This week’s edition features two emails I received in response to the release of Bush’s PDB from August 6, 2001.
First, Carpetbagger regular Joe Fitzpatrick noted:
I saw this in response to the recent PDB release:
“James R. Thompson, a former Illinois governor (R), said the memo “didn’t call for anything to be done” by Bush.”
No underling told Condi to “do” anything either.
Presumably, what we really need is some gung-ho underling to put the word “resign” in the recommendations section of a briefing…
Good point. If all the key players are so anxious for word on what they’re supposed to do when they receive an intelligence briefing, I’m sure we could up with a number of helpful suggestions.
Similarly, another regular, whom I call Gary, noted the problem with the PDB was its lack of specificity. Gary recommended an open letter:
Dear Mr. Bin Laden,
As should be painfully apparent to you by now, our entire Executive Branch is either hopelessly out of touch or criminally stupid. Or both. Pursuant to this fact, we’d like to request that the next time you attack, you instruct your communications team to include date, time, location, and weapons type in their chatter. Apparently, in past communications, phrases like ‘hijack airplanes’, ‘New York City’, and ‘tall buildings’ just didn’t ring enough bells.
Thank you,
America
