‘All we need is some attacks on American soil’

Dennis Milligan, the new chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, probably shouldn’t sound quite this excited about the prospect of domestic terrorism.

He said he’s “150 percent” behind Bush on the war in Iraq.

“At the end of the day, I believe fully the president is doing the right thing, and I think all we need is some attacks on American soil like we had on [Sept. 11, 2001], and the naysayers will come around very quickly to appreciate not only the commitment for President Bush, but the sacrifice that has been made by men and women to protect this country,” Milligan said.

Does this make any sense at all? Americans will support Bush’s Iraq policy if we experience another 9/11-style attack?

The president’s critics don’t support the troops’ sacrifices?

I have no idea what Milligan is talking about. Then again, I suspect Milligan doesn’t know what he’s talking about, either.

The guy has not gotten the memo about “fighting them over there, so we don’t have to fight them here,” which is a supplement to the memo that says that no attckes here means Bush IS doing a good job.

I guess he hasn’t figured out that if there were to be an attack here, it would completely tear down the facade of security erected by the Chertoff-types, would make those who haven’t been thinking about it too much wonder exactly why it is we have to be spied on if it can’t stop the terrorists, and would expose the charade that Bush flapping his gums about protecting the nation was – and always has been – nothing but talk.

Something tells me that we won’t be hearing much from this guy for a while.

    Milligan is dreaming if he thinks the GOP will benefit if/when another attack happens. But dream he does, you can almost see those Bush 90% approval ratings, eh Dennis?

    Americans have seen how Republicans respond to terrorism. After 9/11, Bush attacked one of the few leaders in the middle east who wasn’t supporting terrorists.

  • This makes perfect sense. The fact we haven’t had another 9-11 on our soil is proof George Bush’s policies are working.

    …And another 9-11 on our soil would be proof the policies have not gone far enough, and Bush should be given more power.

After six years of GOPers shrieking that the only way we can be safe is if we let the Chimperor toss the Bill of Rights out the window with his feces and if Democrats got even the teensiest amount of power we’d all become slaves of Osama bin Laden, another attack will make the people who did the shrieking look a leeetle bit foolish.

  • Only 150% Why the hell isn’t this guy more patriotic? He should be behind the President at least 1000%. Anything less means he hates America and loves terrorism. Hell, I wouldn’t be suprised if he wished there were more terrorist attacks on American soil!

  • He makes “all we need…” sound as if this is what he is hoping for so he can prove some sort of stupid point. You could have terrorist groups “defeated” all around the globe and there will still be someone who wants to attack the great king’s country. And if that person were successful, tragically successful, it still wouldn’t have a damn thing to do with fighting terrorists. This is the logic of idiots coming out of the mouths of a lynch mob mentality which seems to govern the GOP. Just pathetic.

  • Of course, he’s right. A dramatic attack would arouse the same lizard-brain reactions in lots of people that 9/11 did, and result in more, unthinking support of stupid Bush policies, like the ones Milligan so strongly supports.

    Milligan’s judgment is, arguably, poor, because making policy, inspired solely by fear, results in bad policy. That’s why we should fear “fear itself”, in FDR’s memorable phrase. Because it makes us stupid. Not that Bush needed any help in being stupid. But, with help from Rove’s propaganda campaign, it made the American People and large numbers of their representatives in Congress pretty stupid, as well.

    Obviously, we are now down to the 28 percenters, like Milligan, who actually prefer stupid, and are nostalgic for the fear that made stupid, a majority preference.

  • Dennis Milligan just ascended to the level of Rudolph Hess within the ranks of the Loyal Bushie Browshirt Brigade (aka the Cheney Administration).

    One question, where does Rupaul Giuliani stand on Mr. Milligan’s remarks? After all, Rudy claims to have so much first-hand experience with the events of 9/11. It would help if there were a free press in this country.

  • The lack of an attack since 9/11 proves that Bush’s policies are protecting us, and another attack would prove that we need more of the same.

  • The 28-percenters seem to think that America is safer when it kills people who once knew someone who read about someone who worshiped the same as someone who looked like someone who once thought about harming us, Kill ’em all, that’s the ticket. And when killing causes more people to want to harm us, kill them too. My god. These people should be institutionalized.

  • This is classic up is downism. The shorter Milligan goes: If Bush fails in defending our country, we’ll see just how great he’s been at defending our country.
    But let’s bump this rationale up a notch to see how it plays: If Bush would nuke the entire Middle East, we’d see that he is a man of peace.

    My two choices are:
    Mulligan since his intial “shot” needs a do over.
    Gilligan in honour of another – though far more loveable – bumbling idiot who was completely lost.

  • Yes, Bush’s policies have kept us safe because we know there hasn’t been another terror attack on US soil since 9/11.
    But now that the Dems are in charge of Congress, another terror hit at home would be all their fault and proof that only the Republicans can be trusted to run the country.

  • I would suggest that an enterprising candidate run an ad with Milligan’s statement and McCain’s cheeseball smiley face line about bin Laden during the first repub debate and include a tag line like, “Some people seem to think terrorism is all fun and games.”
