An Independence Day reflection: Who really loves America?

Guest Post by Morbo

Conservatives often accuse liberals of hating America. It’s an ironic charge because it’s liberals — with their forward-looking views and belief that America can always do better — who constantly prod the country to change and improve.

Our aspirations for this country are pretty simple, yet profound: We insist that our nation live up to the words in its founding documents. We work toward a society that truly values liberty, justice and equal opportunity for all. We insist that the highest form of patriotism is sometimes found in questioning leaders and their decisions instead of blind allegiance to nationalistic goals.

All of this is evidence not of disdain for America but of an optimistic vision of a bright, shared future that is there for us if want it. I would submit that when liberals ask our nation to do better or hold it to its promises, we are not criticizing America but showing how much we care by demanding the country meet the highest standards. We don’t want our nation to fall short precisely because we love it.

Liberals do not hate America — but they do hate what conservatives have done to America. On this Independence Day, as we mark the 230th birthday of our nation, pause to reflect on the conservative legacy that has debased our great nation — and then pledge to keep working for a better country:

* Conservatives took a nation that was universally regarded as a shining beacon of hope for the oppressed and down-trodden and turned it into an object of scorn and derision in every corner of the globe.

* Conservatives made the world’s most powerful economic success story a debt-ridden basket case with an income gap between the rich and the poor that rivals a banana republic.

* Conservatives took a nation forged in religious liberty and arrogantly proclaimed it a “Christian nation.”

* Conservatives mocked our values and shredded our ability to occupy the moral high ground by embracing the indefinite detention and torture of our enemies and perceived enemies.

* Conservatives repeatedly pandered to the basest instincts of the mob instead of offering the people a bold vision.

* Conservatives led a nation of immigrants on two successive xenophobic crusades, first against people of Middle Eastern origin, then against Hispanics.

* Conservatives blithely discarded their own claims to value individual liberty and personal choice by orchestrating hateful attacks against gays and lesbians and using the power of big government to meddle in private reproductive matters.

* Conservatives looked at the natural beauty of our nation and saw something to be exploited; they dirtied its air, fouled it waters, mowed down its old-growth forests and made it harder for the government to stop it, in the hope of making a quick profit.

* Conservatives extolled the virtues of self-reliance and fair play — and then passed a series of tax cuts for the super-rich.

* Conservatives claimed to speak for the “little guy” — and then shredded the social safety net.

* Conservatives spoke of the need for intellectual engagement – and then tried to privatize public education and made it all but impossible for anyone but rich kids to go to college without assuming massive debt.

* Conservatives took the first and most important duty of government, to provide for the safety of the people, and used it as just another campaign “wedge issue.”

* Conservatives waved flags and glorified war – while their draft-dodging leaders threw mud at any battle-tested veteran who dared to speak against them.

This is what conservatives have done to America. They have debased and denigrated a once-great nation in the pursuit of raw power. They have left us in the grip of an amoral ethic that puts the needs of the market ahead of the needs of the people. They have mocked and abused our freedoms and claimed to be patriots while doing it.

No amount of bunting, flag waving and heated rhetoric will make conservative leaders true patriots. The real patriots are the people who stand up to them. The real patriots are the people who will put an end to their reign of terror.

Is America worth saving from these dangerous loons? You bet it is. Enjoy your Fourth of July, but then get back to work.

Gosh, isn’t that what the Declaration of Independence is all about?

Happy Fourth, folks!

  • Conservativism qualifies as a cancer.

Taber’s Medical Dictionary lists four attributes of cancer cells.

1)clonality- genetic changes in a single cell which multiplies to form a clone of malignant cells.(DITTOHEADS/ REPUBLICAN CONGRESS)

    2) Autonomy- Cancerous growth is not controlled or regulated by normal forces.(UNITARY POWERS OF THE PRESIDENCY/ DEBT/ ENVIRONMMENTAL DEGREDATION/ IRAQ)

    3) Anaplasia-Cancer cells have a loss of cellular differentiation and function. (KATRINA/ CONGRESSIONAL LACK OF OVERSIGHT )

    4) Metastasis- Cancer cells ar able to grow in parts of the body other than their site of origin. (FOX NEWS/ CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS)

Time for some chemotherapy on this 4th of July.

  • Great post, Morbo. I copied it (with attribution) and sent it as an Independence Day email to my extended family, many of whom are proud to be conservative and Republicans (a logical impossibility, I know, but logic never bothers them). I, of course, added lots of animated waving US flags along with a large, bold-faced red-white-‘n’-blue “Happy Independence Day”.

  • Morbo, you have given Thomas Paine cause to smile. The U.S. is still young and the equation has become as much global as national. The experiment wasn’t going to be easy and it’s not. At some point down the road maybe we will thank ShrubCo for smacking the world in the face with a wet, putrid, bird flu ridden raw chicken. There are glimmerings of awareness that might indicate we’re not completely incapable of seeing our hand in front of our face in the dark but “might” is the operative word. It’s still an experiment.

I know we can think outside the petri dish. But can we do it on a large enough scale and quickly enough to save our silly little butts. Communication is what it’s all about. We’re living history. It’s better than fiction. At least it is in the Progressive, reality based community. Liberty and fairness don’t get handed out like corn dogs. We’ve had our stinking wake up call. It’s time to push hard on a fresh, uncorrupted, updated paradigm.

The Founding Father’s gave us great tools to work with but they didn’t say they were going to keep fixing things indefinitely. Nail guns can shoot nails into heads just as easily as they can be shot into walls. The folks in charge of the toolbox right now don’t know their asses from holes in the wall. They need to be relieved of dangerous equipment they don’t respect or understand.

    Happy 4th.

  • Wow! Thank you for one of the most eloquent and stirring pieces I’ve read in a long while. This declaration by Morbo gave me that same sense of awe I have watching the firework shows all over our nearly-entirely red state. Too bad it can’t be stuck in the asses of the conservatives and lit. You’d have to run away fast though; all that exploding lard from years of consuming pork-rinds and poor people’s children wouldn’t be pretty.

Kali and Burro’s comments were excellent as well. Thanks to folks like you, this Nebraskan knows she’s not alone, at least in the nation.

  • I second Therese’s comments…I am also from a “red’ State but I have hopes it will change…This was a marvelous post. If I can I will copy it also…and send it on if that’s all right with Morbo.

  • Thanks for the nice feedback. Feel free to send the post far and wide. I just got back from visiting my family in Pennsylvania, and the first thing I did upon returning was get my flag up outside. The conservatives don’t own that either!

    Morbo

  • Morbo,

I put my flag up, too. Just like I did back grad school, height of the Vietnam Quagmire (to hell with the conservative neighbors and radical grad students). I learned last year that your US Senator can get you a very good flag for an extremely reasonable cost. AND it’s flown over the Capitol on a day of your choosing (I had it flown on our anniversary). Pretty good deal.

  • Oh come on. College is over-rated. It’s good for exposing new models of thought and for being not as indoctrinally constrained as government schools (aka high school), but it still has an obedience ethic which constrains your expression. It takes almost 6 months to de-program a college graduate and make them actually productive in the IT field. Fortunately, because they are accustomed to rote schedules and are pliable to authority, they make good long term investments and the investment pays off.
