Coulter blasts grieving 9/11 widows

I realize [tag]Ann Coulter[/tag] is more circus clown that political pundit, but I have to wonder what kind of person lashes out at [tag]9/11[/tag] [tag]widows[/tag].

Think Progress noted that in Coulter’s new book, “[tag]Godless[/tag],” [tag]Coulter[/tag] describes widows who lost loved ones in the attacks like this: “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzies. I have never seen people enjoying their husbands’ death so much.”

This morning, on the Today show, Matt Lauer asked Coulter to explain the description.

Lauer: [You criticize them] because they dare to speak out?

Coulter: To speak out using the fact they are widows. This is the left’s doctrine of infallibility. If they have a point to make about the 9-11 commission, about how to fight the war on terrorism, how about sending in somebody we are allowed to respond to. No. No. No. We have to respond to someone who had a family member die. Because then if we respond, oh you are questioning their authenticity.

Lauer: So grieve but grieve quietly?

Coulter: No, the story is an attack on the nation. That requires a foreign policy response. […]

Lauer: What I’m saying is I don’t think they have ever told you, you can’t respond.

Coulter: Look, you are getting testy with me.

Lauer: No. I think it’s a dramatic statement: “These broads are millionaires stalked by stalked by griefparrazies? I have never seen people enjoying their husband’s deaths so much.”

Coulter: Yes, they are all over the news.

It’s just hard to fathom someone seriously making this argument, in public, on national television, but there it was. The mind reels.

The only wife I can think of that would enjoy the death of her hubby would be the fictional Peggy Bundy.

Oh, Ann, you twisted bitch. I would like to be there that one day when the gordion knot thought process in your brain unravels. Better than front row seats at Jerry Springer. I’ll bring the beer.

  • Is it sweeps week or something? Why did “Today” think it would be a good idea to give the Coulter a national forum? What’s next, Fred Phelps on Larry King? No, wait, Larry just finished an hour with Mary Kay LeTourneau and Villi Falaau. Which way to the Egress?

  • Now if only the 9/11 widows would hook up with the Gold Star moms and condemn the madness in Iraq and the erosion of civil liberties which was all done in their name.

  • gone unmentioned is the fact that someone on the today show demonstrated a capacity for follow up. it’s not quite journalism, more tea party distaste, but at least it’s not the typical “if you don’t agree with something someone says, just ignore it and say nothing” which passes for network journalism today. i guess we’re already seeing the effects of couric leaving.

  • “Coulter: Look, you are getting testy with me.”

This is Coulter’s typical response to anyone questioning her insane statements. When college students expressed their disapproval with something she said at an on-campus speaking event, she shouted at them, “I will not be lectured to!”

By all objective measures, she should be sued for every penny she owns and then some. It’s the only thing she really cares about, her fabulously overstuffed pocket book. I’d love to see her try to defend herself in a courtroom filled with hostile 9/11 widows.

  • Triggered by this topic, grossed out by Ann Coulter, and in honor of 666 Day: Please, please … bring on the Rapture and take all these people away. I think it would be wonderful to be “left behind” in a world full of godless, nature-loving Democrats.

  • Let’s go back to the Civil War. Grieving widows were in the news then—were they not?

World War One. Unless I’m mistaken, the same thing happened.

World War Two. I remember the stories at the family reunions about how people felt and acted after Pearl Harbor. Yep—same thing there. kept going on, all through the war.

Korea. Viet Nam. The Beirut bombings. Iraq 1. Afghanistan. Iraq 2. Grieving widows is a natural part of of war. The only difference is that, in the case of 9/11, those who are grieving are not the widows of those killed in battle. They are the widows of firefighters. Office-workers. Low-to-mid-ranking personnel at the Pentagon. Flight-crew and cabin-crew for commercial airliners. Passengers. Police officers. Janitors. Window washers. Receptionists. Typists. Maintenance staff.

Maybe we could send Ann Coulter to Iraq…and then, just leave her there. Right out in the open. Out on the street. Next to an angry mob….

  • And again (I think I am getting tired of saying this) the media continue to provide a place at the microphone for these obvious hateful morons. Who’s fault is it, Coulter’s or NBC? Primarily the latter methinks.

  • I scrunched down my nausea and actually watched this, and it was worthwhile. Coulter is such a twisted, vicious, sick-minded little harridan that it’s easy to forget that she’s also just not very smart.

