By Coburn’s logic, shouldn’t we all have breast implants?

There’s plenty of debate in health care circles about the seriousness of the threat posed by silicone breast implants. There have been lawsuits over alleged plots from manufacturers to hide dangers from women, and there have also been independent reports indicating that the implants pose some risks, but are not responsible for major diseases.

But then there’s newly-elected Sen. Tom Coburn (Loony-Okla.), an obstetrician by trade, who offers his own unique insight into the controversy.

[P]hysician-Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), a new member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was at last week’s meeting on a bill restricting class-action suits. “You know,” he said, “I immediately thought about silicone breast implants and the legal wrangling and the class-action suits off that.

“And I thought I would just share with you what science says today about silicone breast implants. If you have them, you’re healthier than if you don’t. That is what the ultimate science shows. … In fact, there’s no science that shows that silicone breast implants are detrimental and, in fact, they make you healthier.”

Some say the implants are dangerous, others disagree. Who’s right? I haven’t the foggiest idea. But to hear Sen. Coburn tell it, silicone breast implants are a way to make someone healthier. Never mind the debate over risks, Coburn says; these implants offer protection against illness. Hell, hearing him tell it, I’m wondering why I don’t have silicone breast implants right now — and I’m a guy.

Just think, Coburn’s Senate career is just starting. This guy will truly be the gift that keeps on giving.
