Allen supporters assault law student in Virginia

Jim Webb (D) has the momentum in the polls, the “naughty novel” strategy isn’t working, and Sen. George Allen (R) is struggling to get on track. This won’t help.

A first-year University of Virginia law student shouted a question at U.S. Sen. George Allen Tuesday at the conclusion of a rally at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel.

Allen declined to answer the question about whether he had ever spat at his first wife and the student, Mike Stark, was pushed away from Allen by a former Albemarle County GOP official.

That’s only part of it. Stark, whom many of you may know as the blogger behind Calling All Wingnuts, wasn’t just “pushed away” by a Republican activist; he was quite literally tackled by a series of Allen supporters, some of whom may have been Allen staffers. The video of the incident is already online.

The local news accounts have already mischaracterized what transpired. The NBC affiliate refers to him as a “protestor.” To be sure, Stark isn’t an Allen supporter, and he had a confrontational question for his senator, but the fact remains that he was a constituent at a public campaign event. Stark didn’t interrupt Allen’s remarks, he carried no signs, he was not disruptive — he simply asked a question about sealed records that Allen refuses to open. For that, he was manhandled by Allen-supporting thugs.

Similarly, a local paper said Stark “caused a ruckus.” It’s hard to see how that’s a fair description — the “ruckus” was caused when Allen’s heavies tackled him. The thud Stark made when he hit the floor may have been noticeable, but isn’t the tackler more responsible for that than the guy who was tackled?

Moreover, still other reporters are referring to the incident as a “fight.” Nonsense. When large men push around and eventually tackle a law-abiding constituent, that’s not a “fight,” it’s an “assault.”

A few questions:

* When George Allen said of the Democrats, “Let’s enjoy knocking their soft teeth down their whiny throats,” was this what he meant?

* Were any Allen staffers involved with today’s violence? Will any of them be fired?

* How soon will Allen apologize for the incident?

I suspect Allen supporters will argue that Stark was asking a rude question. Perhaps. But Allen’s a big boy and candidates for public office are confronted with rude questions all the time. It’s part of dealing with constituents, some of whom disagree with you. Candidates and office holders can respond to rude questions, ignore them, laugh them off, whatever suits his or her purposes.

But we can’t have a system whereby a candidates’ supporters and/or aides manhandle those with questions they disapprove of. The media has made this out to be Stark’s fault somehow, when, in fact, Allen should be embarrassed by how this was handled.

Stay tuned. Rumor has it there will be additional updates on this story today and tomorrow.

Well at least it will get the wife spitting allegations into the media……
Probably not….they willl focus on the fact that Stark is a “Kossite Blogger”

  • Do you get the impression that the media in VA (at least the ones covering this story) are a little bit timid, or biased, or both?

  • Unless there’s video of Stark the moments before Stark actually asked the question, this will get spun as they were concerned with Allen’s safety.

What am I talking about. It doesn’t matter if there’s video. It will get discussed as some rogue liberal protestor who has a website that supports al-qaeda attempted to attack Allen and demean Allen’s wife. When Stark became antagonistic and tried to rush Allen, several persons protected Allen from the vicious assault.

Wow, that was cool. I literally just made shit up.

So I know that if I make a face, it will stay that way. If I keep making shit up, do I get stuck in that alternate universe forever??

  • Well, it “is” the last chance for an October Surprise. The typical last-ditch tactic of the brown-shirt GOP finally starts to crawl from the slime.

Tell ya what, folks—what would happen if, the day after Felix isn’t a Senator any more, someone made a blunt comment about “his” soft teeth?

  • And a little further on, Allen smirks at the camera.

Yep, it’s a authoritarian state we are becoming.

  • Man, this is where the stay-the-course, audience-of-the-faithful, shock-and-awe, pre-emptive-strike jackbooted rethuglicans are taking the democratic political process. They’re wrestling it straight to the floor with their burly arms wrapped around its neck and their hammy mitts clapped over its mouth.

  • Were the staffers wearing shirts of brown color? Wouldn’t surprise me as they work for Allen (R-Racism). Let’s see, could there be any analogies to European regime(s) froom the early to mid 20th century? I don’t know.

  • Prepare ye for the $1,000 Tony Lama boot heel of oppression to the neck. But do we expect calm, rational people around a ‘baccy spitting poseur like Allen? Nope, calm, rational people avoid him like a plague carrying rat.

Webb: Writes about unpleasant things = Bad boy.
Allen: Witnesses unpleasant things and smirks = Good ole boy.

  • C’mon folks, what were the Allenistas supposed to do? I mean, Merry Musgrave tried politely asking the authorities to remove that mean Mr. Sciavo, and that didn’t work. Sometimes if you want your oppression done right you just have to do it yourself. (Or, have your hired thugs do it. Violence is so dirty for an actual candidate. Except for slapping wheelchair bound libertarians. That’s all in a day’s work.)

  • Thanks local NBC reporter for reminding us that Allen is a “Jeffersonian”. Hope you didn’t mean Thomas Jefferson by any chance…

  • You get the idea there is something they really dont want people to hear about, based on how they manhandled that guy. If that allegation were not true, it would be easy to refute it, but instead, they just try to silence the guy. Makes you think they really have something to hide. Really wish I could find out what else is in those sealed files.

