A rally for a good cause

I know some readers are in the DC area, so I wanted to help get the word out about a rally scheduled for tomorrow to pressure the White House and Congress to follow through on its Hurricane Katrina commitments.

The goal: to remind the nation’s leaders that the New Orleans diaspora is still out there, and that its members want the levees to be rebuilt so they can return home and reconstruct their lives without fear of another flood.

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., has thrown her support behind the rally and helped the women select the optimum date.

New Orleans has become a forgotten tragedy as, in the words of one White House staffer, Katrina has “fallen off the radar screen in terms of public concern.” This rally is intended to help change that.

Because most of those affected will have trouble traveling to Washington for the event, organizers will need concerned citizens in the DC-area to help bolster the crowd size. The rally will be held in Lafayette Park, across from the White House, at noon tomorrow (EST). Landrieu is scheduled to speak at 1.

  • I can’t attend the rally, I live in Georgia. I have victims of Katrina trying to fit in here in a rural community. So far, my little town has made me proud; we arranged for apartments for about 300 displaced persons and there has been no racial disharmony since my county has always been mixed.

Yet it is pitiful to see these people struggle with lives uprooted from their support systems of friends, family and community. I am dismayed and disheartened that they have been forgotten and I urge us all to make more noise about their plight.

  • If there is any issue the Democrats could use against the Republicans
    in 2006 this is it.
The GOP has heartlessly allowed an entire city to rot away for
purely political reasons it seems. This callous refusal to come to
the aid of a stricken area is unconscionable.
But more than that this gives the Democrats a chance to strip
away Louisiana and Mississippi from the GOP grasp. People across
the Gulf Coast are furious over the refusal of the current administration
to help rebuild a vital part of the United States. These were people
who voted Republican in the last few elections. It wouldn’t take
that much prompting to get them back in the Democratic camp.
The Democrats could run ads accross the country with pictures of
a devestated New Orleans and Mississippi Gulf Coast with the
lines: ” This is what George W. Bush and the GOP allowed to happen
to faithful and patriotic Americans. Do you want to be next?
The Democratic Party is committed to the wellbeing of ALL Americans
not just those who give campaign contributions to the Republican party.”
The Democrats could pledge to raise the money needed for the
rebuilding of the Gulf Coast and could launch an investigation into
why so little has been done to rebuild it.
This is an area where the Republicans are very vulnerable. It could be
the linchpin to other Democratic victories if they craft a sound
    stategy.
    Are the DNC leaders listening?
