‘Civil war this, civil war that’

Last week:

Gen. John Abizaid, the Commander of the U.S. Central Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Iraq may be on the brink of a civil war, noting that the violence in Baghdad was worse than at any point since he assumed command in July 2003…. Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said, “I believe we do have the possibility of that devolving to a civil war.”

Yesterday:

“The president is going to listen to his commanders on the ground,” Condoleezza Rice said, “and he’s going to respond to what they, what they say.”

This morning:

“You know, I hear people say, well, civil war this, civil war that,” Bush said. “The Iraqi people decided against civil war when they went to the ballot box. And a unity government is working to respond to the will of the people.”

Yes, the president really did say, “civil war this, civil war that,” as if it were a vaguely trivial matter that’s hardly worth considering.

As for the efficacy of the unity government, as Judd noted, “More than 100 Iraqi civilians are dying per day, mostly in sectarian violence, according to a recent U.N. report.” It sounds like just another concern for Bush to dismiss with his trademark cavalier attitude.

I guess the commanders on the ground mentioned civil war. Ooops.
As for political rhetoric, Civil war this, civil war that belongs in the Hall of Shame. Right next to:
A billion here. A billion there. Pretty soon you’re talking real money.
And Spiro Agnew’s classic:
If you’ve seen one slum, you’ve seen them all.

  • Remember to multiply any death count number in Iraq by 10 to get the equivalent number it would be in the good ol’ USA. That 100 civilian count a day would be 1000 of our citizens!

  • Yes, the president really did say, “civil war this, civil war that,” as if it were a vaguely trivial matter that’s hardly worth considering.

no different than the attitude expressed to the anonymous CIA briefer who called the preznit’s attention to ‘bin Laden determined to strike w/i US’ to which his snappy comeback was ‘All right, you’ve covered your ass now.’ (from Ron Suskind’s ‘The One Percent Doctrine.’)

  • I’m thinking of his recently disclosed quote to the pre-911 intelligence briefers: “Okay, you covered your ass.”

  • Remember in the first year of the war commanders on the ground told their officers NOT to refer to the violence going on as an Insurgency. Now they are playing the same game with the term Civil War.

The Bushite defense, that the Iraqis voted for a ‘unity’ government and thus do not want Civil War kind of mocks the very definitions here. Perhaps some American Civil War scholar tried to explain that Civil Wars only happen when a winning candidate doesn’t get on the ballot in some states, the war is fought over secession or non-secession, and open field battles between clearly defined armies take thousands of casualties in a day.

Somebody needs to explain to the Bushite Morons that most Civil Wars are fought by one group to take control of the whole country from another group (Spanish Civil War, Russian Civil War, English Civil War). I’m not sure if the Sunnis in Iraq are fighting a war of Secession or a War of Dominance. My suspicion is that the Sunnis want to win Dominance over Iraq (and the oil revenues) but will settle for a third of the country.

And someone should explain to Boy George II that in fact he does not have a better understanding of the English language than the rest of the country (or the world for that matter). If English ever became the official language of this country, Boy George II would be automatically disqualified to run for office.

  • Truly a national disgrace. A lying, ignorant sack of shit for a President. We should all be ashamed – those who voted for this buffoon, especially, but also we who did not, for not being able to get out more voters (of which there were plenty) who could have prevented us from ever having to suffer under him.

  • To echo Lance, and to pose a rhetorical question: so, the American populace, around 1860, decided against civil war when they went to the ballot box?

  • “Civil war this, civil war that” — this from the Regal Moron who, just before our military Crusade began, didn’t know the difference between (or even the words) “Sunni” and “Shiite”. God, this is a stupid country. That we, through our elected representatives, have allowed “The Decider” and the rest of the Bush Crime Family to remain this long in office is a disgrace to us all. We should be ashamed. We should be very ashamed.

  • What I find amazing is that it’s in doubt that there already is a civil war going on. Unrelenting and escalating sectarian violence at this level is a civil war. But of course, in this create-a-reality sadministration they will never admit it.

  • “civil war this, civil war that,”

Don’t you realize that Bush was just quoting Lincoln?

Some people say they’ve never seen Lincoln’s quote “civil war this, civil war that,” before. Well, I guess there’s a difference of opinion about what Lincoln said.