  • I’m glad the “news reporter” told us that Felix is OK. I was a little worried.

Seriously, how long til Mike’s attorney files a lawsuit? I’m guessing maybe a couple hours.

    Go Mike!

  • Any chance we can get lots and lots of other constituents to ask the same question at every Allen public appearance? That would rock!

  • to answer your questions:
    1) exactly
    2) more than likely and no
    3) don’t hold your breath

  • Americablog claims that NBC reported Allen’s official resopnse was: “stuff like this happens”

  • Mike’s last entry on Calling All Wingnuts was Oct 10 and a bit prophetic.:

“I’m also trying to “Roger and Me” George Allen whenever I can. And all of this is on top of a full 1L schedule at UVa…

So yeah… I miss doing this stuff – it seemed that at least once a month, something would happen that really got the adrenaline flowing… I miss those tasty morsels of victory.

  • Hey who is handing out the bubbles? Bush has one and now it seems like every Republican pol wants one. The suppression of dissent has been a huge effect of our war president’s security demands.

  • Webb: Writes about unpleasant things = Bad boy.
Allen: Witnesses unpleasant things and smirks = Good ole boy.

Nah, if George Felix Allen Jr. were a good ol’ boy he’d a smacked the impertinence outta that lefty blogger himself. Allen’s supposed to be some sort of football star and yet he gets a handful of pasty-faced goons to defend his honor. Pathetic.

  • Actually, it is almost unquestionably assualt (based on what I saw) and he should file a compalint with the police and the news media should turn over the video and the ones who assaulted him should be indintified and at least questioned if not arrested. Assuming he did not try to touch the Senator in any way possible, there is no legitinite casue for their behavior.

  • From the Washington Post:

A heckler who attempted to confront Sen. George Allen at a campaign appearance in Charlottesville Tuesday was put in a chokehold and slammed to the floor by three of the Republican’s supporters.

We’ll see if other news organs follow the Post’s lead or continue to stick to the namby-pamby language.

    tAiO

braniac, I stand corrected. Perhaps I should have written “Posing wanker dressed up as good ole boy.” Happy Halloween indeed.

  • Unfortunately, all that can be seen is someone being thrown out for what will be assumed to be justifiable reasons. Not only that, he’s defiant (insolent, anyone?) to the end.

This doesn’t play to our benefit. It only shows the authoritarian tendencies that we are already painfully aware of. The rest are completely oblivious to the sometimes necessary evil of civil disobedience and/or dissent.

  • Michael Stark’s letter to NBC29 says it well. I haven’t seen any reference to it above, so here’s the link. From his letter:

“George Allen defends his support of the Iraq war by saying that our troops are defending the ideals America stands for. Indeed, he says our troops are defending our very freedom. What kind of country is it when a Senator’s constituent is assaulted for asking difficult and uncomfortable questions? What freedoms do we have left? Maybe we need to bring the troops home so that they can fight for freedom at George Allen’s campaign events. Demanding accountability should not be an offense worthy of assault.

“I will be pressing charges against George Allen and his surrogates later today. George Allen, at any time, could have stopped the fray. All he had to do was say, “This is not how my campaign is run. Take your hands off that man.” He could have ignored my questions. Instead he and his thugs chose violence. I spent four years in the Marine Corps. I’ll be damned if I’ll let my country be taken from me by thugs that are afraid of taking responsibility for themselves.

“It just isn’t the America I know and love. Somebody needs to take a stand against those that would bully and intimidate their fellow citizens. That stand begins right here, right now.”

This is the language, the action and the courage that gives us hope. Cool stuff. Good luck to him!

Well, he sure as hell didn’t mean GEORGE Jefferson…. 😉

  • Awoken this morning by radio alarm with local yokel ‘news’ guy parroting dem talking points about ‘stalking stark’ incident. Then the first article I found was AP/bob lewis breathlessly reporting about serious-sounding ‘chokehold’ occurrence. Uh-oh! Citizen-journalist. Vet!! Ex-Marine!!! It certainly sounded important. Upon closer look, however, including at the video:

Apparent known stalker menacingly charges public servant engaged in campaign of ideas, screaming and knocking into several bystanders. When this ‘trained killer’ refuses to cease his attempted assault, he escalates the physical violence with those justifiably trying to remove him. Finally subdued and shown the door, he mutters ‘punk’.

I think Kerry was wrong and mean-spirited when he maligned our brave troops, stating that servicemembers don’t “make the most of it” (education), don’t “study hard, …do… homework and …make an effort to be smart”. But these demeaning words would seem to apply to Stark.

Stark’s website gives some clues about his depth of committment to and definition of free speech. There he advises one to “study the terrain carefully before you join the battle”, the final step being the ‘showdown”. We see in the video Stark studying the terrain as he careened through innocents in his attempt to assault Allen. This (one-man) mob rule is what goes for intellectual discourse for liberals.

It seems that Stark’s only other claim to fame is waving a poster with lurid words on it in front of a live-television camera during family hour. Another example of liberals’ engagement in the realm of ideas. Were those filthy words a an ‘illuminative quote” from one of Webb’s porno works? Will Webb have the guts to apologize for these apparent criminal acts of his agent provocateur?