Boiled down, the argument she seemed to be trying to make to Lauer was that the 9/11 widows should not be considered as legitimate spokespeople for a position because their emotional presence overshadows the merits of what they’re saying.

Think about this: the most hysterical, overwrought, irrational voice out there suggests that it’s somehow dirty pool to push back against grieving widows. As if Republican Jihad hasn’t been making these emotional, irrational appeals for nigh on 30 years, on every issue from Willie Horton to “partial-birth” abortion.

All that, and Kristin Breitweiser could kick her/his bony ass six ways to Sunday.

  • Allow me to second Ed and Steve’s motions.

    1) Let the Rapture sweep the riffraff away. Then we can get their cars.

    2) Embed Coulter in some really slimey part of Irag. Just above the nasal passages should be enough. 😉

  • The woman is such a sick bitch that I don’t know why she has a forum at all. There has to be a special place in hell for such a miserable person. Whenever she is on TV that is a signal for me to turn it off. If everone would do that, she would go away. I hope she has a terrible life for saying such a thing about widows of war. If there is any justice in the universe she will get hers.

  • And again (I think I am getting tired of saying this) the media continue to provide a place at the microphone for these obvious hateful morons. Who’s fault is it, Coulter’s or NBC? Primarily the latter methinks.

    bubba

But didn’t she make a fool of herself? Does anyone think she helped her career with this appearance? GOOD FOR MATT LAUER for calling her out on some rhetoric she thought only die hard fans would read (I mean, how much did NBC have to pay someone to read all that tripe?).

  • What is Coulter’s authenticity that cannot be tested? Is she the only blond female conservative in America with half her brain tied behind her back to make it a fair fight for liberals? Cheney’s wife already took that position. And, really, I watch a fair amount of news and I cannot remember the last time I saw a 9/11 widow. So as far as them being “all over it”, maybe they are over all of it instead. Where is Al Franken when we need him to challenge this skinny assed bitch’s take on reality?

  • lou, I think her “authenticity” for being blond and female should be tested.

eadie, we here and others think she made a fool of herself. But so many others watching the show probably (likely) don’t pick that up. And Lauer’s calling her out should have been much stronger–like “have you no sense of decency, no sense of shame that you would say such crass things about people who lost their spouses, whose families have been torn apart by this event? You are saying that just because they were compensated for their substantial losses they can’t speak out, that they do not have a voice? What objective and documented evidence do you have that shows they are enjoying their husbands’ deaths? Oh, and by the way, where exactly do you live, for voter registration purposes?”

  • Guys (and ladies), this is great that the Today show is putting Coulter on TV. Its like exposing a festering sore to the open air. If she had said the same things at some conservative get together she would have received a standing ovation. But how do you think a general audience will react to these outrageous comments? They will be outraged of course.

Let’s have the Today show put Phelps on too. I’d like to see Frist’s reaction when he hears that he has Fred Phelps’ endorsement.

I say trot out the whole conservative freak show.

  • Why give this bitch the air time? On the other hand, more people got to see what a sick looney she is.

If someone else can organize a collection for air fare to Bahgdad, I’ll pay her bus fare…

  • “…Coulter is…just not very smart.
    Boiled down, the argument…”

    STOP!

The imagery there is too tempting, but disposal of the rendered scum would make uranium disposal look like a walk in the park.

  • Ed,
When the Rapture does come, and when the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells of the Earth find themselves NOT with those to be saved, the collective “oh, shit” from them will be a hoot.

I’m with NeilS, the more the whackjobs on the right get airtime, the more insane they look. That’s what brought down Coulter’s hero Joe McCarthy, during the 1954 Army hearings.

  • I didn’t see her appearance on TV this morning but if I’m reading this correctly Coulter is automatically equating all of the widows– all 2,000-plus of them –with “the left.” You know, I believe there were some Republicans working at the World Trade Center that day, maybe even some Bush voters.

    Too bad Ann wasn’t there.

  • Bubba and 2Manchu make me imagine what Edward R. Murrow would have done with Ann Coulter. He would have destroyed her or ignored her.

I think she got her start on TV with Geraldo Rivera during the OJ trial.

  • It seems Ann [Sicko] Coulter is saying she doesn’t want to face a 9/11 widow when she argues with liberals about the correct response to 9/11. And we see why. She wants to slam them as being treasonous for disagreeing with her.

