An Obama landside?: Let’s not get carried away

Guest Post by Morbo

Like many of you, I’m quite excited by Barack Obama’s candidacy. It isn’t just the historic nature of it. There’s a feeling of something special about this campaign, like we truly might be on the verge of a defining moment of American politics.

I laughingly call this sense of being carried away by the man “Obama Fever.” I won’t fess up to a full-blown case, but I know I’ve got more than a touch.

Yet I struggle to remain grounded in reality. I don’t want to be a downer, but progressives need to keep a sense of perspective about the November election. Chances are, it is not going to be an Obama blowout.

Make no mistake, Obama is in an excellent position and can win, but people who are predicting a cakewalk had better wake up. It’s likely to be a tough race.

I say this in light of an Alternet article that has lately been making the rounds. Guy T. Saperstein, past president of the Sierra Club Foundation, predicts a landslide for Obama, possibly 300-350 electoral votes.

I believe this view is Pollyannaish. Saperstein is right that many trends favor Obama. The economy is terrible, the war in Iraq lingers on, the Republican brand has collapsed and so on. If all voters were rational, this would not even be a contest.

But all voters are not rational. People who are barely keeping their heads above water are quite capable of basing their vote on flag pins or an internet rumor that Obama is really a Muslim.

Nor are all people well informed. Huge numbers of Americans still perceive John McCain as a moderate and have at best a vague grasp of what he stands for. The mainstream media continues its love affair with the man, so we can’t expect them to inform the people. That’s one reason why even as the Republican Party sinks overall, McCain still compares favorably with Obama in polls.

We must also accept the unfortunate fact that some people are simply racist and will not vote for a black man, even if they like his views. How many people feel this way? I have no idea. There could be enough of them to tip some states.

But Obama is smarter than McCain, right? Of course he is. So what? Al Gore is at least 10 times smarter than George W. Bush. That race should have been a blowout, yet Bush ran well enough to get close to Gore, enabling the Supreme Court to put Bush in office.

But Obama is a gifted public speaker who connects with crowds, while McCain is wooden and frequently so addled he appears confused. So what? Again, if all voters were rational, McCain would not be a serious contender. Despite his numerous gaffes already, he is anyway.

But it’s a Democratic year! Everyone knows the Democrats are going to do well. I agree. The Democrats will do well in the House and Senate, almost certainly picking up more seats. Sadly, this could cut against Obama. Some voters might feel comfortable voting for McCain, believing that a Democratic Congress will curb his worse impulses.

I’d like to think that as the campaign moves forward, the American public will see McCain’s faults and realize the man is not fit for the White House and at the same time be inspired by the sense of hope that Obama expresses so well. But after eight years of Bush, I will never again make the mistake of assuming that the obviously superior candidate will win. American politics is just not that simple.

Obama can win. But we’re going to have to work for it. Obama will need your money, your activism and your legwork. Nothing would make me happier than an Obama blowout, and if that happens, I’ll gladly eat heaping amounts of crow. But let’s not start serving it up yet. If you want to win this thing, get to work.

Geez. I’ going back to bed. What a depressing post! I know, I know. We’re all thinking it, but why’d you have to, ya know, say it?

Seriously, though, you’re absolutely right. No one ever went broke wagering on the collective ignorance of the American citizenry.

But here’s to hoping we’re wrong and Obama wins a landslide mandate and the GOP implpodes permanently!

A boy can dream, right?

  • No repeats of Bart Simpson running for class president election and then have none of his supporters vote.

“Do you want a recount? One. Two votes for Martin Prince/John McCain.”

  • What encourages me about the Obama campaign is that they don’t appear to be taking anything lighly. They have thousands of organizers going into 17 states, they are registering voters, aggressively raising money, and doing everything they possibly can to work at the community organization level from now until election day.

  • I agree that Obama’s candidacy is, in and of itself, bringing excitement to politics—and that a good many believe that his name is a problem—but that’s easily done away with:

    http://www.studylight.org/lex/heb/view.cgi?number=01288

If the above link works correctly, it will show the number of times the Semitic base for Barack—“barak”— can be found in the Old testament of the Bible. Barak, by the way, means “blessing” or “to bless.”

There will also be many who will not support Obama merely because of his skin tone. While these individuals do have a right to their political viewpoints—and there is certainly no law that can prevent them from voting on the basis of race—the time has come for the debate concerning whether an African American can be President. We’ve had these debates before, many of which centered around the ability of the black race to perform in combat; in sports; in the voting booth and the elected office and the corporate boardroom. Every one of these debates has ended with the irrefutable proof that they can, indeed, perform each and every one of these jobs as well as a white—and in an affective manner of speaking, even better.

An Obama presidency will be an effective presidency; it will be an affective presidency; it will be a reflective presidency upon which the foundational fears peddled by the racists of America will be smashed. Racism will certainly continue to exist in the United States, but it will no longer grow as it once did. It will slowly wither into a tattered, fanatical fringe-segment of society.

It is time for the debate to begin; for the battle worth fighting to be fought; for each and every one of us to become true warriors on the field of American ideals….

  • While it’s gratifying to experience a sympathetic perspective, there’s something disquieting about the adrenaline of group support overshadowing the more difficult need to understand opposing points of view. I’m also a supporter of Obama’s candidacy, and I also get swept up in the emotional pull of that support.

There’s a fine line between political commentary and blatant political support. The best way to make your case is to deliberate, not to make declarations. So far you’ve been very gifted at that. The more grounded your commentary is, the better your readers are able to add those thoughts to their political education, which improves the quality of the general discourse in their own circles, outside of your web log.

That’s how you make a difference. So I applaud your need to stay grounded. Keep up the good work.

  • Morbo, you’re absolutely right. This isn’t going to be a cakewalk.

Remember, 63,000,000 morons voted for George Bush in 2004 – and those same morons will be voting in 2008.

  • >> Remember, 63,000,000 morons voted for George Bush in 2004

No, no, no… 63 million *Americans* voted for a moron in 2004.

  • Obama can win. But we’re going to have to work for it. Obama will need your money, your activism and your legwork.

This is the money quote. Optimism is okay; complacency isn’t.

As anonymous notes above, of course, the Obama campaign isn’t being complacent–unlike some *cough*Kerry*cough* campaigns in the past. They’ll still need all the help they can get, though.

  • I think there will be a landslide but it will be for McCain. Obama is too far left of the electorate and will not be able to flip any of the red states. McCain will pick up Michigan, Florida, and Ohio. Read a 1988 newspaper around this time and nearly all newspapers predicted a Dukakis blowout and also had polling data to prove it.

  • Remember, 63,000,000 morons voted for George Bush in 2004

No, no, no… 63 million *Americans* voted for a moron in 2004.

No, no, no… 63 million American morons voted for another moron in 2004.

  • Helena Montana, you beat me to it, but thanks for fixing that…never underestimate the stupidity of the populace…what P.T. said…sucker born every day..

  • Should Cindy McCain’s Brain Damage Be A Campaign Issue?

I don’t know whether Americans care if the First Lady is mentally disabled – that’s a question for McCain’s pollsters. What I want to know is why McCain would even subject his poor wife to the rigors of a presidential campaign and worldwide scrutiny in the first place. The question speaks directly to McCain’s personal cruelty and unbridled ambition.

Although the true extent of the brain damage has not been publicly disclosed, Cindy McCain’s 2004 stroke is not a secret.

In a very flattering September 2007 interview in More, Paul Alexander wrote about the stroke damage:

“In conversation, she will occasionally have trouble remembering certain facts, especially from the recent past, and if you look closely you realize she cannot make her right hand into a complete fist, which has affected her handwriting, if not her ability to grasp a gearshift knob. “It’s not bad,” she says, describing the damage to her hand. “I can function. I have short-term memory loss. I can remember all the major details of my life, but I sometimes can’t remember what happened last week.”

I suspect that John McCain, viewed his wife’s stroke more in terms of how it would affect his bid for the presidency than else.

From a January 2005 Larry King show:

“MCCAIN: I was the one at home that everyone came to to program their computers, fix their phones, do anything electrical, technical, anything on the computer. I can’t get near it now. I’m overwhelmed by it.

And it’s weird for me. And I might also say, I suffer from migraines also. And your last caller that called in — and I just had an episode about a week and a half ago, where I didn’t know, I thought I was having another stroke. It was a different kind of…

KING: Has the senator been very sympathetic?

