Ordinarily, the president resists acknowledging the “bubble” that shields him from dissent, opposition, and reality, but yesterday, Bush said he actually welcomes the opportunity to enjoy life outside the bubble. Unfortunately, it’s under extremely limited circumstances.
“For me, this is a chance to feel like I’m outside the bubble…. I get the sense of freedom,” [Bush] said.
And what was it Bush was describing? Under what conditions will this carefully-shielded president finally step out of his bubble?
When he rides his bicycle.
The “outside the bubble” quote was Bush talking to Sal Ruibal, a sportswriter for USA Today, who accompanied the president on a mountain bike ride around Bush’s ranch in Crawford.
The comments actually offer some insight into Bush’s approach to public discourse. Will the president step outside his bubble to talk about the war with a grieving parent? No. Will the president step outside his bubble to talk to Americans concerned about the future of Social Security? No. Will the president step outside his bubble to talk to voters in a presidential campaign who haven’t already sworn allegiance to him personally? No.
Bush will, however, allow a sports reporter to join him for a bike ride.
Way to break out of your comfort zone and experience freedom, Mr. President.
