Bill Bennett to CNN

Rumor has it that conservative radio talk-show-host and best-selling compiler Bill Bennett will soon join CNN as a political analyst. Oh, where to begin.

The natural thing to recall is that Bennett made national headlines a few months ago when he declared on his radio program that if “you wanted to reduce crime … if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down.” There was considerable debate about whether his comments were taken out of context, but the controversy surrounding the remarks led to widespread denunciations, including from the Bush White House.

Before this brouhaha, Bennett’s last major contribution to the political world was news that the nation’s virtue czar had a gambling problem. (In the wake of the controversy, Bennett said his “gambling days are over,” though he later amended that to say “the excessive gambling is over.”)

But perhaps the most disconcerting aspect to Bennett moving to CNN is the questionable journalistic integrity he showed while working as a commentator for Fox News. Bennett would appear regularly on all of the major FNC programs and consistently, as one would expect, defended the Bush administration. Unfortunately, Bennett never disclosed the fact that his primary business venture at the time was on the administration’s payroll.

Money from a federal program intended to expand public school choice has instead been used to prop up a scheme cooked up by William J. Bennett to boost home schoolers in Arkansas, Education Week has reported.

Newspaper staffers David J. Hoff and Michelle R. Davis report that a for-profit firm called K12, Inc., run by former Education Secretary and “drug czar” Bennett, has received $4.1 million from the U.S. Department of Education…. One department employee involved in the process, who wished to remain anonymous, told Education Week, “Anything with Bill Bennett’s name on it was going to get funded.”

Possible corruption aside, as far as journalism is concerned, the problem was one of disclosure. Bennett was on the administration’s payroll while appearing on TV offering commentary about the same administration. A minimum standard of journalistic ethics suggests viewers should have been made aware of Bennett’s possible conflict of interest.

Bill Bennett seemed to believe he could secure a lucrative Bush administration contract — under suspicious circumstances — one day, then turn around and offer analysis of the administration as a political pundit the next. As long as viewers were none the wiser, Bennett figured, there’s no conflict.

And now Bennett appears poised to bring this same level of ethical, professional commentary to CNN. Great.

It certainly wouldn’t surprise me. CNN, along with MSNBC, are the worst excuses for news organizations I’ve ever seen.

  • I am not thinking that exchanging Novak for Bennett is such a good deal. Once again CNN shows that the fools are in charge.

  • from the AUSCS article: “Department employees who oversee the public school choice program initially suggested funding for 10 programs, basing their decision on recommendations from peer reviewers. Bennett’s K12 Arkansas project was not among them. Education Week reported that K12’s proposal did not score high enough among the peer reviewers to win a funding recommendation.”

and: “While students in Arkansas’ under-funded public schools go begging, the youngsters taking part in the K12 experiment enjoy computer instruction and step-by-step lessons plans for parents to follow.”

It’s so hard to try to make my brain go where these guys live. They are the scum of the earth. A snake oil salesman might as well be Miss Manners compared to the underhanded, hypocritical, self-rightous mongrels that are wasting time, money and minds on the right. Karma doesn’t have to get these f**kers in my lifetime but what they’re doing is going to bring dark days down on everything around them at some point. Bill Bennett and his cronies are completely two faced. Utterly corrupt. Absolutely oblivious to their own self-rot.

  • What is the so-called “NEWS” coming to???
If it wasn’t for some creditable “BLOGS” out their telling us the fact,.everyone would be brainwashed like the diddoheads at Fox-news.

Its a sorry state of affair with no end in site.

  • A good example of corporate controlled news. Were it not for the Internet, no true information would get out to the people. The TV has become the Talking Idol for mainstream Americans and they believe everything they hear…especially the FOX NEWS dittoheads.
FOX is not broadcast in Europe except by satalite as their disinformation is far blatent for the intelligent Europeans. Only fool Americans embrace such rubbish.
CBS is being swallowed by Fox. MSNBC is poor, except for Keith Obermann, and CNN breeds Corporate Cooperation. The only independant TV news media left in the San Francisco Bay Area is KRON. PBS sold out for federal money some time ago, The only hope is the Internet and bloggers like Carpetbagger.
    Happy New Year.

  • Is CNN trying to become Fox News 2? Or are they trying to curry some sort of favor with the Bush administration? Are they feeling shut out of the access now enjoyed by Fox?

This guy is not a political analyst. He’s a shill for the right.

  • Lets not forget who Bill Bennett’s brother is… That would be Bob Bennett, the lawyer for New York Times’ reporter Judith Miller.

  • Why are we surprised the MSM hires biased reporters? We cannot trust ANYthing that comes out of the MSM. If you aren’t cross checking your information with sources outside the US and outside the mainstream you can be sure you aren’t getting the truth. Even then. The truth is…we don’t know the truth: we are manipulated, lied to, and exploited. Wake up.

  • Happy New Year!!!!

We should (I will) email whomever the “liberal” that is supposed to be the opposite of Bennett on whatever show, and ask them to phrase their questions thusly:

“What do ya wanna BET that…”?

“What are the ODDS of …”?

    “If I was a BETTING man …”

    etc, etc, etc

Every time Mister Morality is on, he will be reminded of his reputation as Jackpot Bill Bennett as the (cough) “debate” ensues.

  • As one would assume, Diane’s comment must include Fox News NOT being considered a news channel at all and at least MSNBC has Obermann. Bennett’s a racist and a narcissist who spews B.S. like he goes through money at the race track. Just like the rest of the Right Wing Hate Machine, he never apologizes or admits a mistake. A Mistake? What’s that? He makes me want to puke and unless CNN’s plan is to get him on so they can actually challenge his one-sided views and humiliate him publicly, I’m left to cast them aside with all the other Right-Wing Ass Kissers in the MSM. To CNN, Good Night, and Good Luck.

  • Ô Great Bagging Bagger of the Baggosity of Bagged Carpets,

Ye shall not spawn comments upon the sorry case of William John Bennett!

    Ye shall not!

Only the Rude One has the appropriate mastery of the appropriate vocabulary to deal with said Bennett. Anything else is doomed to fail.

  • Having no trouble mixing prejudicial racial stereotypes with social sceince theories, Mr. Bill Bennett explaimed “if you aborted all the black babies – i’m not saying you should but if you did – there would be a decrease in crime.”

Then, in rsponse the cries of outrage he said, “I’m not prejudiced…” it was merely an intellectual word game, a point I argued in the absurb…

    …except of course the conclusion.
