CNN’s Beck thinks John Birch Society is making ‘more and more sense’

Considering CNN’s Glenn Beck’s record of lunacy, I more or less assumed he was no longer able to surprise me. I stand corrected.

Cable news viewers can be forgiven if, like us, they happened to turn on Glenn Beck’s show on CNN Headline News Wednesday night and were surprised to see a spokesman for the John Birch Society being treated like an expert source.

It is, let’s face it, pretty shocking to see a group that has been a pariah since the 1960’s given credence on a mainstream television network, especially when the group is as far out as the JBS. The JBS is, after all, the group that believed fluoridated drinking water was a Communist mind-control plot. Oh, and its founder, Robert Welch, once accused Dwight Eisenhower — and no, we are not kidding — of being “a dedicated conscious agent of the communist conspiracy.” It even inspired Bob Dylan to write a satirical song, “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues.”

Beck himself referred to the group’s reputation, introducing his guest, JBS spokesman Sam Antonio, by saying, “Sam, I have to tell you, when I was growing up, the John Birch Society, I thought they were a bunch of nuts.” But Beck’s views on that score seem to have changed — “You guys are starting to make more and more sense to me,” Beck told Antonio.

He wasn’t kidding. Glenn Beck seriously wanted his CNN viewers to know that he believes the John Birch Society is “starting to make more and more sense.”

My friend Ron Chusid notes that the modern conservative movement seems to have shifted so far to the radical right, that all of a sudden, the JBS isn’t necessarily considered fringe in GOP circles. Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul was asked about his association with the group, and said in mock horror, “Oh, my goodness, the John Birch Society! Is that bad? I have a lot of friends in the John Birch Society. They’re generally well educated, and they understand the Constitution.”

But Beck’s interview with a JBS spokesperson was even more striking, in large part because the right is convinced that CNN is somehow unfair to conservatives. Giving a nut like Beck his own show, despite humiliating ratings, where he can feature the John Birch Society as a legitimate, sensible group, should be enough to make everyone ask, “What liberal media?”

ThinkProgress has a clip of Beck’s segment, and in case anyone thinks Beck is being taken out of context, I’m including a full, unedited transcript below.

BECK: I want to turn now to Sam Antonio. He’s a national spokesperson on immigration for the John Birch Society.

Sam, I have to tell you, when I was growing up, the John Birch Society, I thought they were a bunch of nuts, however, you guys are starting to make more and more sense to me. There is something dirty in this — in this whole thing. I happen to believe it’s connected to the SPP. Can you float some of the theories here by the American — by the American public?

SAM ANTONIO, NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON, JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY: Well, first and foremost, Glenn, it’s great to be on your program. And yes, we at the John Birch Society are not nuts. We are just exposing the truth that’s been out there for many, many years.

Now this news that just came from Congressman Rohrabacher has been very shocking, but at the same time is not shocking. And as you just mentioned in your segue, it is part of the bigger picture of the Security and Prosperity Partnership that was signed by the Bush administration in 2005.

What this all means to me, just taking in all this information, leads to me again, that it’s the breakdown of our law enforcement, the breakdown of our men and women at the border, to prepare our country for an opening of our borders for Canada and Mexico and eventually all throughout the Americas.

BECK: OK. The SPP — in case somebody doesn’t know, you should go and look at this at SPP.gov. It’s a government web site and it’s — you have to read between the lines. And a lot of people say that you’re a conspiracy freak if you believe any of this stuff.

But if you really think about it is the one answer that makes sense, that we want to share trade. We want to share workers. We want to have an open border. We want to have one border around Canada, Mexico and the United States. And we share everything including information.

You contend that the information that we’re sharing has — has allowed the Mexican government to get a hold on our enforcement of laws here in America. What do you mean by that?

ANTONIO: That is correct. Again, your viewers, if they go to the web site, SPP.gov, it talks about exchanges of information between our governments.

Now in this case with Ramos and Compean, it was the Mexican government that really drove this agenda to get these innocent Border Patrol agents convicted and sent to jail for these terms.