So apparantly, her point is, don’t put someone up against me I can’t libel or slander rather than argue with.

Hey Ed, nice to see you get on board on calling for the Rapture.

  • Lance gave me an idea…

Place Coulter in a room with 9/11 widows and widowers, and their children. No press, no cameras…just her and the families. Let them have a private discussion with her.

  • Coulter is one of the most articulate conservative voices in the media today. It’s always a pleasure to see her quick responses to liberal media questions.

What we should be upset about is Lauer’s inability to do an interview with a conservative without starting off with Democratic talking points.

  • I’m sure the witch (with the cross around her neck) would have a different opinion if a 9/11 widow wanted to “invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity”.

Or maybe if they advocated murdering a president, an office building full of people, or maybe an entire country.

    http://mediamatters.org/items/200604200006

In that case it would be entirely appropriate.

  • Coulter is one of the most articulate conservative voices in the media today

why does the articulateness of conservative voices seem to be limited to personal attack and smear? Why can’t an articulate conservative voice make the conservative case based upon ideas and not on smear? When was the last time an articulate conservative voice actually took the high road? The fact that you defend her baffles me – how do people like you actually look at yourselves in the mirror in the morning?

  • Articulate? Take a look back at some of her responses. She looked absolutely perplexed and dumbfounded most of the time during that interview, then resorted to some wacko “doctrine of infallibility” mantra. The women is clearly not smart, clearly has no sense of decency (or style for that matter) and needs to be exposed for what she is. As much as I hate to see her on TV, perhaps JL did a good thing. His audience didnt seem to take too kindly to his exposing her toxic thoughts. But sunlight is the best antitode to this venom. If more people can be exposed to the true Godless one (her) then perhaps someone will end up putting a pie in her face one day. JL did a better job than most interviewers on this one – at least he stood up to her a few times, but unfortunately he missed several opportunities to just body slam her. Dont know why he even bothered with the niceties, like “always a pleasure to have you here…blah blah”. Why not just say, wow, this is vile stuff. And then ask the audience how they feel, and get her a round of boos. It would have been easy…

  • I’m with those who say the media should not give this woman a platform. When Time Magazine put her hateful face (and endless pointy legs) on its cover, this is the letter I wrote them:

“Today, after subscribing to your magazine for over 25 years, I have
cancelled my subscription to Time. Featuring Ann Coulter as your cover
story was just the tipping point that has been coming on for the last
couple of years. Ann Coulter is a crazy harpy who advocates violence
and who makes outrageous, clownish statements that defy logic, much
less scholarship or thoughtfulness about the issues of the day. She
should be ignored, forced to get a real job, not spotlighted. But Time
has missed the boat on so much more than its tepid pandering to the
right would suggest. Relegating important issues to a blurb on the
notebook page, Time has become irrelevant as so much of the lazy press
who don’t bother to inform. The abdication of the press is why we find
ourselves in Iraq, why we are losing the separation between church and
state, why corporate interests rule through their self-serving, paid
politicians and why these same politicians can perpetrate the most
outrageous lies and hypocrisy and know they will get away with it. The
abdication of the press is why our country has lost so much stature
here and around the world. And so good-bye…before your special issue
    on Britney’s baby.

  • Huh? Did Ann Coulter say something? I must’ve missed it. My brain filters out her arrogant, ignorant, screaching and replaces it with easy listening. All I heard was Kenny G.

  • Nice one, Frak.

But as some others have noted here, I think it helps both progressives and the embattled moderates within the Republican Party whenever Coulter or any of the other hate-addled wackos gets exposure. The Time story was crap because they deigned to take her seriously, and filtered out the bile and garbled “thinking” that were both so clearly on display in the Today segment.

I wish the Democrats would tie Coulter and the rest of the right-wing psychos to Republican officeholders and candidates the same way they’re endlessly blathering on about the considerably less “out-there” Michael Moore, Sean Penn, etc.

  • “Coulter is one of the most articulate conservative voices in the media today ”

    No,no,no.
George Will is an articulate conservative voice
William F. Buckley is an articulated conservative voice.

Ann Coulter, like the idiots that dominate conservative talk radio, is a shill and a hack.

