CBC Institute/Fox News debate cancelled

For reasons that I’ve never fully understood, the Congressional Black Caucus Institute ignored concerns and decided to partner with the Fox News Channel for a Democratic presidential candidates’ debate. The consequences were swift — five candidates (Clinton, Edwards, Obama, Dodd, and Richardson) all announced they would skip the event to avoid legitimizing a partisan propaganda outlet. Thanks to concerns from Howard Dean, the Democratic National Committee said it could endorse an event co-sponsored by the GOP’s network.

As of this morning, officials said the event may be “postponed” due to “scheduling difficulties.” Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who chairs the CBC Institute, said it had nothing to do with candidates avoiding his event like the plague, and everything to do with the fact that “logistics” became awkward in light of the “overwhelming number of party presidential debates.”

By this afternoon, the event was scrapped altogether.

Fox News and a black political group say they will not hold a Sept. 23 Democratic presidential debate in Detroit, which the leading candidates already were planning to skip. […]

“Revisiting the CBC Institute’s debate schedule will allow the time necessary to complete all debate logistics in an effective manner,” [Thompson] said. The group had said it planned to sponsor two Democratic and two Republican presidential debates.

Due respect, congressman, logistics aren’t the problem. You can revisit the debate schedule as long as you’d like, but unless Fox News decides to become a legitimate news outlet, candidates won’t show up for the event.

The netroots worked awfully hard on this; the result is encouraging.

Of course the Republicans will lie and say the Democratic candidates are racist, and the “liberal” media bobbleheads will repeat the lie and act like they’re not responsible for their repetition of bullshit.

Fortunately, very few people are buying either of those groups’ bullshit anymore, and most people are ready to flush anyone with an R by their name down the nearest toilet. Assuming Diebold can’t switch enough votes, we might just be rid of those bastards for awhile.

  • the Democratic National Committee said it could endorse an event co-sponsored by the GOP’s network.

I think you are missing a “not” in that sentence: as in “…the DNC said it could *not* endorse…”

  • I guess the RNC is now justified in “not endorsing” a future debate on PBS. Looks like everybody wants home field advanatge these days.

  • Glad that Fox News isn’t getting any more of a chance to exploit the CBC Institute for cover.

It was unfortunate that anyone ever started planning this.

You do know that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been under the control of this rabid right wing administration for over 6 years now. If PBS was ever liberal, it certainly isn’t now. But probably the Rethugs would still like to think it is–since “facts have a well-known liberal bias.”

That’s a laugh. Like PBS needs RepubCo’s attendance to provide some sort of legitimacy to itself. Legitimacy, or the lack thereof, is Focks’ cross to bear. Focks could use some help breaking out of it’s niche audience of Shrub worshipers who believe in a flat, 6,000 year old earth.

If PBS said they were going to have a debate featuring the top tier of RepubCo candidates and the RNC catapulted the B.S. that they felt they were going into hostile territory and they weren’t going to do it, you know what? Nobody but themselves would give a damn. You would hear, “So what”, in as many languages as there are on the earth and all of the candidates would retreat to Focks to reaffirm their relevance to themselves.

There is no great curiosity in this country to hear what RepubCo has to say. Can you imagine where RepubCo would be right now without Murdoch and Focks which pushes RepubCo’s junk relentlessly? America heard what RepubCo had to say for almost 7 years and it was lame. Bush speaks for RepubCo every day. When Clones Debate! Could they really call it “Live”.

I will be amazed if they do the YouTube debate. Floored. Flabbergasted. The offer is there but I bet they chicken out. Again. They did once already. And they moved it 43% of a Friedman Unit away which was safe enough to claim it was in sight but not so close that they have to actually think about it for a few weeks. And then it’s gonna scare the hell out of them again and they’ll be begging for a slot on something kind and gentle like PBS.

  • You know why there’s all this talk of bombing Iran? Because the YouTube debate is coming and RepubCo would rather start another war than do a YouTube debate. Nuclear strikes on Tehran vs. questions from a snowman. Shit, that’s a no brainer. And that’s why it’s so appropriate for RepubCo. No Brainer. No Brains. Get it?

The snowman hates America. RepubCo hates the snowman. So we bomb Iran. It’s that simple. We’ll melt them there so we don’t have to melt them here.

RepubCo should take YouTube questions while standing in a market in Baghdad. Now that would be hilarious. I’d sign up for cable just to watch that.

RepubCo. Debate. The more you think about it in any location or setting, the more ludicrous it gets.

These people will feel justified in not endorsing anything that isn’t already stacked in their favor (see their need to create ‘Conservapedia’ and ‘QubeTV’ because of their paranoia that somehow their counterparts are controlled by some vast left-wing conspiracy). PBS has a long history of being fair handed politically and socially. Moreover, you can add “politically correct” to that now as they have bent over backwards in recent years to be “fair” to the warped ideology of Neoconservatism that has been thrust upon us (just like the rest of the “liberal” media).

And it bears repeating (assuming this gets pointed out on a regular basis):

The very concept of media/freedom of the press is inherently libertine. It boggles my mind why right-wingers (who have all but proven that they are authoritarian and anti-democratic) even bother with news of anything that isn’t completely prurient, voyeuristic or unimportant. They are willing to give up all of their civil liberties (not the least of which is the “right to know”) to imbue their leaders with greater authority. An important feature of this authority is the ability to act without having to answer to the public (Just what are we doing in Iraq? And why?).

JRS Jr., you are obviously an intelligent and (usually) level headed voice in an otherwise progressive-dominated blog. For that, I applaud you and have defended you (and I will again, I’m sure). I even sometimes get the impression from you that there’s hope for those poisoned by rhetoric and propaganda. But then you reflexively revert back to your authoritarian tendencies.

I think it’s okay that some people believe we should have high concentrations of power and authority (and wealth) in the hands of a few (or even just one wonderful “messiah” if that is the eventual hope). But stop pretending to love Democracy, Freedom, America and the (highly) successful principles upon which the latter were obviously founded.

We (progressives) are the lovers of freedom.
    We are the the patriots.
We are the defenders of the Constitution.
We love the flag and all it stands for.
You are free to surrender your mind to whatever religions, cults, demagogy or fascist ideologies you choose.

But please have a little integrity and stand behind your convictions. You might be surprised at how much more respect we’d all have for.
