Bob Jones Univ. isn’t anxious to invite John Kerry to campus

Remember last week when I mentioned that Senator and presidential candidate John Kerry would love to speak to Bob Jones University? Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

BJU spokesperson Jonathan Pait said, “Is he crazy?”

The Kerry campaign has reiterated that the candidate would welcome the opportunity to address the students and faculty and “challenge the university on some of the beliefs that it has that don’t belong in our society.”

The fact that the candidate openly admits he wants to go to BJU to criticize makes the likelihood of an invitation next to impossible. While Pait said the school has not ruled out inviting Democratic presidential candidates, Kerry’s motivation would cause BJU to “roll up the welcome mat.”

“Why would we invite someone to come and speak for the purpose of re-enforcing the misrepresentations that have been generated about us?” Pait said.

Meanwhile, at least one Dem candidate can keep his fingers crossed for an invitation from the controversial university. Pait said a quick survey of the Democratic field doesn’t reveal any candidates who share the school’s “ideology,” but he said Joe Lieberman “would be the closest” — which only goes to show why Democratic primary voters must say no to Joe.
