Barack, bowling, and blue-collar voters

Jonathan Cohn made an interesting observation today I hadn’t seen before.

For the last two weeks or so, as my colleagues can attest, I’ve been asking everybody I know whether they recalled ever seeing Barack Obama stand outside a factory and greet workers as they walk in for their shift. It’s one of, if not the, most cliched moments in politics. But I couldn’t recall Obama doing it — and neither could any of my colleagues.

Now, I hardly watch any television news, but that sounds right to me. But come to think of it, I can’t recall seeing Hillary Clinton or John McCain outside a factory, either. Maybe there aren’t enough factories anymore; maybe presidential campaigns have decided to embrace newer models of outreach.

But Cohn’s broader point is nevertheless compelling — Obama still isn’t doing as well with working-class, blue-collar white voters as with most other groups, and the more he does to try to connect with them, the better off he’ll be. With this in mind, Paul West had a report on Obama’s latest swing through Pennsylvania that’s worth reading.

On Saturday night, Barack Obama went bowling for the first time in 30 years.

Part of his new effort to get closer to working-class voters, the presidential candidate grabbed a bite at Altoona’s Original Texas Hotdogs, then strapped on a pair of size 13 1/2 shoes at Pleasant Valley lanes, to cheers from patrons. He never loosened his tie and the bowling wasn’t pretty — basketball’s his game — but from a public-relations standpoint, it was a ten-strike.

“Sen. Barack Obama makes a surprise visit to Altoona today,” the local CBS TV station announced during the NCAA basketball playoffs.

Catching up to Clinton in Pennsylvania still strikes me as unlikely, but intermixing 22,000-person rallies in State College and a game of bowling in Altoona strikes me as an inherently good idea.

What’s more, the article notes that Obama has been traveling by bus throughout Pennsylvania in as low key a manner as possible.

To promote his regular-guy themes, Obama is midway through a six-day bus tour that is taking him from one end of the commonwealth to the other, his longest campaign swing in a single state this year.

Rolling across the steep hills and narrow valleys of the western Pennsylvania countryside, his bus does not advertise its presence. There is not so much as an Obama bumper sticker, much less a campaign banner, on the outside of the rented luxury liner, named for Harry Truman by a Nashville firm that caters to celebrities.

The unmarked bus and somewhat stealthy nature of his campaign swing — many stops aren’t announced in advance — also reflect the highly nuanced Obama effort in this state…. Already, on his “road to change” tour, he’s dropped into sports bars, to sip a local brew, and mingled with steelworkers at plants outside Pittsburgh and in Johnstown.

In general, “stealthy” campaign swings and presidential campaigns don’t go together well, but Obama’s campaign is pretty clever. The blue-collar white voters Obama and his team are trying to reach aren’t impressed with huge rallies or glitzy caravans, so the campaign is going in a decidedly low-key direction.

Cohn argues, persuasively, that this may very well be part of a conscious effort to “downplay the idea that Obama is a rock star — and his campaign a phenomenon — and concentrate instead on his credentials as somebody who cares about, and is committed to helping, working class voters.”

My hunch is it’s too late to propel Obama to victory in Pennsylvania’s primary, but it’s a good idea anyway.

This is just more proof that he’s a black huckster trying to steal votes that are rightfully Hillary’s. Hillary happens to be an expert bowler, but no one gives her credit for it because she’s a woman and women are supposed to sit there and mark the score sheet and fetch beers for the boys. Just like a typical man, Mr. Smooth Cheeks Obama comes along and tries to take another accomplishment from her when he should be the one begging for the honor of getting her a brewski.

  • Well said, Insane Fake Professor!

Now, can you tell us what it was like living in Chicago in 1930? I hear the city was 600% black back then!

  • With all due respect and apologies to Former Dan, I was inspired:

How many lanes must Obama roll down
Before you can vote for him?
Yes, ‘n how many strikes must his ball knock ’round
    Before donations come rollin’ in?
Yes, ‘n how many times must he get high fives
    Before he’s President?
The answer, my friend, is bowlin’ in the end,
The answer is bowlin’ with my friends.

  • Barack bowling badly in a suit and tie will probably go down as well in Altoona as Kerry ordering swiss on his cheesesteak did in Philly.

  • How was it? It was extremely black, TR. You have no idea, because all you want to do is trash and mock me, how discomfiting it was to see a black person every time I turned around. You think I don’t know what that means? I have read your Mr. DuBois and your Mr. Wright. I have even watched Good Times. Don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about. Come back when you understand women half as well as I understand African Americans.

  • This post hit a pet peeve with me.

As a member of the electorate, I can say with confidence that we’re idiots. If we decide to support a candidate because he or she takes the time to roll a ball down an wooden lane for the cameras, then it’s no wonder that our country is in trouble.

    It’s the issues, stupid.