MCCAIN: Yes. And I — please don’t — let me explain that. He was very confused in the beginning. He didn’t — like everyone in the family, how could it happen to my wife? I’m 18 years older than she is. It doesn’t happen to someone that’s younger than you are. So on his behalf, I think he’s trying to understand all this. It’s a lot for him to take in.”

In October 2007, Cindy McCain was hobbling around South Carolina as the result of a fall down in a Phoenix grocery store. Was her fall caused by her brain damage? Is the question any of our business?

Inevitably, the issue of the extent of Cindy McCain’s brain damage will enter the public arena. So far, Mrs McCain has only had to field softballs lobbed at her by sympathetic journalists. Can the McCain campaign limit her public appearances to three-minute soundbites until November? I don’ think so, not in today’s political environment.

Why, Senator McCain, would you do this to your wife?

  • Scott d, I dont see any papers predicting a “blowout” for Obama…and too far left? How’s that? explain please…off topic a little but read Glen Greenwald’s article about British vs American conservatives and how the British right is trying to preserve privacy and keep government (you know that bad big government) out of citizen’s lives. American conservatisim seems to encompass saying you’re for less government as long as it allows the rich to keep their money, and their ability to make more and not contribute to infrastructure…nice system there…

  • >> No, no, no… 63 million American morons voted for another moron in 2004

“American morons”. Wow. That’s just sad. How can anyone say stuff like that is beyond reasonable understanding. Us-vs-Them mentality is why we ended up with Bush in the first place. Geeze, isn’t that obvious?

  • Mr.Obama, the hHstoric gifted speaker will certainly take United states to each and every corner of this world when he will be elected as President of this great Nation United states.

We are all waiting for this great moment that the world has ever seen yet.
It will be incrediable to see once again the greatest powerful United states under this great intelligent leader Mr.OBAMA.
May god bless him for a long life with ound health.
    P.K.Gaman

  • Obama has too much money and orgnazation NOT to win in a landslide. With so few Republicans passionate enough to vote this year, he’s going to clear a lot of states. He probably won’t win Georgia, but everything is in his favor.

  • Thanks for this post.

I have to remind myself everyday that it will not be easy. Like Anonymous said, it appears that Obama is not taking it lightly at all. His and Dean’s 50-state strategy are giving me hope that Dem’s are aggressively courting votes and trying to change minds. Although I have not actively worked for the campaign other than giving money, I have resigned myself to the fact that I will have to get my behind in gear come August or so and pound the pavement with thousands of his other supporters.

Every 4 years, Americans surprise me with their ability to vote for issues that don’t matter (really, America? You are going to vote for the guy who is most religious? What’s that going to do in light of the 1st Amendment and all?) and sometimes for their outright stupidity. Anytime Dubya gets a second term in light of all his shenanigans, you have to wonder whether we are at all intelligent or share any of the same values.

  • Nate Silver at 538 gives Obama about an 11% chance of winning by 375+, so its possible, just not very likely

  • If Obama wins, they’ll be no one in Washington to say no. To anything. If you were genuinely “progressive” you’d want checked and balanced government.

    Hold onto your wallet.

  • Gee let me think, has Obama risked his life for the freedoms of this country – NEVER!

McCain – Not only is he a HERO, but both sons are serving this country as well.

As Commander in Chief of this country, I vote for McCain, not only for his experience, but for his service to this country.

  • How is he a hero, he crashed some planes and got captured, I could do that

It takes vision and intelligence, not experience to be a great leader, Obama has it, mcCain does not

  • Obama is nothing more than a construct of his handlers and a willing press. You do know that he doesn’t write those speeches don’t you??
There is nothing new in anything he has said, it’s the standard liberal tax and spend position starting with his latest “lets raise taxes on everyone who earns more than “x” and
” I would have preferred a more gradual adjustment of energy prices”.
Something new would be anyone, reps or dems promoting a FAIR FLAT tax code.

Most of the posts here refer to how stupid Americans are… but you people that think that Obama has any “new” ideas seem to be the stupid ones from where I am sitting.

btw I voted for Barry Hussian Obama in my Texas primary so that Hilbillery Cheaton would not get the nomination.

  • You people are still crying about losing to president Bush.. “the Supreme Court put him in the white house”??? oh my gawd you people are still counting chads in Florida. Hell you couldnt even put your own nomination to rest without a DNC hearing. You had to argue tro three days just to put Obamma Husein in the spot overy HRC. When are you people gonna quit whinning about how you get cheated every election you lose, how the govt owes you something, and how to feed the poor. Look at what you did to Congress. You put your morons in the seats, remember they said “things will change now with a Demorat controlled house” “out of Iraq” ect, ect ect…..well look at what you have done. Fuel at an all time high, we are still in Iraq, housing market in the tank, and your congress approval rating is at an all time low…. LOL.. keep up the good work. As far as a landslide with Obama, well dont think for a minute the American people buy into this crud. You are in for a big suprise. IMHO …anyway I dont know why I write these things, as they never get posted . You ever notice only the freindly to the blogger gets viewed.

  • It’s all entertainment. A sporting event. Root for your team and their quarterback. Who will win? Who cares? It won’t matter. Who chooses who is going to run? I didn’t have a say in it. No average citizen does. We are presented with a group of the chosen few and are told to pick one, as if there is some real difference in who we are choosing. Vanilla or vanilla bean. Choose one. Not much difference, just a slight appearance thing. There won’t be any change on what’s important, just some window dressing to make it appear as if things are changing. I’m not voting for either of the two, Obama or McCain. When they continue to shed blood, it will not be on my hands.

  • McCain gaffes don’t bring out his supporters unlike talk of an Obama landslide. Does one get extra McCain points for mentioning his military service?

  • To all you Obama cultist, cool aid drinkers. Here is the truth!
Barack Hussein Obama = Wright, trinity church, Ayers, Phfluger, his wife, Rezco, endorsed by terrorists and terror dictators, most liberal left wing Senator,no expierence, most absent voter in Senate, elitist(cling to guns and religion) talk with no conditions to dictators and our worst enemies. etc. etc.No, the American people are not morons,as those morons state in some messages, they are smart and will never vote for that phony Obama “moron”. It will be McCain by a landslide!!!!!!!!!

  • axt113, you are spot-on that our country needs checks & balances in order to function for the greater good. That alone would make me look more seriously at McCain; (against my better judgement.)

However you have to look at the long term picture, too. A McCain presidency would horribly unbalance the Supreme Court, and all those checks & balances would go out the window.

  • ToddC said:
“If you were genuinely “progressive” you’d want checked and balanced government.”

Like we have had for the last 7 1/2 years?

annonymous implies that only veterans should be president…

Bet you voted for the Chickenhawk AWOL Bush in 2004 against the Swiftboated War Decorated Kerry!

Rethug trolls like you are welcome at this site, but expect to get lambasted!

  • Obama is completely full of it. What great new ideas has he proposed? That’s right, none!

His “big idea” is to raise taxes on folks earning over $250,000/yr to “shore up social security” and give our country “universal healthcare.” Too bad our country faces a drawn out recession and increases in taxes on the wealthly could possible extend it for years. I own a small business myself and am in the highest tax bracket. The more the government takes, the fewer employees I hire. It’s very simple.

You Obama lovers are also obsessed with his claim to have opposed the Iraq War from the start. While admirable, once in office, Obama voted along with almost every other senator to CONTINUE FINANCING THE WAR IN IRAQ!

If Obama were really the AGENT OF CHANGE that he claims to be, he would have voted against funding the war.

  • Is it rethugnican troll day at The Carpetbagger?

    scott d
    Dale Gatlin
    ToddC
    annonymous
    Cravin Morehead
    Bubba
    HeyZeus
    frank viola

I can’t figure out which are repug trolls, which are seriously stupid, and which are just demented!

  • There’s an obvious difference between opinion and fanaticism. While left-wing fanatics are common to Steve’s web log, and usually get a pass, it’s fascinating to see right-wing fanatics participating.

I really have to stop reading these comments, because they are dominated by crazies. On this particular round, they seem to be of both varieties. Yikes!

