A whole lot of flipping going on

A month ago, Michael Scanlon, Tom DeLay’s former press secretary and Jack Abramoff’s business partner, struck a plea deal with federal prosecutors, sending shockwaves of fear throughout the Republican establishment. Shortly thereafter, Adam Kidan, another Abramoff business partner, also came to a plea agreement. A week later, Tony Rudy, whom Abramoff from DeLay’s office, apparently did the same thing.

With all this flipping, it was probably only a matter of time before Abramoff himself sang like a bird.

Jack Abramoff, the Republican lobbyist under criminal investigation, has been discussing with prosecutors a deal that would grant him a reduced sentence in exchange for testimony against former political and business associates, people with detailed knowledge of the case say.

Mr. Abramoff is believed to have extensive knowledge of what prosecutors suspect is a wider pattern of corruption among lawmakers and Congressional staff members. One participant in the case who insisted on anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations described him as a “unique resource.”

That’s putting it mildly. Thomas Mann, a congressional specialist at the Brookings Institution, recently said the controversies surrounding Abramoff’s dealings with GOP lawmakers “has the potential to be the biggest scandal in Congress in over a century” because he’s “never seen anything approaching Abramoff for cynicism and chutzpah in proposing quid pro quos to members of Congress.” Abramoff, in other words, spread his corruption far and wide. If he’s talking freely about every member of Congress with whom he was involved, Abramoff is in a position to end a number of political careers.

For high-priced defense attorneys in DC, the holiday season will be very busy — fielding countless phone calls from dozens of Republican lawmakers who are scared to death of what Abramoff might say.

Pass the popcorn.

This will be a real test of Republican loyalty– will he put the good of the party before his own personal interests?

I can’t see him flipping and talking too openly unless he was about to have the book thrown at him. Let’s hope their case is iron-clad and the potential sentence is frightening.

  • Lets face it, theres every chance that some Democrats will be caught up in this as well…good riddance I say. We could do with that particular stench on the blue side.

I think what make this worse (if it actually could be worse) is that there will be a huge concerted push back from the right wing noise machine.

Defending the indefensible is not something I intend to do, so a warning to any democrats who had too much to do with Abramoff’s money. I will not support or defend you, and I don’t think many others will either.

  • Lets face it, theres every chance that some Democrats will be caught up in this as well…good riddance I say.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment — let the chips fall where they may — but I’m not too worried about Dems being caught up in this mess. As Jon Chait explained very well the other day, Abramoff was entrenched within the GOP establishment, not the Dems’.

  • and remember Abramoff gave all his illicit money

100% (as in the whole enchileda, the full amount) to

    only G.O.P. members!

    End the G.O.P. TYRANNY!

  • I dont know how much you folks have read about this dude, but if he turns (which is likely given the pile of evidence against him), along with Scanlon and the others, there will be some serious blood running in the streets of DC this year, and you know the color of blood, dont you? A stray greedy Dem will surely find his or her way into the mess, but that wont matter much, because the central focus of the dealings is with the team that has the power and the power players, and we all know who those peeps are. In case you missed the NYTimes magazine article from May, entitled, “A Lobbyist in Full”, you should definitely check it out. This guy is a pure scumbag, and has been since his days 20 years ago as a College Republican. This guy has been on the Republican side since he was in college, and despite his astonishing greed, I think there was probably enough money on his side that he wouldnt have needed to take too much from Democrats, since I doubt most of them would be very sympathetic to his cause.

  • That sound you just heard is the entire GOP Congressional body suffering a collective heart attack. If Abramoff has flipped, God only knows how many GOPers are going down.

Who’ll it be, I wonder? I think we can safely put down DeLay (add this to his troubles in Texas and these are more serious), Ney and Burns as prime targets. Then there’s Doolittle, Pombo, etc…the list just goes on and on, not to mention the unelected guys like Ralph Reed and Grover Norquist who are ensnared with Abramoff. Abramoff is in place to end a lot of political careers. Think he’s proud of it?

  • What I mean in regard to democratic involvment in the Abramoff matter is that we should expect some blue on the streets of DC as well as a helluva lot of red. I for one want the chips to land as they will and the loss of a couple of crooked Dems is a small price to pay for the pain thats coming for Delay, Ney et al.

I can’t express the grim satisfaction I feel in regard to watching these slugs turn one by one on each other. Smells like guilt to me.