You won’t hear this from the drive-by media, and the lunatic left will never admit it, but it’s a well-known fact that Bush has a fondness for quoting Lincoln, as he did in saying “civil war this, civil war that,” about the Iraq war.

The rabid, spittle-flecked Bush haters in the Democratic Party have gone too far, criticizing Lincoln’s conduct during the civil war.

Why does the left hate America and love slavery?

On today’s Meet the Press, we examine the controversy regarding recent comments from leaders of the Democratic Party that some say are an endorsement of slavery. Here to provide in-depth analysis are Newt Gingrich, Pat Buchanan, and John Hinderaker of Powerlineblog.

  • As intelligent thought bubbles up, it’s always blocked by Bush’s glass floor. Anything above it don’t need no stink’n intelligence, as demonstrated by Bush. Gut feelings is what tells the tale, not gray matter, in what the Decider decides.

  • With a nod to Dr. Dre and Snoop dee-oh-double-gee:

It’s like this and like that and like that and uh
It’s like that and like this and like that and uh
It’s like this, and who gives a fuck about civilians?
So jus’ chill, as I do some brush clearin’ …

I guess Bush is just straight gangsta … or … something.

  • You know, constantly bringing up the reality on the ground in Iraq doesn’t help Bush’s vision of paving the way for Armageddon in Lebanon.

Sheesh, people, get your priorities straight.

  • Roflmao off @ the Bush quoting Lincoln post…

Actually our brave, well read, and deeply intellectual president was probably quoting Hegel.

    Where “this” is the antithesis…
    “That” is the thesis…

And… “civil war” is the synthesis.

[Aside: To any writers or producers reading this– How about a movie called “Being not there” in which Chance the gardener this time is a dark, mean spirted bore like Bush???]

  • I was unlucky enough to see part of Bush’s press conference today — if that’s what it was. These things seem more like seizures to me.

There he was, Dubya the Dunce, stammering and hyperventilating and frantically grasping for something to say. And as usual, he resorted to his comfortable mantra about how terrorists are bad and freedom is good, with a few proper nouns thrown in to show he was talking about the right topic.

I’m coming to embrace an Australian nugget of wisdom regarding politicians: “Don’t vote. It just encourages them.”

  • One wonders what our soldiers in the field, suffering through endless 125-degree days, will think when they hear their worthless Leader treating their situation like so much carpet lint?

  • Well folks, that’s it. Herr Bush has now decided to make his field commanders—and the JCS—irrelevant. That adds up to a de facto rejection of the entire Iraq command—right down to the grunts and jarheads fighting his little war for him, just as he’s done to the vast majority of the US population (remember—he has a special place in his heart for stabbing lapdogs in the back—just ask Brownie). Would he play the strawman game if there were a few hundred thousand radicals on the Mall, screaming for his head and burning him in effigy? Probably. Would he play that game if there was a brace of Howitzers perched on the heights at Arlington—zeroed in on the Oval Office? I’m certain that he’d have SnowFlake trying to spin him out of that predicament. Will he play that same game when there’s a Dem majority in both houses of Congress? In a word—yes—because the man has separated himself from any semblance of reality. He’ll run off to Crawford and clear brush until (a) the problem goes away, or (b) his cronies decide who to make the “stooge” for the screaming masses.

93 days until the midterms, and another 56 beyond that until the new Congress convenes. That’s…ummm…149 days, and counting….

  • He sounds just like his evil mother with her “beautiful mind”

Barbara Bush said of the war in Iraq: “Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? It’s not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?”

    Sociopaths.

    God help us.

  • Dear President Bush,

Keep reading books on President Lincoln. He had a Civil war after a national election. These things happen.

I must say that you are leaving an impressively large list of memorable comments. I keep hearing them repeated on late night TV. It’s certainly another aspect of your leadership just like your record number of days on vacation, the huge deficit, and the failed wars.

I know you’re concerned about your presidential legacy. Don’t worry, it will be a long time before we forget.

    Your boss,

    John Q. Public

  • To slightly paraphrase Bush, he just yada-yada’d civil war. ” A few thousand bombings, tens of thousands killed … yada yada .. civil war.” I have a great idea for a new sitcom, it’s about a president who’s about nothing.

  • this thing .. fuhrer bush .. is nothing more than a shitstain in the back of evil’s panties .. nothing more than a hemmroid whose biggest fear is preparation h ……..