    (heavy sigh)

  • First, get Obama elected.
Then, do what the Republicans did in 2000 — treat the election, whatever the margin, like a blowout. If the Republicans roll like the Dems did in 2001 ….
By the way, I am a 60-something lifelong Republican who will vote for Obama, because he is the one who is closest to the Main Street values of the Republican party I grew up in — Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower. Modern Easy Street Republicans represent the triumph of the worst of the American right.

  • This is the funniest thing I’ve read in weeks. I’d certainly call Obama turning the Unites States into a socialist country, “A defining moment of American politics”. How about some substance; the “I stand for change” thing is weak unless he starts telling us what he’s going to change and how he is going to do it. Wait until the truth starts coming out about what Obama is really about. He’ll crash and burn.
“Al Gore is at least 10 times smarter than George W. Bush”; smart enough to make an award winning propaganda movie that used special effects and fake science to deceive weak minded folks into believing the “global warming” scam. After all, his Global Inventment Trust company makes millions selling carbon credits, while he damages the environment flying around in his huge Gulfstream jet. Don’t forget “Al Gore, Super Genius” did “invent” the internet.

And don’t get me started on McCain, he’s about as bright as a Christmas tree light bulb.

Either way, America is the looser in this election!

  • Drink the cool-aide ….and you are correct I am a right wing thug.. I will fight any and all to keep this country free. two tours in Asia, one in the gulf…and you morons sit here saying how this man is going to free your people…have another sip….

  • SadOldVet:
You’re exactly correct: we haven’t had checked government and that’s the problem.

With no one to say no the most extreme elements of both parties take over, because they’re the most committed. The 95% of the country that isn’t a raging partisan has other things to do all day, but the organized 5% can do extraordinary damage. They use access to perpetuate power, rationalizing that since they’re only slicing off a tiny bit for their interests they’re doing no meaningful harm, but in the aggregate all that slicing adds up. Each little program by itself sounds good, but on the whole are they all good? Most? I’d bet probably few. The mere fact that someone asks for a subsidy is a big signal that they’re idea is probably not worth subsidizing. If something needs a subsidy, then the odds are it’s not a worthwhile endeavor. Not always, but usually. But if a public expenditure can harvest votes, you can be sure it’ll come to life independent of its value.

For all the very reasonable talk of an exit strategy for Iraq, or very reasonable talk of measureable benchmarks, have you ever heard the same very reasonable requests of the thousands and thousands of other government programs that never make the front page?

There’s no way someone with a job and kids and a life can ever monitor and prevent all the mischief elected officials can create that someone else funds. With appropriately checked government, at least the something-for-nothing promises of the left (e.g. universal health care) will have to compete with the something-for-nothing promises of the right (e.g. nation building). It’s pure fantasy to think that without ideological competition, the rulemakers can police themselves.

  • This country (at least the part I am in) is too racist at this time to elect Obama. No matter how you spin it that is still the bottom line. It won’t matter his policies or promises because it will take a miracle for the USA to go color blind on election day.

  • Morbo, I call around the country 40 hours a week for Obama for America, so allow me to report a wide-angle shot of progressive America right now.

I have no sense whatsoever of people being “carried away.” Yes, there is enormous enthusiasm; I first worked in politics stuffing envelopes for JFK as a young teenager, and I’ve been involved in everything since – the closest thing to this campaign in terms of feeling, enthusiasm and committment is RFK’s campaign. However, this is also a movement that is strongly grounded in reality – people know they have to work their asses off. In 40 years of experience, the people who give at higher levels are usually rich. Not this time. The majority of the people who have “maxed out” or are close are middle class and working class people, people who are making serious sacrifices to make the donations they are giving, because the believe so deeply that things have to change. They are volunteering for work on campaigns. I have never seen a campaign where the voters have such a “pride of ownership.”

I’ve told people for the past year that if you want to understand the Obama campaign, you need to go read “the bible” – Saul Alinsky’s “Reville for Radicals,” the best manual on community organizing ever. As a former community organizer, it was obvious to me from the beginning what they were doing. And now they have “community organized” America from the ground up.

And with the kind of organization that exists and the level of enthusiasm, it’s no wonder that the Democratic candidate is leading for Senatorial races in Kentucky (McConnell bites the dust!), freakin’ Mississipp f’r chrissake!, New Mexico by 2-1, Colorado – the list goes on. The Cook Report now lists SEVENTY House races as going Democratic and another 12 leaners. We may see a House of Representatives with fewer than 100 Republicans in it. We’re going to see the filibuster-proof Senate.

Yes, it’s good advice to run like the Devil is snapping at your heels, because he is – McCain and the RNC raised $45 million last month. But let’s keep our eyes on the prize: we can see a Democratic administration and Congress able to make more progress than any since FDR’s first re-election in 1936 (after which we got Social Security, the Wagner Act, etc.)

    We can do this.

  • Craig:

Will you concede it’s possible to disagree with Obama’s policy preferences without being a racist? Or that there are legitimate reasons for not voting for him, independent of his race?

  • Please don’t take the phrase “independent of his race” to mean I think his race is a legitimate reason for not voting for him (or for him).

  • I agree that it won’t be a cakewalk and we’ll need to work very, very hard this year.

It will be a battle until the end.

And, when the day arrives, it will be a landslide

  • calvin finds himself, per usual, agreeing with the author. calvin’s experience is that there are a lot of people across America who will not abide a non-white as president. There are very virulent things being posted and circulated on the web. All of which reinforce the racist mind, but not in racist terms. He’s a muslim. She’s a radical. And on and on and on.

Nobody with half-a-brain would believe any of it except for the mental pygmies looking for a means to cover up their blatant racism. And, it will only get worse as the election nears.

Obama’s website is not enough for these true believers because they won’t believe the truth coming from what they perceive to be a biased source. But, the truth is, they wouldn’t be swayed by the truth. They dismiss the truth because it is “inconvenient”.

The nut cases will continue to come out of the woodwork because their core is being threatened. Right down to the core of their self-identity. Bush/Rove played these people like a virtuoso. They felt comfortable with him. Now, not so much. They are afraid of Obama because he threatens the very core of their being.

This is a group that is predictable in some ways, but not others. So, it’s hard to say what, outside of hiding in the “tubes” and spreading crap they will do. calvin would only add that HRC would have been subjected to similar attacks by these small minded people.

Are they already among Bush’s 25 percenters? Or, do they represent another demographic and what are their numbers? calvin is more concerned about their activities outside the ballot box. An Obama win may cause some of them to feel like trapped animals.

You know, like we’ve been feeling for 8 years.

  • Everyone should never loose confidence to understand that the GOP is not going down with out a fight. So, for you all to believe Obama is going to win by a land slide is likely to disappear soon. Over and over Mainstream Media keeps the message alive that America does not know Obama. For me just done reading Audcity of Hope and there are a huge list of questions with which some would consider insults to Southern White American’s.

How are we supposed to know Obama in five months? That’s what they will convince American’s, not to vote for Obama because so much to debate about will appear in the final days of the election. Here is the strategy, but let me be clear, I do hope Obama wins this contest, so don’t think this ideal is coming from an Obama hater.

Here, for me change is what should be done, but my personal optimism is minimal because of my industry experience. Also knowing the powerful complicity Mainstream Media works as a key player, to schmooze America and stir with all the intent to steer the politics for the powerful elite across the spectrum. CNN, FOX, MSNBC are propaganda machines for Bush and Company for the last seven years. Please you mean embeded reporters did not see this horrible Iraq situation, or our poor economy or gas problem? Then all of a sudden Scott McCullen happens to get religion and confess to America Bush lied. Oh my God, now the media is clear of being complicit with these Bush bandits? Not.

Please, Scott is so connested to these first line journalist it is crazy to believe none of them knew it. Every time Chris Mathews is on and asks those creepy questions along with Brite Hume, Hannity, or Wolf Blitzer, they all make it sound like they do not know what is happening. This is their full time job and if they can not figure this stupid situation America is in why let them continue on? They need to be replaced.

Just this past year since the Democrats gained a small margin Congress the media reflects with a few first lines Journalist bravely come forward to condemn Bush for obvious failure. For me the actions committed are such an out rage the media should have drummed Bush out of office without impeachment. Demanding resignation as they did with Clinton. But that is not happening. It only shows the respect to corruption is more important to the Mainstream Media than to the mission to serve the public in the public electromagnetic spectrum. Ladies and gentelmen of America if Congress taxed the political commercials fairly we would likely solve our Social Security problem. LOL.