  • There was a hilarious video of Hillary greeting workers going to work in a factroy. She was surrounded by a ton of flacks. And it showed the total time she was off her bus was last then five minutes.

    Because she cares so much.

just goes to show you can’t make a sow’s ear out of a silk purse.

  • I heard that he refused to pay for the shoe rental and then he made up stories that he bowled a 300.

    Oh wait, that was Clinton.

  • DON’T BE DUPED !!!

Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.

But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. “Carpe diem” (harvest the day).

I think Hillary Clinton see’s a beautiful world of plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it’s time America. Do this for your-selves, and your children’s future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.

You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don’t want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care that you have already paid for. So they can continue to make more immoral profits for them-selves.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama’s primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.

Hillary Clinton has been out manned, out gunned, and out spent 2 and 3 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON’T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton’s offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama’s place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.

The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.

Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.

“This is not a game” (Hillary Clinton)

    Sincerely

    jacksmith…

  • YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary’s than they had ever been before or since.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. 🙂

    Best regards

    jacksmith…

Caucuses are undemocratic and BOGUS! And Texas proves it.

  • Excellent story, Insane Fake Professor. I am impressed at your repeated references that you have read DuBois, though I remain confused as to just what that has to do with this year’s election.

I have a friend who majors in Foreign Policy and is interested in becoming a Roades Scholar. Do you have any advice for him?

  • hey, copy&paste jacksmith is back! depleted clinton coffers can only afford hillbots now?

  • And who ever said that they’re not going to vote for Obama because they hate bowling… lol… funny. Grow up.

And yes I would appreciate it if the original poster did a tad bit more research before they post “fuckery” (for lack of a better, more fitting word)

Let’s get it together people. Love Obama/Hillary or Hate them… for the policies that they promote b/c they ultimately will affect you when/if they become president. Who cares if he bowled, or ate a damn cheese steak, unless he’s going around calling people Nigger’s, Spicks, and Crackers leave the man be. Just vote people that’s what matters most! And for you feminists, just because Hillary is a woman doesn’t mean that she should be president. I hope that you young minded fools get your priorities in order.

It’s about what’s best for the majority of the country. It is that lack of camaraderie, that hubris that has the US in its current predicament. Remember who is president now? Why did people vote for him again? I will admit that I am new to voting. This will be my first year. I was 10 when Bush came into office 8yrs ago. So forgive me if i do not know. But I hope, deeply hope, that it wasnt becasue people liked the way he “bowled” or smiled while “bowling”… =)

  • Heck, he should join a bowling league. Yeah, just think what his handicap would do for some lucky team 😉

  • jacksmith

You forgot to mention how Hilliary can keep her cool under sniper fire. Not just that, but without her Husband being there (which seems to saturate your assessment of her qualifications and expereince).

Also, would you say a once lawyer turned career politician (Hilliary) has a better grasp of the Constitution (you know, the thing Presidents swear to uphold) than a former professor/senior lecturer at one of the most prestigious law schools in the country (Obama)?

Just curious to hear your $0.02

    -MDK

PS: Call me crazy, but I prefer a candidate that is capable of keeping their campaign solvent without short changing vendors and loaning themselves their own money.

  • You Might Be An Idiot!
If you go by the name ‘jacksmith’ and you are using dimwitted, quasi-redneck humor from the 80’s as a liberal cover. Next time wow us with your NASCAR trivia, trust me, that will work better then a Professor with a lame Foxworthy bit.

Ever get the feeling you are too stupid to realize just how stupid you really are ? And annoying.

Back to the post, I saw a clip of Obama on a tractor yesterday. He was in a factory no less.

I suspect her is getting ready for the general election. He doesn’t need PA, but there are going to be some blue collar states that ride the fence and what better time to kick around a few new tactics. Plus it can not hurt in the GE, it’s not just PA watching.

  • Actually I disagree that it is too late. Obama is smart to do this. It shows he “listens” thus respects the opinions of the blue-collar workers enough to do a bus-tour without the super-star status.

He is talking to the people, introducing himself, giving them a chance to get to know him up close and personal will have an effect. Whether that translates into votes who knows, but I believe it will at the very least narrow Hillary’s wide lead in Pa. And that is all he really needs to do anyhow because no matter how you slice and dice it, mathematically Hillary cannot win the nomination even with Florida and Michigan added in. Iam not suggesting she drop out by any means, she has every right to continue.

[not counting Florida and Michigan as it stands:]

    Obama has won 13 caucuses.
    Hillary: 3

    Obama has won 27 states
    Hillary: 14

Obama: 1631 delegates and Super Delegates
    Clinton: 1501

    Clinton: 250 Super Delegates
    Obama: 217

    Obama: 13,376,375 popular vote:
    Clinton: 12,634,857

The 2nd [out of 3-tier] Texas district/county convention gave Obama another win on Saturday. Obama won 52% to Hillary’s 41%. The state convention third-tier will finalize the process this summer.

