Biden looking ahead

It’s still ridiculously early, and most likely candidates have barely gotten past the imagination stage, but we should all keep an eye on Delaware’s Joe Biden for 2008. My friend Poppy tuned into Imus and got the scoop.

On Imus this morning, Joe Biden said that he is “proceeding as if I am running” for President, but that he had not made up his mind completely.

I’ve always liked Biden a lot, so I’m pleased to hear he’s moving ahead with this.

Some of you may recall that Biden’s first presidential run came in 1988, which may lead you to wonder if he’d be prohibitively old to run in 2008. He’s not. When he ran in the ’88 primaries, he was just 46 years old, which is almost-ridiculously young for a presidential candidate.

How could he run so young? Well, he had already been in the Senate for 16 years before launching his ’88 presidential campaign. (Those of you doing the math are right — Biden was just barely 30 when he was sworn in as a senator in 1972.) As a result, if Biden does run in ’08, he’ll be 66. No spring chicken, but hardly too old to run.

Yet another name to keep in mind.