Now, since this exchange of information, under the Department of Homeland Security, we’re going to see more and more and more of this. And what this is going to lead to, Glenn, is really a demoralization of our men and women on the Border Patrol. And it’s happening now.

BECK: Right.

ANTONIO: I live here in San Diego, Glenn. I’m 15 minutes away from the border. I’ve spoken with Border Patrol agents, you know, active and retired, and I’m telling you, this case has really demoralized them.

BECK: I have to tell you, Sam, that you know, whether you want to believe in the black helicopters or not, America, you should look into this. And this is the warning to the Bush administration, by not releasing the documents. And this is the stuff they’re holding back.

Well, the people want to know what was the communication between our government and the Mexican government? Give us those records. They will not release them. And by not releasing them, they further these conspiracy theories of black helicopters and all kinds of things.

Sam, thank you very much.

You know I have been very disturbed this week by a lot of what I am seeing in the media. The fact the a moron like Beck would have the spokesman for the JBS on to talk about immigration isn’t all that surprising. I gave up on CNN a while ago.

More disturbing I have endured Karl Rove, Laura Bush, and some whack-job Chicago School economist on Public Radio over the past few weeks. Not interviews but speaches from the Aspen Ideas Festival. Why in the name of all that is good does anyone still pay attention to these impotent idiots?

As far and the black helocopter society goes, WTF? What exactly is the point of this interview? Are Beck and his pocket puppet from JBS suggesting the racist Republicanists are going to leave the Republicanist Party and start shooting Mexicans? Between Beck and Lou Dobbs CNN is quickly becoming quite a news source.

  • Beck’s infotainment on CNN is not much information but lots of cage-rattle entertainment. Perhaps, CNN should call itself CCE.

  • I don’t usually make fun of someone’s name, but the JBS spokesman is Sam Antonio?

In honor of the supposedly dissolute values of the Democratic Speaker of the House, I’m going to change my name to Sam Francisco.

  • Ah, brings back fond memories. My dad was an avid Bircher back in the ’60s. I grew up in a house full of right-wing paranoia and conspiracy theories. It’s the reason I have so little patience with that kind of nonsense from the right or the left as an adult. I guess a little good can come of just about anything (albeit sometimes a very little).

  • There’s no “liberal media” on TV except on public and government access channels. There’s no “liberal media” on the radio except Air America, where it’s available.

Liberal media has to be read in print and in the blogosphere. Literacy is the key to good ideas.

  • Glenn,

You might want to investigate Kix Cereal Boxes as well. They apparently have a brightly colored map that is going to be used by the UN to control the US by lumping various states together into regional commands. I hear it’s really scary.

Also, I hear that tin foil hats work grate at keaping Mikrowave Radiashun out of ur brayne.

Watch the skiies, cause anal probes are not phun.

Finally, the JBS (two out of three letters fits) has as their motto:
“Less Government, More Responsibility, and — With God’s Help — a Better World.” Well, one out of three ain’t bad.

  • At one of my jobs, I started talking to one of the twenty-eight percenters one day. He reacted in a slightly hysterical way when I simply wanted to have a little back and forth about politics. One of the things he told me was that I’m so brainwashed, I can’t even see how brainwashed I am. That, he claims, is how much of a hold the liberal media has on me.

I try to be reasonable about a lot of things. I don’t care if people disagree with me about everything, so long as they act as respectfully towards me as I would to them. But it’s pretty pointless, I’m beginning to think, to try to argue with someone like that. How could you possibly get through?

  • Glenn Beck has to have the John Birch Society on CNN to counter-balance DailyKos, which is as bad as the Nazis and KKK. Or so I hear.

  • I never thought I could dislike anyone more than I dislike Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity, but for some time now Glenn Beck has been giving that dynamic duo a real run for their money. It really is shameful. At one time CNN was at least semi-reputable.

  • As far as the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, I don’t trust a damn thing that King George has his hooks into –call me paranoid. I am opposed to the North American Union, the Amero, and the microchipped REAL ID, but then I still believe in American Sovereignty.