  • When is Ann Coulter going to admit she isn’t skinny because she’s anorexic, but because she’s screwed all those -deep-in-the-closet Republican gays who don’t believe in condoms?

How I’d love to see that Horse-faced Whore in my grand-uncle’s favorite position for “good” Republicans: six feet under, pushing up daisies.

  • Has anyone ever heard the phrase “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”? Unfortunately it’s never a good thing when Ann Coulter gets national air time, it probably just sells more of her books to those dumb enough to believe her rhetoric.

  • I do not think she is an”articulate conservative voice” either. I think she is stupid and mean. There may be an articulate conservative voice or two, such as George Will or William F Buckley, as was pointed out, but she has no business in such company. She has got to be an embarasment to any actual thinking person. I also don’t think she believes any of the crap she sells; she has no journalistic integrity; she’s just a whore. We shouldn’t even have to waste our time discussing her, and I don’t know why she gets her books published. That woman makes me sick, and I am not the only one. Perhaps she has undone herself with this most recent publication. Hope springs eternal

  • Will may be articulate, but he is hardly ever on the correct side of an issue.

  • If nothing else Ms Coulter’s comments prove that it is the CONSERVATIVE RIGHT THAT HATES AMERICA!!!

  • “Will may be articulate, but he is hardly ever on the correct side of an issue.” – bubba

True, but at least most of the time he doesn’t sound like he’d want to rip the entrails out of the person standing up to him. Not something you can say about Coulter.

  • The essence of Coulter’s remarks was that 9/11 widows are monopolizing victimhood, which is the tool the right needs to advance its political agenda. How dare they take such a plum political opportunity and use it under the guise of personal grief!

Her remark that Matt was getting testy with her shows how she and the rest of her righty friends need to always be the victim so that they can lash back at all the injustices perpetrated on them. Funny thing … Bush’s “ownership society” is all about saying that if something bad happens to you it’s your own damned fault. Ann: the way the world responds to you is your own damned fault.

  • When Ann awakens every morning the first thing she does is ask Jesus,”Who should I hate today”.

  • Coulter is one of the most articulate conservative voices in the media today

I would actually agree with this. But I don’t think it says an awful lot about how articulate conservatives are when a rabid skank like the CoutlerBeast is one of the better Reich wingers in terms of getting her point across. Maybe it’s just me…

  • Being articulate doesn’t imply intelligence anymore than being phlegmatic indicates obtuseness.

Coulter is a propagandist trying to imitate a polemicist. She knows that criticizing anyone that lost a relative during the attacks on 9/11 makes her look like a complete ass at a minimum. Therefore she demands someone who has been “unaffected” by the tragedy so that she may “respond” to their rightful criticisms of the government’s lack of foresight. She’s saying, “give me someone else I can accuse of being unpatriotic rather than the wife or mother or son or daughter or husband of someone who died that day.”

Her boilerplate ceased to be amusing long ago.

  • Every morning I pray: “Jesus, please help me to appreciate what Ann Coulter says” and the prayers do not work!

  • If Coulter were to actually read the Bible instead of accusing liberals of failing to pledge allegiance to it daily, she might stumble across several passages like the following:

“Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan. If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.”
    -Exodus 22:22

    Psalm 68:
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his
    holy dwelling.

    Isaiah:
Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend
the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.

The Gospel message is my favorite. From the Book of Luke:

1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
4″For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming!’ ”

6And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly.

Keep it up, 9/11 widows. May God grant you justice against your adversaries.

  • Alright, enough. I am sick and tired of hearing politicians, lobbyists, and political commentators being referred to as whores. These glib, shameful, and disgusting comparisons must stop. There is no reason to equate hardworking people with amoral, greedy filth. I think everyone who makes such comparisons owes a sincere apology to whores everywhere.

  • I just read on a website that Anne is a tranny. A guy who says knew her many years ago said she did drag shows .She has just taken millions of dollars from those hate books and she has homes in NY and Palm Beach so anyone who buys them is just helping this nut get richer.

  • “Coulter is one of the most articulate conservative voices in the media today.”;

    I can’t stop laughing.

  • the real ironic part is that she defines herself as a christian. with followers like that jesus must feel like climbing straight back on the cross.

  • The real outrage is folks like Breitweser and her Jersey cohorts who make hateful political comments then hide behind their widow status when they are criticized.

They are hypocrites. You can’t have it both ways!!!