The only Politicians I hate are Bush and Lieberman. Bush is obvious to hate, Kucinich spelled it out in his thirty five counts of impeachment. This should be carried out no matter how many days are left in his presidency. Though we know that will not happen. Lieberman used the Democratic Party to stay elected, for me he is the biggest twit in politics and a huge embarrassment for Gore and whole Democratic Party, from my view.

Hate Radio is already turning up the talk about Obama, his wife is going to be down loaded as a bigger bitch than Hillary and likely racist, which is happening now. Obama with ties to Rezko is just beginning along with big money connections tied to Democratic associates like Senator Dodd and Countrywide is likely a small sample of the mix many others will be found out in connections to good deals. Much has not been talked about concerning Obama’s ties to other Arab leadership and rich billionaires of Iraq. All those billionaires are for the most part connected to our lost tax dollars, where many of these Iraqi patriots happen to be on America’s terrorist list living in the country. Yikes. Here Rockefeller know who these people are and the sludge hammer for decades in screwing America out of billions of interest in tax money.

For me it is experience that counts a lot, as a matter of fact, if a person can do the job but does not have a degree, that one without a degree should be considered especially if it is a veteran that served in our armed forces. My past experience is in industry for over forty years. In most cases I have worked in many companies even those owned and operated by a Black person. Sorry but my report is as witness to Blacks as managing and operations people their style or character is not recommended. Most situations that involved Blacks as a management team resulted in chaos, poor record keeping, and horrible reverse bias against white people. All this leading to companies, departments, or sections of a company failing. Blacks, with degrees have or usually resulted in horrible operations and likely replaced immediately when identified. Very few good Black management people are out there, if there are successes many are supported by loyal assistants and support staff. Obama has no clue what his is getting into.

  • As Commander in Chief of this country, I vote for McCain, not only for his experience, but for his service to this country.

Unless you are at this moment George W. Bush, you can’t vote for anyone “as commander-in-chief”. I suppose you mean “for Commander-in-Chief”. However, no one can vote for “Commander-in-Chief”; not a single ballot will read that way in November.

In November, you’ll be voting for a President (OK, technically for a slate of delegates to vote for a President). One — but only one — duty of the President is to serve ex officio as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. But the Presidency carries much more with it.

Since you’re clearly Republican, I can see why you’d want to confuse those two positions. Just about the only chance McCain has is to play up the military thing; on all other issues, he’s toast. So he needs people to view the Presidency through a military lens. However, history generally hasn’t been kind to military men as president. It is possible to recognize McCain’s service and sacrifice without believing that this gives him any special qualification to hold the highest civil office in the land.

  • For some of you who have a hard time understanding or are confused by some of the terms used by the left in their pathetic arguments I have compiled a translation list to help you out. Here is what I can figure the real meaning for certain words and phrases are:

    Progressive………….Socialist
Bush lied…………….. I dont agree with what he stands for
We were robbed in the election………..Not enough people voted for our guy
Disenfranchised voter……..stay at home voter spending his food stamps on wine
Obama says change………more welfare, higher taxes, more gov’t controll
    I love Obama……………….Kool Aid
Immediate pull out of Iraq…………cowards way out of a fight
    Racist…………..you wont vote for Obama
    Right wing thug……See racist
Hillary got cheated…………..more people wanted Obama as their guy
Bush…………Our commander in Chief, like it or not
Morons who voted for Bush……you dont agree with me so your a moron
wont believe in Obamas web site……..wont drink the Kool Aid
“independent of his race”………….vote for me or your a racist
    universal health care……….see Progressive
    tax the oil companies……….see Progressive

This is just a few words that I thought might help you if you were confused, perhaps you may figure out some more translations and post them as well.. Have fun with it….

  • ooohhhhh that would be nice to see McCain lose by a landslide…..cuz i do not want another 4 years of Bush and his croonies garbage

  • with all of your bull shits baloines , ever notice that AMERICA is for sale ?????? lokk around you ,railroads, seaports. budwieser, etc, etc, etc, and what else would like to know ??? it’s because of your azzwipes republicans and dumbazz Bush dosn’r give a rat behind about american workers who lost their jobs …………………. what a dumbazz republican party !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This election if judged simply on the merits should be a ladslide win for Sen. Obama nut given many white people still cannot come to grips with a Black man leading a football team, it is clear race matters to them when voting for a President. There is no other explanation for the bitter Hillary fans who say they will vote for McCain whose policies are nothing like Hillary. The biggest difference other than honesty and integrity in Sen. Obama and Clinton was gender and race. For one to say they were supporting Clinton because of her policy positions but will now support McCain rather than the person who has almost the same policy positions is intellectually dishonest and a poor attempt to hide their discomfort with a Black president (even one who is only half Black).

  • Put the kool-aid down everyone. This guy will not be good for the country. Do any of you really know who Obama is? The little I know disturbs me. You will all feel foolish for having supported an incompetent boob like him if he is elected…… God I hope not.

  • I have seen all commemnts, and all seem looking for change. Both candiddate are very gracefull and knowledgeable. The crucial point know is saving America, so it is time to vote for Obama. Go fox, vote for Obama. Let see change in the world.

  • more terms for translation
    ……
America is for sale…..American Unions have crippled the factories causing layoffs
    Hillary fan…..see racist.
Discomfort with a black president……wont vote for my guy

Y’all see a trend here. What is happening is the typical Jesse Jackson ploy…If you dont vote for my guy than you are a racist.. This is how the left is going to play this election out.. any argument against Obamma and you will have Jesse, Al, Wright, and Obammas wife calling you a racist… Oh It is now coming clear to me.. no argument about substance, experience, caring for ameirca, it will be the race card to the end. The sorry part is the media and the rest of the left will buy into this …what a sad day for America, .. Personally I think it is great that a black man has reached his goals, however to play this thing out like it is going to go is a real shame and I am surprised that seemingly intelligent people buy into this… sad sad day for My Country…..

  • It’s a matter of the degree of consciousness development of the voters as the author of this article suggests. I am not getting my hopes up as I was sorely disappointed in 2000 and in 2004. I simply could not believe that the majority of Americans (51%) were that stupid and ignorant to re-elect George Bush. But the truth is that this country is divided by how conscious and therefore how Individuated the voters are. Americans are steeped in narcissism and co-dependency….this means that the American culture itself is largely unconscious. American values are the great Maya or illusion of this country. People need the big house, SUV, two cars in the garage…to prop up their sense of Being and Value. This is called “keeping up with the Joneses. The average person’s sense of Being and Value is determined by socio-economic status and how many toys one owns…it is not generated from within. This is due to the deep split in most Americans. America has lost its Soul under Bush. Bush sold our national Soul to China when he started the Iraq debacle…which is largely financed by Chinese held debt (bonds). ..so did CEO’s by transferring our manufacturing base there. Bush postures like a tough guy but in reality he does not have the balls to stand up when it matters. Bush is symptomatic of what is wrong with psyches of Americans. He is a scared little boy inside. The more outwardly identified with one’s job, a collective religious myth, how much one owns, one’s socio-economic status…the more likely the voter is to identify with the Republicans and vote for McCain. The more inwardly identified…the more Individuated…the more highly evolved…are more likely to vote for Obama. I am hopeful but reserved.

  • Good luck to you with your optimism. Right now my daily e-mails from Hillary Clinton precinct captains and delegates are running 35 to 1 in favor of voting for McCain. Many have left the party and registered as Independents; a few as Republicans!

The mainstream media, of course, chalks this up to a “few sore losers” and “angry women”.

On the contrary, if things don’t change by the convention, and by change, I mean the truth about Obama coming out and the DNC reversing its politically suicidal belief that a far left black candidate can win against McCain, then John McCain is already the next president, and not just by a hair, by a landslide.

Let us Democrats not forget that Karl Rove and the GOP quite effectively disenfranchised three MILLION black and minority voters in 2004 by throwing away their votes, many of them ABSENTEE ballots of TROOPS IN IRAQ, and those rules are still in place. The polls are bought and paid for by the GOP-owned mainstream media to tell whatever skewed, fake, and phony results they want that serve to further dupe ObamaNation and also rally the racist GOP to come out by the tens of millions.

So before you go on slapping yourselves on the back, know that there are a lot of angry Hillary voters out here that are definitely going to vote a straight GOP ticket to make damn sure that the DNC listens to them THE NEXT TIME and doesn’t put up a can’t win far left candidate who came out of nowhere, with no substance whatsoever, without being fully vetted.