As far as Glenn “I’m a Loser Baby” Beck, the John Birch Society, and communist conspiracy theories, I could care less (looks mostly like Beck is reaching for ratings). The terrorism threat has been substituted for the communism threat. Let them have their fun. Like so often, the Corporate Military-Industrial Media serves primarily to muddle issues such as SPP, not serve the public interest through independent journalism.

And if you want to talk about “conspiracy theories” let’s talk about the $15M 9/11 Commission. Mike Vick was paid more in salary in 2005 ($23M) than was spent on the 9/11 Commission. It’s easy to see where the priorities of the Loyal Bushie Brownshi(r)t Cabal really are. But somehow, only “conspiracy nuts” such as myself (whom would also consider himself to be a democratic socialist) want to talk about it.

  • Dylan’s wasn’t the only song about the JBS. Here are the lyrics to the Chad Mitchell Trio’s version.

    The John Birch Society

Oh we’re meeting at the courthouse at eight o’clock tonight
You just come in the door and take the first turn to the right
Be careful when you get there, we’d hate to be bereft
But we’re taking down the names of everybody turning left

‘Cause we’re the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save this country from a communistic plot
We’re the John Birch Society, help us swell the ranks
To get this movement started, we need lots of tools and cranks

Now there’s no one that’s certain that the Kremlin doesn’t touch
We think that Westbrook Pegler doth protest a bit too much
We only hail the hero from whom we got our name
We’re not sure what he did, but he’s our hero all the same

Join the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Socialism is the ism dismalist of all
Join the John Birch Society, there’s so much to do
Have you heard they’re serving vodka at the W.C.T.U.

Well you’ve heard about the agents that we’ve already named
Well M.C.A. has agents that are flatly unashamed
We’re after Rosie Clooney, we’ve gotten Pinky Lee
And the day we get Red Skelton won’t that be a victory

For we’re the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Norman Vincent Peale may think he’s kidding us along
But the John Birch Society knows he spilled the beans
He keeps on preaching brotherhood, but we know what he means

We’ll teach you how to spot ’em in the city or the sticks
‘Cause even Jasper Junction is just full of Bolsheviks
The CIA’s subversive and so’s the FCC
There’s no one left but thee and we, and we’re not sure of thee

Oh we’re the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save our country from a Communistic plot
Join the John Birch Society, holding off the Reds
We’ll use our hands and hearts, and if we must, we’ll use our heads

BRIDGE: (O beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain)

spoken: Friends, do you want Justice Warren to be your Commissar?

Do you want Mrs. Khrushchev in there with the DAR?

You cannot trust your neighbors, or even next-of-kin

If mommy is a Commie then you gotta turn her in

To the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Fighting for the right to fight the right fight for the right
Join the John Birch Society, as we’re marching on
We’ll all be glad to see you when we’re meeting in the John
In the John, In the John Birch Society

  • I’m going to change my name to Sam Francisco

Interestingly, that is Mandy Patinkin’s characters name in Alien Nation. Perhaps “Sam Antonio” is actually an Alien from a distant planet himself….just like Glenn Beck.

  • Former Dan,

A word to the wise: If word gets around that you’ve been telling people the awful truth about Kix cereal boxes, the next thumping sound you hear on your roof at night could be black helicopters landing.

  • Pretty weak stuff.

Beck wanting to strengthen the border patrol and maybe build the IMPREGNABLE fence… He’s not that far out of the mainstream, sadly.

The Eisenhower thing is 40+ years old. Has JBS not done anything nutty since? Not that I’m defending them… I just find it weak if we have nothing more recent. When the GOP screams about Jane Fonda, I shake my head in pity at their living in the distant past. To be fair, let’s offer more than the Eisenhower gaffe, yes?

As for Beck, I haven’t seen/heard him in years. When he was on the radio, his program was far more thoughtful and balanced than Rush or Hannity who quail at the idea of offering any legitimate chance for a liberal argument to water down right wing talking points. Beck allowed intelligent liberals to get air time and he responded with counter-arguments that may not have been as strong, but they weren’t transparently preposterous like the BS Rush and Sean spout.

