A new Plame Game grand jury

When Patrick Fitzgerald saw the term of his original grand jury expire last month, he was not expected to convene a new one. After all, after indicting Scooter Libby, Fitzgerald said the “substantial bulk” of his work had been “completed.”

And yet, as of today, there’s a new grand jury.

Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said in court filings that the ongoing CIA leak investigation will involve proceedings before a new grand jury, a possible sign he could seek new charges in the case.

In filings obtained by Reuters on Friday, Fitzgerald said “the investigation is continuing” and that “the investigation will involve proceedings before a different grand jury than the grand jury which returned the indictment” against Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

Fitzgerald did not elaborate in the document. For two years he has been investigating the leak of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity. The grand jury that indicted Libby expired after the charges were filed late last month.

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that the “White House must brace itself for the possibility that Mr. Fitzgerald’s probe, far from winding down, may have just gotten a second wind.”

I wonder what Rove & Co. think of this? Just when they thought they’re out of the woods….

“a possible sign he could seek new charges in the case.”

I know it’s only speculation, but it’s phrases like these that renew my enthusiasm. The scandal isn’t on the front page every day any more, but it’s still kickin.

  • The Republican screaming heads will use this as new proof that Fitzgerald’s investigation is a partisan fishing expedition. But Brian’s right. It keeps the scandal in the news, or at least in the visible background of the daily cascade of bad news for the Bushies.

  • Fool me once . . .

Sorry, but two more years of this,
    for another technical indictment?

No thanks. I’ve dropped out of
the Plamegate fan club. On to
    other things.

  • “Sorry, but two more years of this,
    for another technical indictment?”

Why? What kind of indictments are you most used to? Was “Travelgate” more riveting?

Fear not. Abramoff will hold ALL your attention. So will AIPAC.

  • There’s plenty of good stuff out there — finally. We’ve got Abramoff stew on the back burner, occasional low-fat granola bars from the ongoing Fitzgerald probes, a picnic celebrating oil company execs who may well be up for five-year terms in the clink if they lied to Congress (and many think they did).

All this nourishment — if it doesn’t make us stronger, then the left is more anemic than even our most scornful detractors say.

Today I’m biting into a huge hero sandwich called Murtha. You too?

  • Don’t count on the oil company execs lying to Congress gaining any legs as a scandal. They weren’t under oath, remember? On the other hand, who doesn’t hate Big Oil besides the Republicans.

I must admit I was disappointed when Fitzgerald only announced Libby’s indictment. I was hoping for Rove or (dare I dream?) a Cheney indictment. I know it was a start with serious charges, but still …

Here’s hoping the new grand jury hands us something more substantial. If it’s an indictment for Stephen Hadley, I’m going to be crushed.