We’ve seen this movie before; we know how it ends. That movie was “Kerry and Terry”. Fool us once…

  • Bubba sayeth:
anyway I dont know why I write these things, as they never get posted . You ever notice only the freindly to the blogger gets viewed.

No, not here at least. Even you Bubba, can jump on the stump. You see, though we may disagree, we do want to know where you’re coming from.

Thanks for your service and sacrifice.

  • Be aware, too, that even if Obama wins the election, wins the vote counting (not at all the same thing) and wins the Supreme Court fight (the hardest election of all), he still has to live long enough to take office and get things done…

And the bubbas will fight every step of the way, by any means available. There’s this sense of entitlement out there and it goes without saying…

  • Wow, was there a Google thing somewhere that all the crazies descnded upon us?

No one knows anything about Obama. No intellectual curiousity to find out.

He’s a radical, socialist, communist, Marxist, elitist. He’s black for god sake! That makes him lazy by DNA.

Yes, the ignorance of our country is on display right here and right now.

Enjoy the golf gear boys. Organized propaganda already and he’s not even elected. Insight into the continued Bush 3rd term.

  • Sorry, but I did not see anything in your piece that gave a reasonable explanation as to why he should lose any state that Kerry won last time.

Pennsylvania would seem to be the exception but with Governor Ed Rendell, a big Clinton backer, pledging to work his butt off for Obama and Senator Casey already working toward that end, I think that PA. will be a blue state again.

So, ceding Florida to the Republicans again, while leaving Ohio up in the air,
If Obama wins Colorado, almost a certainty and New Mexico, quite likely, he wins.

Then, if he also picks up a couple or a few of the following: Nevada, Iowa, Missouri, Virginia and even Indiana and North Carolina, It becomes a decisive victory, whether or not a landslide.

  • You state that there would be a landslide (for Obama) if voters were rational.
Bullshit. We who oppose Obama are very, very rational and DO NOT WANT THIS ULTRA LIBERAL LIAR IN THE WHITE HOUSE. He has so many crooks and anti-american as friends it is insame to think that voters do not look at this and think of Obama as a liar and also a Chicago crook. Obama wants to tax the rich. Well, NEWS: The Obamas are rich. They have placed ONE MILLION COLLARS in a fund that yields TAX FREE INCOME. Why not pay taxes on this money, Obama? He is afraid to have town hall meeting with McCain as he’ll screw up. What will he, with so little domestic and especiall international experience, do when he’s locked up with the likes of leaders of the Middle Eastern countries, Chavez, Castro (Oh, wait, these people really like Obama as he’ll bring our nation closer to their way of thinking and then we’ll be just like them. The American Jewish people supporting Obama is absolutely mind boggling to me. If he gets in office, Obama will not be the friend of Israel that our past presidents have been. Wait and see.

This oil crisis: it will be over if Obama wins as the reason is clear: forces are making sure the barrel of oil goes up, up as they want an Obama win. Who are these forces? Think…..

Yes, WE ARE VERY RATIONAL. WE JUST DO NOT TRUST THIS ILL SUITED MAN TO BE OUR LEADER, PRESIDENT, COMMANDER IN CHIEF. HE HAS SPENT ALL OF HIS YOUTH OFF MAINLAND U.S. AND MOST OF IT IN A MUSLIM COUNTRY, INDONESIA, WITH A MUSLIM STEP FATHER AND VISITED WITH HIS FATHER WHO HAD A MUSLIM BURIAL. HIS RELATIVES (BROTHERS, SISTER, AUNTS, GRANDMOTHER, ETC. ARE MUSLIM).

NOW DO YOU GET IT? BUT YOU PROBABLY WON’T PUBLISH THIS ONE BECAUSE IT IS NOT PRAISING OBAMA LIKE THE LIBERL MEDIA CONSTANTLY DOES.

  • axt113: you are really a horse’s rear. You could crash planes? Bet you don’t know the first thing about an airplane.

McCain served his country (unlike Obama) with dignity and honor. axt113, how would you survive capture by the Viet Cong many years ago? You would probably be a turncoast.

    You are an asshole.

  • ““American morons”. Wow. That’s just sad. How can anyone say stuff like that is beyond reasonable understanding. Us-vs-Them mentality is why we ended up with Bush in the first place. Geeze, isn’t that obvious?”

    JC is exactly right.

Obama will not win with a landside, but he will win. The Media will see to that. Every time he moves up in the polls, the Media will beat him down, and when he goes too far down, they’ll lift him up. They play this game every four years.

The country has decided that it is time to shift to the left, and the election will reflect that. The Media; however, will make sure that waiting for the results is as nerve-racking and unpleasent as possible.

  • Hey, Bubba – Try four tours of duty in Viet Nam and I’m voting for Obama. McCain doesn’t support Vets. He blasts the Supreme Court decision upholding the Constitution that he would have to promise to support if President. He is against habeas corpus, a fundamental concept that our country should support in our treatment of anyone we detain, not just US citizens. It’s a matter of our honor and core values and how we treat others. This decision does not release anyone, it only allows due process.to proceed. If the detainees are proved guilty, then they won’t go free.

Even Major General Hood, who was a commander at Gitmo admitted that some of the detainees were innocent, but that nobody wanted to be the one to sign the release papers. I believe this was in an interview by the Wall Street Journal in which he praised the recent Supreme Court decision.

I was fighting to protect our freedom, Constitution and American values. What were you fighting for?

  • No matter how much we like Obama we still only get one vote (less if Republicans can suppress it).

So a million people who barely like McCain vote for him And 750,000 wildly enthusiastic Obama supporters vote for him. McCain wins.

  • To Missmudd…
you are right…oops I mean correct…my opinion did get posted and I am thankfull for that. I love seeing forums like this .. think about it: a free country with freedom of speech to do things like this…please think about how we got here and how precious this freedom is… I say freedom not right.. a freedom is earned and kept by people …brave people …. soldiers before us…. who died , knowingly giving their lives to protect this freedom…. GOD BLESS AMERICA……

  • …forces are making sure the barrel of oil goes up, up as they want an Obama win.

You mean to say there’s somebody out there manipulating an American election and oil prices? That’s some scary stuff. Can you give us more details?

  • I am just an old white guy who has been through the Camelot, Great society and so on down the line but even though I think McCain is closer in ideology to the dems than I would like, Obama is , in my opinion a socialist but also an elitist. His wife is in the same category but she is an America hater. Obama believes that money grows on rich folks trees and that every one should be able to pick those trees. Redistribution of wealth is not a new concept but I’m hoping that rational thinking people will be able to see through the smoke and mirrors and see exactly what an empty suit he really is and how dangerous he could be for this country

  • Has FOX News gone off the air? I’m just wondering why we are so lucky to have this sudden infusion of such preceptive insight.

  • As the person who has been predicting a Democratic blowout here the longest — I was saying it over a year ago, if you look through the archives — before we knew who the candidates would be — let me gladly defend my position. Warning, this’ll be looong.

But first, let me echo a couple of points made above. I am arguing for confidence, not complacency. Of course we could LOSE the election — but McCain can’t – outside of blunders we make — WIN it. However, and this was something I couldn’t predict early, we have a candidate who has shown no complacency. His whole strategy has been based on getting out the vote and getting usually non-voters interested, and that matters. (Remember that surveys are weighted based on the historical voting patterns of certain groups. It is impossible to find a “Magic Town” in real life, to mention an obscure James Stewart movie I love. All they can do is take the survey and weight the various groups. But pollsters are likely to miss it if a usually low-voting group increases its particpation — youth and blacks in general — or if a larger than usual percentage of the group stays home — Religious conservatives.)

Tom Cleaver’s post is solid and worth reading as far as the campaign goes. Obama supporters — including myself — are not saying ‘we can coast’ because, even if we could, we need the work to inspire the down-ticket races. But the key line in this entire thread comes from BBB: “With so few Republicans passionate enough to vote this year, he’s going to clear a lot of states.”

We were all so traumatized by Bush getting re-elected that we forget that his margin was about 2% — with the following advantages that the Republicans no longer have:
    an incumbent President,
a war that still had — for some people – a chance of being successful
    a very weak Democratic candidate
    the Rove/Scaife/Murdocj/Limbaugh attack machine
the support for the top of the ticket from down-ticket candidates
the support from the Bush family, and from a lot of Senators who actually liked Bush
and the ‘social issues’ in particularly the scare tactics about gays.