Perhaps he’s gone badly downhill since, but considering his tiny amount of influence and his relatively benign presence on right wing radio, denigrating Beck may not be time well spent.

  • The scary thing is that this isn’t limited to Glenn Beck and Ron Paul. Following my post on this at Liberal Values, I’ve received several comments defending them, and accusing me of name calling for saying it is something bad for them to be connected to the Birchers.

This certainly is a sign of how extremist the right wing has become.

  • This just in: on the next installment of Beck, he will embrace the doctrines of one Lyndon La Rouche. -Kevo

  • OK.

Now how can any serious cable new network put Beck’s nonsense on national television????

Can’t they find ANYONE who can talk conservative values in a much more civilized and meaningful light? If so, where are they? Put them on the show!!! Just get rid of Beck! He’s dumbing down the national average IQ and its reflecting on how ordinary Americans view politics and current events!

  • “Can’t they find ANYONE who can talk conservative values in a much more civilized and meaningful light?”

My fear is that this is what conservativism has degenerated to and Beck is accurately representing their views.

Of course that still leaves the question of why a news network devotes a show to presenting conservative views in the first place.

  • “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” –Gandhi

Let’s go back to ignoring idiots like Glenn Beck. Coverage on “left-wing blogs” is exactly what these morons want.

  • Can’t they find ANYONE who can talk conservative values in a much more civilized and meaningful light?

No, because those people don’t exist.

This has been another edition of simple answers to simple questions.

    😉

Seriously, though, Ron’s point is valid — the right has shifted sooooo far right that what was once considered absurd is now seen as more to the center.

And that’s actually part of the right’s plan—I can’t remember where I read that, but a former right-wing think tank member noted that they’d throw totally extreme stuff out there in order to shift the debate. Once people saw the super-crazy idea, the still crazy idea they really wanted suddenly didn’t seem all that radical.

It’s actually a brilliant strategical move. Too bad it’s effects have damaged the country to a point that it’ll take decades to fix.

  • “To be fair, the Birchers have apparently been critical of Bush over torture”

Good to hear that, but it raises the question of whether the Republicans have actually moved to the right of the Birchers.

  • “Seriously, though, Ron’s point is valid — the right has shifted sooooo far right that what was once considered absurd is now seen as more to the center.”

That’s it exactly. Anybody waking up from a 10 year coma today would be shocked at the change. Remember when “libera” used to be a legitimate political viewpoint. Now in the media it’s being used as a synonym for bomb-throwing radical. As inept as this administration is, they have been successful at working a complete change in the political environment.

  • “As inept as this administration is, they have been successful at working a complete change in the political environment.”

It isn’t only this administration (which may explain why they were successful at this considering how inept they are). The right wing noise machine has been working at this for years. They didn’t start out the smoothist–such with Spiro Agnew’s rants against radical liberals, but they got more sophisticated in their distortions over time.

The conventional wisdom is that Bush Jr. is so much worse than his father. While often true, Bush Sr. did more than his share of liberal bashing for a supposed moderate. He was the one who bashed card carrying members of the ACLU and campaigned in flag factories to show how patriotic he was (in contrast to those unpatriotic Democrats).

I also like the discussion here (with comments like “Ron’s point is valid) much better than the discussion at Liberal Values. Over at my own blog I’m in the minority as a combination of right wingers and Paul supporters (am I being redundant?) are protesting that I’m engaging in name calling when I call right wing nut groups “right wing nut groups.”

  • In the 90’s the JBS sold a poster that had pictures of Hilter, Stalin and other murderous dictators alongside a picture of then-president Bill Clinton. This poster contained the sentence “The experts agree; gun control really works.” If, according to the Bill O’Liellys and Michelle Malkins of the world, it isn’t okay for the Democratic presidential candidates to associate with the DailyKos folks, I don’t know why it should be okay for a Republican presidential candidate (Ron Paul) to associate with the type of people who would sell such a poster.

  • ““First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” –Gandhi

Let’s go back to ignoring idiots like Glenn Beck. Coverage on “left-wing blogs” is exactly what these morons want.”
    To Schnooky:
Not really sure ignoring them is the best way to go, but since we have already moved past laughing and are currently at fighting them… maybe we need to find a way to make sure they don’t win while we aren’t looking.

