When I worked at Americans United for Separation of Church and State for seven years, I read a lot of direct mail from bizarre religious-right groups. It was the ’90s, so most of it had a straightforward pitch: Bill Clinton will turn you into an atheist unless you send (fill in the blank) all of your money right now.
Now, Hillary Clinton is running strong, and as Ben Smith noticed, right-wing direct mail is compensating. This was a letter from Robert Grant, founder of the Unification Church-linked Americans for Faith and Freedom:
Dear Fellow Christian,
Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton have never made it a secret. They hate you. I know that because the Clintons hate me, too. Because you and I stood up to Bill Clinton. And now he wants revenge. […]One-by-one, Bill and Hillary Clinton have taken revenge against the brave Congressmen who managed to impeach him. […]
Just as God’s grace helped David with his battle with Goliath, you and I have won battles with Bill Clinton before. […]
[I]f the Clintons and the ACLU get their way, one day it will be illegal to wear a cross around your neck… And it could be illegal to even say a private prayer unless you close your drapes first…. The radical ACLU has already succeeded in making The 10 Commandments illegal in Alabama. […]
Please don’t put this letter aside for even a day or two. Please sign your United Christian Voice Petition and return it to me today. And please include your emergency donation of at least $14…. If you and I don’t fight back, he’ll destroy us.
Remember, some people will see this and write a check.