NONE of these are working for McCain to anything like the extent they were for Bush. (Nobody seems to be noticing the continual sniping between the Bush family and McCain but when the dust settles, people will notice the effect it had. They really hate each other — and I think one explanation for the Washington TIMES comments below may be that Pappy is getting his friend, the Rev. Moon, to sabotage McCain.)

There are two special areas that are supposedly reservoirs of strength for McCain — racism and the media. But the majority of strong racists (outside Appalachia) are already Republicans, so we aren’t losing that many votes. (In Appalachia many of them are Democrats — and yes, you’ll still find pockets of Democratic racists of the Ferraro stripe elsewhere — but, for Appalachia, these people are also Religious Conservatives who are as likely to stay home as to vote for McCain. And the Ferraro style racists are more winnable than we think. Many of them are the sort who hate blacks in the abstract but who manage to get along quite well with co-workers, neighbors, etc, who are black. They might not vote for ‘a black’ but they might be more than willing to vote for Obama despite his blackness.

As for the media, no, no news organization is describing McCain in the terms we might use — but we should be as willing to protest against their bias if it worked in our favor. We don’t want that either. We want good solid reporting, facts that will help the voters make up their minds — which will work in our favor, because facts really do have a liberal bias. And we are really getting that — despite the fact that there is some residual friendliness towards McCain based on the McCain of 2000-2004. (Y’know, when Reid wanted to make him a Democrat and Kerry considered making him VP.)

But the fact is that the media has been where the majority of the anti-McCain stories have appeared first, and only later has it been picked up by the bloggers here. (Look back at the coverage here over the past few months and see how many stories Steve quotes come from a MSM source. The only major exception I can think of is the Hagee story which was blogger-led from the beginning.)

Yes, it is true that the media doesn’t hit them as hard as we would like, and maybe it is also true that they hit Obama harder. But when is the last favorable news you saw about the McCain campaign or about McCain? They may not hit the bad hard enough, but they are ignoring the good — if there is any good from that muddled mess that is McCain’s campaign.

Even the Washington TIMES has blasted McCain several times, including over Cindy’s tax returns and by breaking Gen. McPeak’s support of Obama. (It was hilarious to hear Michael Savage the other night — I don’t tune him in, his station drifts so I hear the occasional line when trying to listen to the Mets — say that “The Washington TIMES has now become part of the liberal media.”) Murdoch has even admitted he could live with an Obama Presidency.

All of which is — Lord help us — merely preliminary to my main argument.

Obama is going to win AT LEAST 435 electoral votes — and we will win 300 Congressional seats and have well over 60 Senators — for the following reasons:

The country is going through the strongest Democratic surge since the early FDR era — and this time without the Democratic support the “Solid (i.e., racist) South” provided. This is shown by polls, by voter registrations, and most of all by those incredible by-elections we won. (Remember that two of them were in seriously racist areas and the Republicans were going all out — and spending LOTS of money — trying to tie the Democrats to the ‘scary black man.’ It didn’t work. The other one was in the District that had previously sent the Speaker to the Congress — at a time when the Republicans didn’t want even a shaky district producing the Speaker because they remembered the black eye Tom Foley’s loss had given the Democrats. And all three weren’t even close.)

None of the Republican Candidates were able to connect with what remains of the Republican base — which is why I predicted a lock for the Democrat before I knew who the candidates would be. McCain in particular is totally clueless about the Religious Right — and shows it. (Those of you who are old enough will remember the time Lyndon Johnson tried to ‘reach out to the Youth of America by talking their language’ and how ludicrous that came across. But that is precisely the way McCain comes across to Religious Conservatives.) And the entire Republican GOTV strategy is based in the Churches. Yes, many of them will ‘hold their noses and vote for McCain’ but they aren’t going to be volunteering for him — and that is very important when we have supporters who are eager to man the phones and talk to neighbors about Obama.

The ‘gay issue’ has lost much of its potency. For two reasons. First because a good percentage of those who were stampeded to the polls by people yelling ‘the gays are coming, the gays are coming’ have discovered that many of the people doing the stampeding were gay themselves — and that even those who could never be suggested as being gay themselves had strong liasons with the gay community — see Santorum. Some of the more sophisticated of them might even have discovered how many Republican speech writers and political operatives were themselves gay.

But much more importantly, after four years of GSAs in school, gays on tv, and gays in the headlines, they simply aren’t that scary any more. The same way that Jackie Robinson changed many people’s minds about blacks simply by being who he was, so people like Ellen — and Portia — Melissa Etheridge, Elton, Judge Young, Neal Patrick Harris, George Takei, and others have made gays familiar and no longer shadowy, scary ‘sodomites.’ And the simple fact that Massachussets has had no problems from the gay marriages they have permitted makes even that ‘last line in the sand’ less strong.

The War is immensely unpopular — and Tom Cleaver is entirely right that we could win a number of states based on McCain’s anti-Veteran votes alone. (Unlike Vietnam, ‘anti-war’ hasn’t meant ‘anti-soldier’ this time. We respect the people over there, even as we condemn Bush for sending them.) People who have seen their children, neighbors, friends, or lovers go off to Iraq — not knowing if they would come back, or in what shape — are going to be DAMN resentful of these votes, of the ‘money-saving’ cutbacks on necessary equipment, of Walter Reed, of multiple terms and redefining illnesses, and every other way in which Bush and McCain have insulted the Vets. And remember that the majority of the white soldiers come from red states.)

Universal Health Care is such an important issue that even Mitsubishi is running an ad where a supposed Political candidate is stampeded into supporting their car, that America ‘deserves’ this vehicle — and the political candidate ends up by saying ‘yes, next to health care, America deserves…’ Obama’s position may not be ideal — and reality may move him to a Single-Payer system once he is in office — but McCain’s position is impossible.

The economy is in big trouble, with foreclosures, outsourcing, and all the rest. Mc”I don’t understand economics”Cain is not going to win many votes for his positions here either.

McCain’s age and the toll of his captivity is showing, and even the MSM is commenting on it. He isn’t a Reagan, or even a Dole, who could play the ‘vigorous, experienced Senior Citizen.’ He is simply an old man, and comes across that way. I wish obama had accepted the 13 debates, because every time they are seen together it shows McCain’s age more powerfully. (Remember the influence the Kennedy-Nixon debates had — and how different the response was between those who watched them and those who listened on radio.)

So, to finally come to a conclusion, given all of this, plus Obama’s willingness to — and resources to be able to – – fight EVERYWHERE, I don’t see how — barring blunders and surprises from the Obama camp that they have shown no likelihood of making — McCain can win more than 100 Electoral votes.

(And I’ve ignored the influence of Bob Barr. If he actually wages a serious campaign, he’ll be far worse for McCain than Nader was for Kerry — and may actually win more electoral votes than McCain.)

    Whew. Breath.

  • To Missmudd…you are right…oops I mean correct

    Quite funny Bubba.

I do think about freedom every single day but probably not in the terms you do. Even so, I’m quite certain the debates we have here and during this election we’ll make us all better Americans. I sure hope so.

    Audacious of me, yeah?

  • Joy—glowing happiness—hurrah, hurrah, and hurrah for the tinfoil-hatted, babbling trolls who have come out from their questionable little hiding holes to show—first-hand, of course—just how diseased the tribal followers of McMental-Misfit really are. All rumor, all disinformation, and all blatant, bald-faced lies.

I suppose they’ll start citing the “irrefutable, empirical evidence” of the ball-less little sissies over at RedState next—or the “superior intellect” of their precious, shrill little man-cub over at FOXnoise (the one that looks like the main course for a Hawaiian luau who does the 8PM weeknight slot)—or maybe they’ll just start quoting that feckless fool of an aviator who, oddly enough, got his butt shot down just as the inquiry into the Forrestal fire was gaining traction. A hero? More like a gambit to dodge facing a General Court.

“Wet Starts” are prohibited aboard carriers with one exception—an emergency order to get all planes aloft in the event of an incoming attack on the carrier itself. It’s reserved as a “launch-or-lose” action of last resort—and the last time that happened was in a little dust-up called World War Two, before the age of carrier-borne jet aircraft.

