Adventures in Fox News polling

As Eric Kleefeld noted, there’s a real gem towards the end of the latest Fox News poll (.pdf).

“Recently Democratic Leader of the Senate Harry Reid said that the war ‘is lost’ in Iraq. Do you feel this was an acceptable thing or an unacceptable thing for Reid to say while U.S. troops are still in the field fighting?”

Given this wording, the results weren’t close — 29% said the comments were acceptable, 65% said unacceptable.

Of course, the phrasing is obviously about as subtle as a sledgehammer. Like all unreliable polls, the question is intended to produce a specific result. (It also removes all context from Reid’s comment, not to mention the fact that the senator’s opinion is “shared by President Bush’s regular military adviser Henry Kissinger and several senior U.S. military officials, as well as a majority of the American people.”)

Indeed, just a few questions prior, poll respondents were asked how they’d describe conditions in Iraq right now. A combined 57% said we’re either losing or have already lost.

But that’s not a talking point Hannity and O’Reilly are anxious to share, which is why the poll included the “while U.S. troops are still in the field fighting” phrase.

It’s how Fox News conducts all of its polling.

In last month’s national FNC poll, respondents were asked questions like these:

* Do you think illegal immigrants from Mexico should be given special treatment and allowed to jump in front of immigrants from other countries that want to come to the United States legally, or not?

* Considering that over the past twelve months the stock market is up, employment has increased and the disposable income of U.S. workers has increased, do you think the news media has generally done a good job or bad job providing accurate news about the nation’s economy?

The month before, Fox News’ poll included these gems:

* Do you think a Congressional investigation into the dismissal of the eight federal prosecutors is a good use of taxpayer money?

* Who do you trust more to decide when U.S. troops should leave Iraq — U.S. military commanders or Members of Congress?

* Do you think the Democratic Party should allow a grassroots organization like Moveon.org to take it over or should it resist this type of takeover?

Pretty soon, someone might get the sense that Fox News is trying to skew its polls to advance some kind of political agenda. Shocking, I know.

Who you trust more to tell the truth– Fox News or the Comedy Channel?

  • Can’t trust anything these guys do or report, especially the polls which are intended to mislead and support their agenda. Why would the question about Reid’s comments even be in the poll.
Good rule of thumb is if it’s from Fox News it’s bent.

  • “For several years, Foxnoise has used a deceptive twisting of factual news to promote the lie of neoconservativism and prevent the re-establishment of Truth in Government. Because of this, do you think that Fox should be allowed to keep their broadcast license?”

I’m going to email this question to Jon Stewart…

  • Next month’s question: Do you agree with the Lord, Our Savior that George W. Bush should be appointed President for life?

  • Gee, Faux put a confusing question at the very end of a long phone poll? Shocked, I am shocked– Oh wait, no I’m not.

Fox – A cabal of fuckers broadcasting to suckers.

  • A few years ago, when I graduated with a Media Communications degree, I was looking for jobs and came across an ad for Fox. A requirement was that the candidate be able to “Foxify” the news. (I swear)

I didn’t apply, but at least I now know what “Foxify” means.

  • Fox ain’t the only one to front-load its polls. I’m on the Zogby list and get polls from them about once a month. Quite often, half of the questions are constructed in such a way, that I’m forced to answer “not sure” or “no opinion”, even though I do have an opinion and am quite sure of it. I also — occasionally — get questionnaires from NRA, Planned Parenthood, Repubs, Dems, etc (in VA, you don’t register your party affiliation, so everyone’s playing the guessing game) and notice the same thing about all of them. They all try to skew your answers and fit them into a pre-molded form.

  • Fox Noise is not carried in Europe, except by satellite because of it’s strong propaganda flavor. It is not considered news by anyone with any intelligence. As far as I am concerned, the ditto heads who watch and listen to Fox wouldn’t face the truth if it hit them in the face. They are what is left of the so-called 28% Bush approval base. They will never change, no matter what happens.
Fox has lost 40% of it’s viewing audience in the last year. Evidently, some people may be waking up. Is it $3.50 a gallon gas? Mounting deaths in Iraq? The truth about VA quality of heath care for returning vets? Jobs disappearing at the rate of 125,000 a month? Foreclosures up 62% from one year ago? Maybe it is the “low inflation” which excludes the exploding costs of food and energy.
Only the mindless, the greedy, and the apathetic continue with Fox Noise, and they contribute little to the general good in any case.