On the larger subject, watching CNN I sometimes feel like I live under occupation. First, you listen to the “official” news and its lies and nonsense. Then, to find out whats really happening you turn on the BBC. Just like in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Hmmm… Maybe these Birch conspiracy nuts aren’t so far off after all.

  • When Glen Beck had John Edward (who talks to the dead) on for and hour of brown nosing, was when II realized that CNN was not in the news business.

  • Yes, the US has moved about five points to the right since Bush I stole the Presidency in 1980. The last two points to the right have happened in just the last 6 years.

When I was a kid NASCAR and ‘pro-wrestling’ and born-again ‘christians’ were all jokes. We laughed at them. JBS was such a crazy bunch of idiots, everyone laughed at them.

But now the South has won the civil war and they have taken over the country.

I’ve been reading ‘IBM and the Holocaust’, a book by Edwin Black about how IBM’s pre-computer punch-card technology was the key to the Nazi wat machine’s ability to organize resources.

But the most amazing thing is to read the quotes by actual high-level Nazis. It is the SAME rhetoric on the Main Stream Media!!! Exactly, and almost word-for-word. Michael ‘Savage’ Wiener, Michele Malkin, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh are repeating Nazi-era propaganda almost verbatim. Just replace ‘Jew’ or ‘Communist’ or’ Union Member’ in the Nazi propaganda with ‘Gay’ or ‘Mexican’ or ‘Union Member’ and it IS the same!

By the poll numbers, about 30% of US Citizens would now agree that Hitler Was Right. The other 70% continually needs accurate and unbiased reporting to mantain a lid on the autoritarian lovers of fascism.

And one last thing about the term ‘Liberal’. A Republican form of government is, by definition, Liberal. When right-wingers potificate about Liberals being bad, they are saying that the US Consitution is bad. They are espousing a return to monarchal dictatorships and ending the Rule of Law. Their continued support of the Bush II administration is proof enough that they hate the Rule of Law and the US Constitution upon which it is based.

  • I don’t buy the flouride is a communist plot bit, but flouride is a toxic chemical waste that should not be put in water. Research has shown that ingestion of flouride does nothing to reduce dental decay, it only works topically. This, along with the belief that people should not be medicated by their government without their consent, is why all of Europe except Britain has long ago dropped water flouridation. Here in Denmark, the rate of tooth deacy among children is a small fraction of that in the US. Of course, the free dental clinics in all schools, public and private, with regularly scheduled cleanings helps too.

And yes, the Nazis and Soviets flouridated the water in the concentration camps and gulags. Various compunds have a pacifying effect. Look at many antidpression drugs and you will find that they are flouride based.

It’s a shame that due to the nuttiness of the birchers, we have yet to have an honest and open discussion of water flouridation in the US.

Taking highly toxic industrial waste from the production of aluminum (also toxic) and selling as a product with health benefits to be put in everyone’s water is one the biggest scams of the 20th century.

  • Harry Bradley, of the Four Sisters Bradley Foundation, was a member of the John Birch Society and main contributor. Some might be familiar with other groups the Bradley Foundation has funded, like the Federalist Society, AEI, Heritage and the PNAC.

Yep, the Birchers weren’t quite crazy enough for old Harry. He moved on to organizations that were even bolder about indoctrinating the world in Christ and Capitalism.

And btw Ron, I remember when you used to say I was being hyperbolic and slanderous connecting these nutballs to the supposedly reasonable Republicans that exist, well, somewhere in somebody’s imagination. I don’t know when you will finally grasp that this is what they are.

  • If I understand the thrust of this blog commentary correctly, if even ONE TV interviewer asks a representative of the John Birch Society to present the viewpoint of the organization on contemporary issues, then that is totally irresponsible and unacceptable.

So much for this blogger’s commitment to free speech.

Incidentally, while there are many legitimate reasons to dispute and criticize the JBS — it is, nevertheless, also true that the JBS has been more accurate in some of its analyses than has been the case from mainstream media and so-called “experts” within our political and academic establishment.