And the shouting; the slandering; the meaningless, intelligence-lacking drivel so prominently espoused by these cartoonish characters all links back to a mere handful of McLost-In-Lah-Lah-Land websites. The few who claim to be former Clinton supporters were—and continue to be—both phony Democrats, and phony Americans. They would surrender this Nation and all its citizenry to the failed policies of eternal war, compromised freedoms, and eternal surveillance.

It is they—the avaricious, dis-educated Mouths of McMonkey who would trade all for an empty promise of non-existent, manufactured “security”—and not the Liberal/Progressive Coalition of these United States of America, who are the true “surrender monkeys.”

Give them a banana, send them on their way, and fire up the grill. I understand that “Prime Rib au Knuckledragger” is a delicacy—but if it’s not, they can always be processed into pet food….

  • I am a registered Republican that has voted in all elections the last twenty or thirty years or so. Yes, I voted for W twice, his dad once, Reagan twice and for Carter once. This election I am inspired by Obama. I am not “feeling it” from McCain. If McCain picks Huck as his VP I will vote for the McCain/Huck ticket. But now that Huck has been hired as a Fox news person it seems he will not be on this year’s GOP ticket. My hopes (and vote) will be drawn to Obama.

Please, don’t anyone say “How could you a Republican, vote for a Democrat?” Um, try $4.59 a gallon gas last night here in SoCal. Somebody needs to bring hope to us common folk that are just trying to lead quiet, law-abiding and peaceful lives. Some might say Obama is just selling snake-oil like Carter did years ago, ie, all his promised claims are worthless. Well, that may be right, but with things the way they are now in the US, maybe we all need to be sold a little snake-oil to pick us up.

  • Harry Burton says: Obama believes that money grows on rich folks trees and that every one should be able to pick those trees.

Could you please give us more details about this notion, Harry and how you arrived at that conclusion? I’m just hoping he doesn’t make the poor folks poorer. Like me. You know? Like the last 7 years haven’t been good for me or my family. If you’ve profited somehow, I’m all happy for you and hope you’ll share your secrets with us sometime.

reaganw says: Some might say Obama is just selling snake-oil like Carter did years ago, ie, all his promised claims are worthless. Well, that may be right, but with things the way they are now in the US, maybe we all need to be sold a little snake-oil to pick us up.

Amen to that friend! SoCal never saw $4.00/gal – it went from $3.89 to $4.39 in a flash. If snake oil gets better gas mileage, well then sign me up!

  • Great post, prup@69. All those facts are true, but we – good Dems all – must fight like hell on the ground this year to insure an Obama victory, AND wins for those down ticket from Obama.

I repeat, this will not be a cakewalk.

  • Here’s how I would rate the possibilities of an Obama victory. I’d classify them in three ways, each more unlikely, but still possible, than the last. I’m going to start with John Kerry’s 252 Electoral votes as a baseline, with 270 obviously being the minimum even if exactly that number is impossible.

    1. Likely/A Good Performance

    270-322

This would give him some combination of, or possible all of the following, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri, and Virginia.

    2. Less Likely/A Great Performance

    322-375

This would give him all of the above states, plus possibly Florida, North Carolina or Georgia (but not both), and Arkansas.

    3. Unlikely/A Fantastic Performance

    375-450

This would give him all of the above states, including both North Carolina and Georgia, plus some very unlikely ones, like Texas, North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Kansas, and South Carolina. As I said, it’s very unlikely, but in the case that’s an absolute blowout, this is probably what it would look like.

But let’s go back to the first category. Let’s say, for whatever reason, he loses both Virginia and Missouri. He’s still at 298, which is a very good number. Let’s say he gets Virginia but loses Colorado. That would give him 302. The point is, in the first category alone, he has a lot of room for a very solid performance. Now, if he really has a solid edge in money in the fall and things aren’t going so well for McCain, assuming there are at least some favorable dynamics for him, I don’t see why it would be impossible for him to pick up an additional state or two.

Overall, you’d want to have his map, rather than McCain’s. Combined with his probable fund raising advantage and the overall dynamics of the race, a blowout doesn’t seem so far fetched.

  • To Prup – You’re right about the lack of respect McCain has for Vets. I especially worry about the young ones coming home and not having proper care as a “cost-savings” measure! We could take care of them with only a few weeks of the money we are spending in just Iraq. Not to mention he did not support the same GI Bill benefits that WWII Vets received, whilt Obama voted for it. The GI Bill was shown to have fantastic benefits for our economy back then. Why not now?

Look around you. The wealth of the average American is beingsiphoned off straight to the rich. Ask yourself who is making all the money from this war, the housing fiasco, and unregulated speculation, and you will see who the bad guys really are. .

  • Bubba at #53, fuck you. American unions helped build the middle class.
All your service did was prop up dictators and help the rich get richer. The last war to be fought for America’s freedom was WWII.
How does it feel to be used and then spit out?

  • phoebes: entirely agree, but implicit in my argument — and supported by the facts so far — is that Democrats WILL be working their butts off for Obama and the whole ticket…

    And that Republicans won’t.

  • If it’s not a blowout then Obama will make little real difference.
The blowout has to sweep an additional dozen or more D Senators and an additional 30-50 D Reps into office.
Anything less means he will only be a embattled placeholder pres till the next CEO pres takes over.

  • US voters respond to pain at the gas pump. US voters will want change in Washington. who represents change better than Obama? It looks like the American voter, called a moron by an earlier post, can be manipulated to vote one way or another.

George Soros, the billionaire founder of the liberal MoveOn.org organization has sworn his personal fortune to effect US politics.

Here is a direct quote from the Soros website: (http://www.soros.org/about/bios/a_soros)
“In 2003, Soros said that removing President George W. Bush from office was one of his main priorities. During the 2004 campaign, he donated significant funds to various groups dedicated to defeating the president.”

Could Soros be the one behind the rampant speculation in oil and gas futures that are pushing up the cost of a gallon of gas for the average American consumer? Wasn’t he just called before a Congressional hearing the other day? Wow! Are we Americans being manipulated by one guy?

    Could Soros, a known

  • WOW… what a bunch of hate mongers…. try to have a honest discussion with you folks and you get two standard answeres. BUSH LIED>>>>>> and YOU ARE A TROLL>>>>>you people are truly amazing… I once tried listening to your radio station and the same crap came out of their mouths … They couldnt say anything intelligent only hateful vile words……. of course they are off the air…That kinda of talk flies on these blogs , but not in the real world where it matters…. I guess this is a kind of intellectual masturbation…….that is why your party wont win…. not a chance… you have no solutions only empty promises and criticism… totaly divisive policy.. which apparantly is what you want. You are so hateful of losing any election that no matter what you prefer to see America torn down.. you relish when there are negativer reports from the war…you use these a milestones for your cause… I AM ASHAMED OF AMERICANS LIKE YOU!!!

  • UNION MEMBER: I love You TOO…….NOT>>>>>>you wonder why american cars are over priced and are pieces of crap well thank the union…..wonder why companies outsource to other countries…. well thank the unions…. why are steel prices through the roof…thank the unions….what has the mining union done for the poor unsafe conditions..nothing but take payolla…thank the unions…..maybe you should read your history books about the unions.. of course being a true liberal you will rewrite history to suit your selves…. Have a nice day…. ;-p

  • “Al Gore is at least 10 times smarter than George W. Bush”

Really ? Where does the figure 10 come from ? If this is true – why then did GWB get better grades at Yale, than Gore did at Harvard ? Go ahead, do the research – it’s undisputable fact.

Also – do me a favor will you ? Pretend Obama was white. What exactly, makes him anything other than an old schol liberal, with the highest liberal voting record in the senate ? What exactly is so “exciting” about Obama other than the fact that he’s half-black ? What has he accomplished ? What makes him so special, that he is making you gush like a schoolgirl wish a crush ? Remember – he’s white for this argument. So, what is it ?

  • Bubba doesn’t seem to be able to grasp the fact that imported parts are why American cars are overpriced pieces of crap.

Bubba doesn’t seem to be able to grasp the notion that one of the best cars in the US today is the Honda Accord—made in Marysville, Ohio and containing a higher percentage of American-made parts—manufactured from American steel, by the way—than any Ford, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Dodge, or Chrysler on the market today. Honda Ohio also manufactures the Gold Wing motorcycle and the Element light-duty truck—again, all with a higher percentage of American materials and parts than anything else. The Gold Wing even has a higher percentage of American parts in it than Harley Davidson—which ought to make any rednecked, down-the-rabbit-hole-for-McBetray-The-Whole-Damned-Country-for-Political-Gain-and-Profit Bubba break down in tears.