So add Texas into the fray and what has Hillary got left? Super Delegates. Obama picked up 63 or so since Super Tuesday and Clinton less than 10. There are approximately 335 Super Delegates left.

She will more than likely win Pa., but No Carolina will probably cancel out that win providing Obama’s wide lead continues to hold.

Hillary needs to win by 65 % – 70 % or better in the remaining states. Other than that or unless the Super Delegates vote against the candidate with the popular vote and the most delegates Hillary’s chances of pulling off a win are slim at best. In order for her to convince the Supers to vote for her, HRC must convince them that Obama is unelectable — the likelihood of that happening, barr some drastic altercation on Obama’s part, would be next to impossible.

Nothing is encased in stone. The one thing that remains constant is change.

  • I’m betting that #12 and #13 has changed — to Smith — his name recently. From Schitt. And, for the record, I don’t think Insane Fake Professor (#1 & #6) *is* Mary, even though “it” uses the same “arguments” and vocabulary that Mary did. But Mary didn’t have any sense of humour, and IFP does…

  • Jack, you ARE an idiot because you seem to think that Hillary and Bill are interchangeable. Was Bush 41 interchangable with Bush 43? Give me a break and just do a write-in for Bill since that’s who you really want.

  • For some not great quality video of Obama in Harrisburg:http://pennsylvaniaprogressive.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/03/obama-harrisbur.html

It continues on from there into many parts — I believe this is all in the Q and A part, though since I only watched some of the clips in the bigger numbers, I can’t swear it! You can click through them at the top.

If he could spend enough time in PA, I’m pretty sure he’d win. Hillary’s support here is pretty rote — people are used to being loyal, the Democratic machine is truly a machine, and people vote for what they know. If they get to know him better… Not sure if he can spend enough time here, but the only excited people I see are for Obama. Signs here in Pittsburgh are running easily 10-15 to 1 in his favor (and that’s generous).

  • He never loosened his tie and the bowling wasn’t pretty — basketball’s his game — but from a public-relations standpoint, it was a ten-strike.

    Bowling in a suit?

I love the man,… but what a dork.

It’s not posing-in-a-tank or Bush-in-a-flight-suit level of jive, but c’mon, Barak. Lose the tie and coat when you’re on the lanes, huh?

You got mongo pit stains or sumpin’?

  • Of course he can improve in Pennsylvania, with the massive help he’s getting from the msm. They support him because he’s the weakest candidate and will be the most easily derailed in office. For now, we have an ace in the hole: that most people know the war is a mistake. It should be enough to elect our candidate. It won’t be enough for Obama to deliver on his feel good rhetoric. Once Hillary is out of the way, the smears will start. Once the war is settled, we’ll loose congress. Obama will have been wasting time on his stupid promises, and we’ll loose the presidency. This will be the second time the far left has royally screwed us dry. It’s not clear if the party will recover in our lifetime.

Uhh, I meant it’s generous to her.

  • –with the massive help he’s getting from the msm–

Yeah, right. You mean like the photo on the cover of Saturday’s NYT? I couldn’t believe my eyes when the husband showed me (he’s been bucking to ditch the subscription, he was pretty sure this was his ace in the hole.) Look at this picture and see what impression you get:

    NYT cover Saturday

Gosh, sure looks like this is a Clinton town, right? What you don’t know from that picture is that the photographer had to be standing directly in front of a huge crowd of people — and that the Hillary grouping you see there is the extent of it — all 15-20 of them — look closely and see how spaced apart they are.

Check out this person’s picture of part of the line. It extended around the corner and around the next corner; even after the doors opened two hours prior to the event it kept growing (it was a ticketed event, so all these people had gotten tickets before this…mostly by waiting in line for that too). The people on the sidewalk in front are directly across from the Clinton folks across the 5-lane street.

Here’s a picture of the totality of the Clinton supporters with a little more perspective given.

(I was there but those are not my pictures, I stupidly left my camera at home!)

Yeah, that’s right, they MSM is shilling for him. Yup.

The local paper (Post-Gazette, not Scaife’s Tribune-Review) described the event as a “revival” and gave no details of what he talked about. I made my 14 and 17 yo read the press coverage so they could compare what they saw and heard and what was reported. Both were pretty amazed at what was left out and how things were spun. At least they’re learning to be cynical.

  • I have a friend who majors in Foreign Policy and is interested in becoming a Roades Scholar. Do you have any advice for him?

What would a man understand about Foreign Policy other than war and hostility and protecting the power of other men? Women are the world’s relationship builders, the silken thread that ties together countries, a soft yet tenaciously strong bond. We are the ones who do the work that keeps the globe turning. If more women got the credit they deserved for their accomplishments, the 3 a.m. phone calls would all be about yummy pizzas instead of a bunch of men in the middle east making more war, as men do. A phone ringing in Barack Obama’s house at that hour most likely means another relative has been arrested.

