cheney knows he could die anytime without seeing his mission completed, Rove and Delay have indictments on tap, and Katrina and Cindy Sheehan have caused Bushie Boy to realize that he remains the total fuck-up he has always been. Desperation makes people do crazy things. Up to now, it’s been about greed and power. What did Hunter Thompson say about when the going gets tough? Well, we’re gonna have more than three years of increasingly insane stuff as these chicken hawk bond babies try to show how smart and tough they really are. Pull on your boots and put on your slicker–we’re all gonna really get soaked.