That is, if Bubba was a “real” American like those who are unwilling to sit back and surrender the Republic like the bunch of leather-winged, McBush-loving howler monkeys he so clearly wants to be like.

Bubba doesn’t know, obviously, that the Honda plant in Marysville is a unionized plant.

Bubba doesn’t have the cojones to own up to the fact that he doesn’t even understand the corporate-boardroom design behind outsourcing—or that over 85% of all jobs outsourced were non-union jobs in career-areas that had absolutely nothing to do with organized labor.

Bubba insults—repeatedly—but throws a caps-lock tantrum when people won’t play the game by his rules.

In short—Bubba excels at earning his name: Bubba….

  • OK I am done talking to you people…I only saw one rational leftist in the whole lot of you..(MissMudd)
    .
to finish off with my last post I will quote from BUZZ CLEARCUTT
    .
.”the problem is that liberals have no respect for tradition. To a liberal, it doesn’t matter if a custom has existed since the dawn of Western Civilization; they are willing to discard tradition like you or I would take out the trash, if they no longer find it personally gratifying. In defending our civilization from having its very foundations undercut, then, you will once again have to reinvent the wheel, doing the work – which the principle of division of labor has taught us is best left to experts – of rehashing history and explaining, slowly and carefully, just how it is that up is up, the sky is blue, and homosexuality is against God’s will.

Another common mistake is to assume that a liberal will know when he is beaten. You may think you have scored a clear victory by not only citing the appropriate authority on each matter but utterly humiliating the liberal in the process – and yet he will keep coming back for more punishment.

What you must understand here is that liberals have no sense of dignity. They are quite willing to be humiliated and taunted in the service of their righteousness. Crawling through slime and offal does not offend them; living the lives they do, of course, many of them are quite accustomed to it. ”
    .
.As a conservative, arguing with liberals must sometimes feel like a complete waste of time and energy. You can make your point over and over again and yet find the argument inevitably circling back to the same places for yet another round, as if you hadn’t said anything at all. It can be immensely frustrating. Yet I believe that a simple understanding of the different, “diverse” ways in which liberals think may be illuminating, and may come to the assistance of compassionate conservatives who believe in the importance of helping the liberal “mind” to gain a more fruitful relationship with reality.”

Ya All have a nice day now ya hear…. thanks Miss Mudd for the courtesy and your intelligence…
    Bubba Said That….

  • What a fascinating thread. I would kill to see CB’s blog stats. I wonder which RW site got its panties in a twist to send in the clowns. Some I think truly believe what they are saying (which is frightening enough). Others I think are nothing more than agent provocateurs.

Fight the Smear need just look to this thread to catch, what, 20-30 different baseless smears and ideologies which are so outside of what America once stood for.

When Fascism arrives it will be wrapped in a Flag and carrying a Bible. ~Sinclair Lewis

    Amen.

  • I am a democrat and I am voting for Obama.. I do think however Bubba makes a good point. Any response to any of his comments were met with hostility. Even profantity. No wonder we cant meet in the middle with the other side. The truth be known, most of the posts were pretty harsh. Although my opinions differ greatly from his, he is entitled to his opinion and we to ours. I think he had the calmer head and it seems like he was baiting a few of you who fell into the net. I hope the election is not going to all be like this, as I see the country torn in two. Worse than in years past. It scares me.

  • I used to joke that when Regan started to cut funds to social programs that cared for the mentally ill, assisted public school education and early childhood development, his purpose was to dumb down the population. By suppressing the population’s curiosity and therefore its ability to think critically , Republican’s would gain a more passive, gullible, easily manipulated population. Dumbing down is the best term for it.
Sadly, I was right on the money, judging by the myopic, mean spirited arguments of Bubba and his ilk. Bubba and his kind are the of the type who constantly vote against their best interests. “Massa can do no wrong and he just looking out for me and you” is the type of servant’s attitude held by those who get all their information from Fox News and The NY Post.
Thanks Steve @ #84 for bringing up the automotive facts that you cited. As a side note there is a resurgence of UAW organizing going on in that end of the industry. Maybe we are seeing baby steps being taken toward the eventual retaking of our country. People seem to be questioning the Republican bullshit more and more. I hope it continues.

  • “…Nothing would make me happier than an Obama blowout, and if that happens, I’ll gladly eat heaping amounts of crow. But let’s not start serving it up yet. If you want to win this thing, get to work.”””

It will be a landslide victory in spite of Rachael Maddow and others threatening a McCain victory as blackmail to manipulate others into behaving according to their ideas. If we nominated a dead guy it would still be a landslide victory due to the necessity of ending this republican disaster.

In a few months get your fork ready for heaping piles of crow and what is left of McCain’s balls.

  • Democrats have the shortest memories possible. This is not “new”. This is not a “defining moment”…Obama is nothing but a repeat of Carter’s failed platforms and policies, delivered by an empty suit motivational speaker.

And Dems just don’t see that.

  • If Reagan had not dismantled Carter’s energy independence programs, we would not be involved in this useless, illegal Iraq war.

  • I have to admit, the comment that morons elected Bush, I felt, was a bit uncalled for. Then I read the posts of the morons that decided to comment. Perhaps I was hasty in my judgment.

  • Well, NObama could win if we Americans are stupid enough AGAIN. Let’s face it bush was (s)elected to be (P)resident in our White House because enough of us were complete idiots not to see he is not qualified for the job. Same goes for NObama, except from the other end of the spectrum. If he was white he had never achieved this questionable nomination. Racists? Yes. 90 % of blacks voted for him in the primaries. Blacks are more racists than whites or hispanics. It is an understandable fact! However it does not and will not make NObama a good President. C’mon!!! The man has no exprience, questionable friends and business associates and we are yet hear his actual programs. Kucinich, Edwards or Hillary would have been good choices….. Now we are stuck with no true candidate, so what’s the difference? McCain or NObama? We will be screwed anyway.

  • Gee. A white woman can hope, can’t she? All I can say is that if McCain wins, I’m making fast plans to leave this country. Four more years of rising prices, facism, lying, corruption and war is too much for me. You can be sure McCain will bomb every country he can get his hands on and raise oil prices to unprecidented levels (we’ll be thinking that $5 a gallon was a bargain).

I trust Obama. I believe he’ll do the right thing. I do think he’ll win in a landslide. Anyone ever go see the crowds he attracts? The only people McCain attracts are religious fanatics, corporations, lobbyists, and those too ignorant to understand that we’re facing horrific times. Remember the $20 a barrel of oil was going to cost if Bush won? Yeah, right. Guess where the profits are. Hey, you vote for an oilman and then complain that we’re paying almost $5 a gallon. It’s like telling the fox to be a “good boy” and leave him guarding the chickens.

The Bush day’s are soon OVER. Let’s not bring them back, pleeeease. I like living here.

  • “Al Gore is at least 10 times smarter than George W. Bush”

Hell, Minnie Mouse is a MENSA member compared to numb-nuts.

  • In typical fashion, the liberal scrotal fungus that agrees with you hopes “the Republican will permanently disappear.” It is sad to see a bunch of societal parasites hoping that the party that represents people who actually will go away, leaving them free to siphon off the labor of others for their sustenance. A bunch of ignorant fascists who make me ill and disgusted at the direction this country is going.

Meanwhile, in a great country like this, an unqualified, racist ex-crack head Muslim Marxist pus pocket is the best the Socialists can offer.

I can only hope that Obama’s cigarette habit has done enough physical damage that he is no longer around come November.

  • I like how all the trolls are so nasty and demented that,
instead of ever being able to convince anyone, they just drive sane people away from them.

  • I’m not comfortable saying John McCain is “unfit for the White House.”

    It’s overkill.
We’ve survived Dubya for 8 years. America re-elected the feces-throwing primate.

When both sides sling this old saw around, neither gains credibility and maybe we’ll look more mature if we simply, accurately state that a third Bush term, courtesy of Johnny Gas-tax, will leave you feeling 50% more certain that “America is off on the wrong track.”

Isn’t that plenty of reason to take a pass on President “Ace” McCain?