As for Roads Scholars, it’s a proven fact that 79 percent of Rodes Scholarships rightfully belong to women who have earned them, and they are cheated out of most of them by men who know how to hustle the committee with smooth talking. So I’m not too impressed with Rods Scholars unless they’re married to strong and courageous women who never give up. Then they’ll probably be all right with supervision.

  • Rod Scholars. Heheheheh.

She came on to him, okay? Can’t you understand that Hillary was the victim in all that?

  • Insane Fake Professor: I have a ome-word review for your efforts:

    Beautiful.

When one can do satire such that some readers don’t see it, one is working at a very high level indeed. I doff my hat to a master.

  • Thanks for answering my last question, Insane Fake Professor!

I have another one, if you don’t mind. You’ve noted that it’s improper to compare a childish boy like Obama to a president like John F. Kennedy – and as someone who’s read both Malcolm X and DuBois, and also skimmed a Wikipedia entry on JFK, you’re clearly one to judge.

But what about Hillary Clinton? What historical figures come the closest to measuring up to her incredible awesomeness?

(If you must use a man, you may compare our Lord and Savior to Jesus Christ.)

  • But what about Hillary Clinton? What historical figures come the closest to measuring up to her incredible awesomeness? — TR, @36

Not fair. All of us know that women had been left behind when history (and even fiction) was written, so the pool of comparisons is, necessarily, inadequate.

I am no IFP, but I’ll try to give you an example of a high-achieving female who might be comparable to Clinton: Marie Sklodowska-Curie. Her first Nobel Prize was shared with her husband and she was accused of riding his coat-tails to achieve it, and she was accused of being a trophy wife (young, Polack, blonde) as well. But she got the next Nobel Prize all for herself (after pushing her husband under an omnibus).

So, OK. So, it’s not a *perfect* parallel… But I’m sure that misogynist tendencies in US of mid-twentieth century were much stronger than the misogynist tendencies in France of late 19th century, which makes their achievements about equal…

  • Excellent suggestion, Libra. Curie was killed by radiation poisoning, which, as anyone who’s read DuBois knows, is a sexist form of scientific oppression.

We’ll have to see if IFP agrees, but I’m worried that he/she might take April Fool’s Day off as a personal holiday.

  • When have women ever had holidays? Holidays are for men who think that work gets done, children get cared for, “When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple” plaques make themselves and phones get answered magically while guys are sitting around high-fiving each other on how they’ve squashed a brilliant woman who has earned the right to be president. What happened to Marie Curie is a crime, but no surprise. The bias continues in the hateful Democratic Party. But there’s a rude surprise for those of you who think your golden boy will automatically get the vote of women. There is a place for us in the Peace and Freedom Party and you are going to see a positive cavalcade of us heading there. You did it to yourselves, fellows.

  • It is unbelievable how blown out of proportion Hillary’s exaggeration of the sniper fire in Bosnia sniper fire has gotten. Obamabots PAY ATTENTION the fact that she exaggerated the danger ( and admitted and apologized for it) does NOT MEAN she wasn’t in danger! She WAS, there WERE SNIPERS in the surrounding hills near the airport they had SHARPSHOOTERS positioned all around the airport and she was flon in a combat bulletproof plane and ordered to don their flak jackets. The ceremony WAS CUT SHORT and limited to the little girl rather than the full military show that was scheduled. How two faced of you to defend Wright because you claim the snippet of video takes his racist and anti American comments “out of context” ( which is ridiculous, there is NO context where his statements can be justified) yet you take a snippet of video that does NOT SHOW her negotiations with the Bosnian leaders, doesn NOT show her work in getting the Albanians through the border and does not show how she came home and got them the money they needed to help them once they were free? Your double standards of over scrutinizing Hillary and IGNORING all the glaring problems with Obama and his associations with criminals and racists is obvious.

  • serena

Caucuses are UNDEMOCRATIC and Obama KNEW it which is why he had students bussed in to DISRUPT the caucuses and INTIMIDATE Clinton voters. If not for the caucus votes, Obama would NOT have the SLIGHT ( only 1%) advantage over Hillary and he would NOT have more delegates. The only DEMOCRATIC votes, one person one vote are the Primary votes not caucus votes.
Obama is a very dirty politician who has been dirty dealing in the Chicag political scene and worked in the COMBINE! Talk about dirty back room dealings! You should educate yourself and not fall for his lie that he is some new kind of politician. He is as old school and dealing as they come. This will all come out in the Rezco trial, why do you think Obama has a representative SITTING IN THE COURTROOM every day at the Rexco trial? Because he knows all his dirty deals with the GOVERNOR and Emil JOnes will be exposed.