Also, the Bush Administration is despised by the JBS. In fact, the JBS does not even consider people like Bush 41 or Bush 43 as legitimate conservatives. They also object to such other noteworthy people as: Newt Gingrich, Bill Buckley (and the National Review crowd), Ronald Reagan, and most of the current and past GOP leadership in Congress.

The JBS begins with a different baseline for what constitutes GENUINE conservative and constitutional principles and values.

One can certainly argue with their premises, but one thing is certain. If a JBS member or sympathizer was President, we never would have gone to war in Iraq. In addition, many government programs and much current spending which everybody recognizes as absurd, wasteful, and arising from entrenched bi-partisan political corruption (such as the earmarks scandal) would never have taken place in a presidency which adopted JBS principles.

Yeah! And bridges and vital infrastructure would be collapsing and killing people all over the country on a weekly basis! But there wouldn’t be no flouride in the water and Bernie Sanders would be in jail!

    Exactly ernie!

I didn’t know much about JBS other than william Norman Grigg’s columns for Lew Rockwell and Ron Paul. And please don’t tell me that “mainstream” conservatives like those who spin propaganda for the AEI or Commentary are any better.

Frankly I wish we could hear more from the noninterventionist, small government, libertarian conservatives, instead of the warmongering, bigspending “conservatives” that hold the reigns of power in this country.

  • I actually enjoy reading the JBS’s publication called the New American Magazine. I consider John Birch Society more Constitutionalists. They exposed many of the things we are now realizing today such as our loss of liberties and freedoms and a North American Union. I think there is too much attacking of the messenger and not enough research of the message. Unless you think the Constitution is a bad thing?

  • Sinking dollar, tremendous trade deficits, $9 trillion in debt, Chinese control of the Panama Canal, Revisionist history, Militant homosexual lobby in our public schools, Transfer of Nuclear technology to China, Chinese and Russian involvement in international drug cartels and development of the Iranian Nuclear program, Mainland China falling to the Communists, private ownership of The Federal reserve, and it goes on and on….. Maybe we should start listening to the birchers before it’s too late !!! There is no way our nation could get this screwed-up without some organized and deliberate attempt to destroy the USA !!! Look at the people making these decisions….Wake up America and smell the Daisies !!!

  • There are central issues that are ignored and or separted in the current political landscape on both sides of the aisle. Our government has become increasingly intrusive and dominant over the people. Our governments central function is safety and security of this nations people. Instead of the focus being just that, politicians have become slaves to big dollar contributions and their agendas. Politicans split the issues with legal minutia and divide us as a people. The NAU is a prime example. It is behind the scenes, private, and a conspiracy. The American people deserve to participate and make the decision on this and immigration enforcement. The current administration is not the peoples friend. Government is not for the people any more. It’s specialinterest and polluted by corruption. The JBS is as close to the original intent of the constitution as you will find. Wake up to the NAU, and you will find a huge trojan horse in the middle of our country that will divide us all for good……. STOP THE NAU…jbs.org

  • As for communist paranoia; the 30 million + people who died under Stalin’s regime did not die of paranoia but were shot or starved to death. The North American Union (NAU) is coming unless it is stopped. Just as the European Union once only existed in rumor and dare i say “conspiracy theory” its template will be used to create a similar superstate here in the americas. The NAFTA super highway is under construction (similar to the Trans European Corridor TEC). If you don’t believe it just go out to Texas and see where construction has already begun. Also ask the lawyers how busy they will be handling all those eminent domain cases as most of Texas is plowed up to build the TransTexasCorridor section of the NAFTA superhighway. If 20 years from now we are living under an NAU will you still think organizations such as the John Birch Society were just paranoid?

  • The John Birch Society is a patriotic organization which has been educating
the American people for 60 years. The North American Union plan, known as
the Security and Prosperity Partnership,is a reality. There is also a plan to
merge the North American Union with the European Union, the African political
union, and an Asian political union. The North American Union would be a
fascist country run by multi-national corporations. My question to progressives is: What do you stand to lose by researching the North American Union plan?
